Old 97s- Barleypalooza, Barley House, Dallas Tx 6/1/97 xfer from Hi8 Master w/Soundboard audio 97’s

Here’s another collection that I let fall off the radar- Neil Werries sent me his Hi8 masters to digitize a couple years ago. He did a lot of great stuff in the late 90s/early 2000’2 in the alt.country/americana genre. I sent his tapes back right away, but the last thing I posted was in 2023. Sorry Neil!
Why haven’t I posted this show yet? Well, he has a few shows that are multicamera but since both angles are filmed with analog equipment, it is not easy to time align the angles for edit. IF YOU ARE GOOD AT TIME STRETCH/ALIGNMENT AND YOU WANT TO HELP WITH THIS, please email me at shaynestacy@hotmail.com and I can let you know what’s up. Maybe someone will have some down time over the holidays and can help out.

OK, on to this one. I happened to have a DAT clone of the soundboard of this show (not from Neil) so I figured that I would synch it up with one of the angles. Turned out alright. I love this era of the 97s, so it was nice to get at least 1 angle out there in good quality. It’s a pretty special show since Jon Rauhouse joined the band on pedal steel for a good portion of the show, playing a bunch of stuff off Too Far to Care 2 weeks before the album was released. Dayum.
I might work to rebalance the audio in sections if someone signs up to align angles for edit- that pedal steel is WAY up in the mix.

The Gourds- Barleypalooza, Outside of Barley House, Dallas Tx. 6/1/97 Set 1 xfer from Hi8 Master

For the middle of this long weekend, here is a nice quality show from Neil Werries- this is the first of THREE sets that the Gourds did at this fest, so I figured I would post them separately. I think there might be soundboard audio of this show floating around out there somewhere- if any of you old DAT traders have it (Mike Shiner, Michael Pemberton, etc), let me know! I know there is a board of the 97s.. I have that one.

Slobberbone- Border’s Books, Dallas Tx 4/6/96 xfer from DAT Audience clone Acoustic In-store

Here’s a fun one for On This Date in History. Let’s keep the “Alt Country bands playing at retail establishments” theme going. First The Bottle Rockets at Best Buy, now Slobberbone at Border’s.
The recording was super dynamic, so I did another one of my janky volume boosts throughout different parts of the show. If you hear sudden volume drops, that’s my doing.
I got this from the taper, but I can’t recall who from Dallas was taping on DAT back then. Maybe lowdog (George Savage) or this guy named Riley who did a bunch of Old 97s stuff around this time.

Mazzy Star- Trees, Dallas Tx 3/9/94 Live Audience Recording xfer from DAT Master Clone

Here’s another show from that DAT that I got from David Patterson about 25 years ago. It looks like this one is also uncirculated. It’s a little bassy, but sounds pretty good!

Cramps- Dallas, Tx. 2/5/92 Unknown gen VHS xfer Live full show

Sorry about the quality on this one. I wouldn’t normally post something like this, but it was requested from someone (I won’t name them) and I had no time to pretty anything up today.
Here’s why he requested it:
“I was at that show and tripping hard on acid. I remember it as a fantastic show. I’d like to confirm that.”

Cause for Alarm- Rock Against Reagan, Republican National Convention, Dallas Tx 8/2x/84 Soundboard

It’s mediocre Monday! Everyone is asking tons of questions today, making this day truly meh.
Here is another interesting one from Barry Ward’s collection of tapes, and they appear to be somewhat uncirculated (not on youtube at least).
The first one from this tape is Cause for Alarm, playing Rock Against Reagan. It also contains the spoken word/MC’ing of Stoney Burke. Really cool stuff and only mediocre due to the lack of high end, distortion and hiss.

Reagan Youth- Rock Against Reagan, Republican National Convention, Dallas Tx 8/2x/84 SBD

Here is another one that I think is not widely circulated- I can’t find it on youtube and I never saw it on any trade lists back in the 80s/90s tape trading days. Any RY with Dave Insurgent is like gold, even if it is only 7min long.
