Wilco- H.O.R.D.E. Festival, CSDH, Dominguez Hills Ca 9/2/95 DAT Soundboard Master Black Crowes

For the last 25 years or so, I have been part of an online group of friends called Postcard from Hell (or Postcard for short). It started as a discussion board for Uncle Tupelo, but has become a network of a few hundred people who have now known each other forever. I am not too active on the list, more of a lurker, but I have met many people in person and made a lot of friends.

A few Postcarders went to Cancun for the Sky Blue Sky fest happening now. Postcarder Rob and his wife Crystal were in a very serious car accident down there- Rob is in ICU now. I can’t stop thinking about them and pulling for their well-being. Since they were there to see Wilco (and others), I thought I would start pulling some tapes from when I taped Wilco back in the mid-90s. Here they are at the Horde fest, with Black Crowes guesting on a couple of songs!
Please get better and come home soon, Rob and Crystal.

I don’t know if Rob is in any condition to listen to these, but I can do an all-Wilco week if it helps make the hospital stay better.

Shonen Knife- Lollapalooza, Cal State Dominguez Hills 9/5/94 xfer DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300

TLDR version: Forward to 3 minutes if you want to hear how it really sounds.

People were asking for more posts from this show, so I guess I’ll keep it rolling. After the Green Day set, we headed over to the 2nd stage for 2 bands- this was the first. I think I was more excited about the 2nd stage bands than the main stage ones- I was a huge Shonen Knife fan at this point and had never seen them.
As you can tell, the sound quality on the 2nd stage was different. Smaller area/smaller PA so the audio much clearer but not much low end. This one is muffled for the first 3 minutes or so since they started right when we got over there and my mic was buried under the flannel. After the set, I headed over to the TAANG! records tent and got my DAT case signed by the band. Cool 🙂

Stereolab- Lollapalooza, Cal State Dominguez Hills 9/5/94 xfer from DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300

On with the Lollapalooza 94 posts…
Here is another band that I was pumped to see at the show. This was the only time I ever saw Stereolab. It was good, but they seem best suited to be performing in the clubs with a light show to accompany the drone. They played in the middle of the afternoon here. Another “clear but thin” second stage recording.

The Breeders- Lollapalooza, Cal State Dominguez Hills 9/5/94 xfer DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300

Memory is a strange thing- I have a memory of watching the Green Day and 2nd stage sets pretty vividly and I remember being bored with Smashing Pumpkins, but I do not recall seeing the Breeders at all. I know that doesn’t sound like a nice endorsement of their set, but the performance is good and it sounds fine. Don’t know why I can’t recall a thing. It was my first ( and only) time seeing them and I was a casual fan. Hm. Cuts in during the set, so we must have just come from the 2nd stage or something.

Smashing Pumpkins- Lollapalooza, Cal State Dominguez Hills 9/5/94 DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300

OK, this is going to be short. I just got back from skiing and I got back in time to see Kepi/Kevin/Jonah’s Christmas show. It always fell on the 24th in the past so I could never see it due to family conflicts.
Anyway, this one would have been good for mediocre Monday. It’s incomplete (battery packs finally conked), it has a little diginoise, and it’s the Smashing Pumpkins. Sorry.

Beastie Boys- Lollapalooza, CSDH, Carson Ca. 9/5/94 xfer from DAT Audio Master w/Nakamichi CM300

I did not have time to remix this one, so it will sound a bit raw. Turn up the bass on your stereo a little, haha.
I took my step son to this show. He was 11 year old and weighed about 80lbs. When Green Day and Beastie Boys played, the crowd went apeshit and we were crushed/blocked in with a bunch of other people. We would pick our feet up and move 10-15ft at a time. It was both fun and terrifying. You will hear that the recording suffers a bit from the chaos & me yelling to my stepson(safety was a priority at that point) , but I like it anyway.
