Sonic Youth- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 8/20/90 xfer from 8mm master enhanced

This one has a story. Back in 1990, I was the manager of the office softball team. We only had 9 players on the same day that Sonic Youth was playing the Crest. So I drove downtown, showed up early to the show, set up the camera and had a friend turn it on. Then I drove back to Citrus Heights and played the game, then sped back downtown to the show. The camera does not move for the first half, until I get there. I also missed filming the opener- Nirvana. D’oh. At least I filmed them at Cattle…

Suicidal Tendencies- UC Irvine, Irvine Ca 8/19/90 xfer from 2nd gen VHS tape Complete show

I found this one for today’s On This Date in History- it’s a 2nd gen VHS tape from Bootleg Cowboys’ collection. I checked online and there is only a poor quality incomplete version on youtube, from what I could find.

Keeping it short because I fractured my arm on Sunday night. Typing with a cast is no fun. Haha

The Rosebuds- Candlerock Lounge, Sacramento Ca. 8/18/90 xfer from master tape enhanced

When I saw The Rosebuds play the Jerry Perry benefit last December, I mentioned to Jim Rivas that I had filmed them back in 1990. So, at his request, here is The Rosebuds from the glorious Candlerock lounge. I can’t believe this place is still open- it was dying back in 1990!
The lighting was pretty uneven, so I tried to enhance it a bit by brightening and increasing exposure. You can now see the right hand side of the stage a bit.
The Rosebuds have always been one of my favorite Sacramento bands, and their performance at Jerry’s benefit was special. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!

The Boon- Candlerock Lounge, Sacramento Ca. 8/18/90 xfer from master tape enhanced

Here is The Boon’s set from that same show as The Rosebuds. The Boon were John Conley & Mike Yoas from Desario, Scott Wagner and I think the drummer’s name was Mike?
Anyway, this is the longest Boon set I saw, and we saw quite a few shows back then. My tripod was broken, so when it rested it looked like the band was playing uphill. I tried to fix that with Adobe, but you can still see the camera flopping around.

Chicken Truck- Off Broadway, St. Louis Mo 8/15/90 xfer from band archive cassette Sbd Bottle Rockets

On This day in History is late today due to Migraine. UGH. So much to say about this one-

I have not recounted this story in a bit, so let’s share it again:
Back in the early 90s, I was friends with Tony Margherita & Bob Andrews who managed Uncle Tupelo, The Bottle Rockets and many more. I had followed UT around and filmed/audio recorded over 10 shows in the span of a couple of years, including the 2 final shows in St. Louis. Since the band was defunct (and Wilco was not the HUGE band they are today), Tony let my good friend Jim stop by and pick up “a few” cassettes in late 1994. Jim goes to the office and calls me:
J(whispering): Dude, there are like 50 tapes here. Do you have Coffee Creek?
Me: No
J: How about X(some other one)
Me: No. Just grab them all and I will sort them out.
So Jim grabs a box and shoves about 50 tapes in, and takes off. Bob and Tony were like :-O. Haha! Thanks guys.

This was one of the tapes in Tony and Bob’s archive that we did NOT pick up at the time. A while afterwards, we got access to more stuff from the band archive… either Michael Pemberton or Steve Brothers got this one after the Uncle Tupelo motherlode. It either came from there or from Doug Morris’ collection (R.I.P.).

Chicken Truck was The Bottle Rockets, before they were called The Bottle Rockets. Henneman/Parr/Parr/Ortman. Most of these songs made early Bottle Rockets albums, and the covers were staples at the time for both Chicken Truck AND Uncle Tupelo.

This is the only live recording of Chicken Truck I have ever seen.

Jawbreaker- KCSB Live in Studio, Santa Barbara 8/8/90 Audio only East Bay Punk

Here’s a tape that must be pretty well-circulated from the 1990s tape trading circles, but has not made its way to youtube yet. This is another one requested by Todd Pritchard, from Jason Ross’ collection.
Side note: This was marked on Jason’s tape as 10/10/89, but he corrected the date to 8/8/90.

Monks of Doom- Pacific Coast Brewing Co, Oakland Ca. 8/4/90 Acoustic Xfer from Master

I have never posted this one because it was way too dark to even see what was going on. Now that I can brighten and increase exposure, you can kinda see. This was a much longer set. Since it was so dark, I shut my camera off 20min into the set. You can add this to the long list of taping regrets.

Mumbo Gumbo- Live at the Palms Official Out of Print release, Davis Ca 8/3/90 Doug Sahm Local Cajun

It’s time for another Local Spotlight! These posts highlight long out of print official releases from bands in and around Sacramento.
Mumbo Gumbo was active from 1990 to 2006, and I have seen them play some shows in the past couple years.

This one comes from the Palms in Davis, which is one of my all time favorite venues. It sounds fantastic. I don’t know if Laurence (house soundman) did this, but nice work.

If anyone listens to this and MUST have the original cassette, it is available at my discogs store. No reasonable offer refused! Haha.

Cool Doug Sahm/Sir Douglas Quintet cover at the end
