Biohazard-Aftershock Fest Discovery Park Sacramento 10/10/24 4K Full Set schoeps audio hardcore NYHC

Sorry to say that this was one of 2 big disappointments at Aftershock this year. I had to make a tough decision between Ministry and Biohazard and chose this one. We get to the stage about 3 minutes before they were scheduled to start- just in time!
A quick word for folks who may not be familiar with the logistics of these big festivals. Bands ALWAYS start at the scheduled times- there are city curfews in play and bands/promoters get huge fines if they go over at all. Every set throughout the day starts at the exact time listed. Slayer’s set started 3 minutes early to account for the intro video- that’s how exact it is.
So, when we saw people scrambling around with mics and sound at 4:25 (10 minutes after the scheduled start time), I knew this wasn’t gonna be great. The audio is terrible when the set starts, then gets better as it goes on.
26 minute set. When you start late at these fests, you don’t get to play your full set and end late. You get the hook. Bummer.

Ho99o9 (Horror)- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/24 4K Video w/ Schoeps Audio

Man, we lost Paul Di’Anno today. I knew he wasn’t in good health, but it’s still shocking to lose him so suddenly. I never got to see him perform, which is a huge bummer. Those first 2 maiden albums were life changing.
The video I have been trying to upload failed to process overnight, so I was going to restart the long process from scratch, thinking it was my issue.. and then another video bonked out. I think youtube might be having some issues.
So here is a different one from Aftershock. On my way back from the Biohazard stage in BFE, I came across Ho99o9 playing the soundwave or shockwave stage (WHY did they name them so similarly and then not label the stage? Cruel joke guys). Odd band- 2 rap vocalists and a drummer who do rap and metal/punk songs. I filmed a little less than half the set and had to get over to Till Lindemann.

Till Lindemann- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/24 Full 4K Schoeps Audio Rammstein

I have been trying to prep this show for a week- I can’t recall ever having so many issues in trying to get one of these ready. Finally done!

Here is the TL;DR version of notes: This show sounds amazing, I missed the first minute or so of video, so you get a still photo to accompany the audio track for that. Also, this is 18+ for obvious reasons if you watch it, so be sure that you are all age verified and logged in to watch this one!

Long version: What a show! I heard that this was one of Till’s first solo shows in the USA so I checked out some songs he was playing beforehand. Uh, er, wow. Songs about loving morbidly obese partners? check. Another about glden shwers? Holy crap, this dude is a walking fetish factory. So, imagine all of that in a multimedia spectacular, with extremely NSFW videos playing in the background.. and there you have it.
My good friend Tromster asked me- why did you choose to go see that? Well, none of the other bands at that time were too interesting to me, I enjoyed the song preview, and I figured I would be entertained.. and boy was I!
The first half of the video is not great. Lots of people were walking in front of me, making the focus go nuts… but after a bunch of people left (and a lot of people left- basically anyone with kids), I was able to move up into the spot where I filmed Slayer from. It’s good from there on out.
I need to reiterate- NSFW. Not safe for work. Not safe for kids. Not safe for prudes.

Descartes a Kant- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/10/24 4K Video master incomp

I went to Aftershock fest yesterday and had a blast! Hung out with my friend Matt, and saw a couple of friends(Scotty & Wayne) that I had not seen for a while.
Here’s a little teaser of what is coming up- it’s going to take some time to process and match up audio for the big bands, so here are 2 partial set posts today.
Right after I got in, I started wandering to the side stages since that’s where I usually live at these things early in the day, and I caught the very end of this band. I had listened to some of their stuff leading up to the fest and liked it alright. Kinda space rock sounding. Buuut… check it out at about the 1:20 mark… is she singing to a backing track? The mouth and the audio don’t match up. Odd.

Teen Mortgage- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/24 4K w/Schoeps Audio

Here’s where I screwed up (the first time) yesterday. After Descartes a Kant finished their set, I messaged my friend Matt and made arrangements to meet at the Coors Light stage so we could watch Gel’s set, which is where it (and I) was. Right? RIGHT?!?
No, both were wrong- both the stage I was at, and Gel’s set time. They had initially had Gel playing at 2:55 at the Coors Light stage, but they were moved at 4:15 which conflicted with Biohazard… but that’s not the worst part. I was at the wrong damned stage. Aftershock needs to clearly label these stages for the old folks like me.
So anyway, after much ado I head over to Coors Light and I find Teen Mortgage playing, who I also previewed before the fest and enjoyed and had planned to see. I ended up missing about 10min of the set (I think) while trying to figure out where the hell I was. Poor Matt went to Coors Light, could not find me (Because I didn’t know where the hell I was), and went to another stage. I owe him about 1,000 steps.
Anyway, Teen Mortgage were great. These 2 guys make a LOT of punky sludgy garagey noise. Any band that wears a Discharge truckers cap on stage can’t be all that bad. Also, this can be the audio quality you can expect for the rest of the Aftershock videos I post. Nice and full sounding schoeps audio.

Pennywise- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/21 Live 4k UHD Punk Fletcher

Alright, back to the Aftershock videos. I made sure to get to the fest in time to see Pennywise. I even got my DPA microphone setup all wired and ready… and then I forgot to hit record. So, this and most of Mastodon’s set doesn’t have the better audio. Bummer. It doesn’t sound that bad, it just could have been way better.

Mastodon- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/21 Metal 4k UDH Live

After Pennywise’s set, I ran over to the Kolas stage for Mastodon’s set. This was my first time seeing them and they were really good. One of the standouts of the fest for sure. This is where I discovered that I didn’t turn on the DPA mics for the past couple hours. I will make another post with the end of the set with the DPA audio. Sounds great.

Mastodon- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/21 Partial song w/ DPA Audio 4K Live

So here is the 3 and a half minutes of Mastodon with DPA audio that I mentioned yesterday. Damnit, it would have been so much better if I had remembered to hit record on the A10. D’oh.

Social Distortion- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca. 10/10/21 Live 4K DPA Audio

This was the surprise set of the fest for me. I used to be a huge Social D fan back in the early 2000’s. I loved the Sex Love and Rock and Roll album- it was one of my most listened-to albums of the past 20 years. When they came out with that Hard Times album, it bored the hell out of me. I went to a show in 2011 and it also bored the hell out of me. So I had kinda written them off as a nostalgia band for the pompadour and classic car crowd.
They do 2 songs from the Sex Love album- not even the hits but a couple of my favorites. They also do a new song called “The Way Things Were”, which sounds like it could be off the Sex Love album. Wow! Sorry I doubted them.
Looking forward to the new album now.

PSA DONE

OK, For this last set of Aftershock, I tried to learn from mistakes made during the first night of Metallica. For that one, I got as close to the VIP rail as I could- I was only 1 row back and I had people that I could shoot over standing in front of me. I thought it was a good plan, until they threw their hands in the air for 2 hours. Oh well.
This time, I went up the hill quite a bit further from the rail, but closer to the stage. Since I was on a steeper incline, I was able to avoid obstructions and the DPA audio sounds better as I was closer to the PA. Live and learn.

This set includes the entire Black Album, performed from back to front. I got to see this at the Orion fest back in 2012, but it was still a rare treat. Plus, I got to see the best encore I have ever seen them perform.
