Cro-Mags: One Step Beyond, Santa Clara Ca 7/13/86 xfer from master tape w/partial improved audio

This one comes from Tim Redd Gallaher- he mailed me a DVD of this about a month ago- thanks Redd! The master tape is missing/gone but this DVD survived.

The audio track of the video is super distorted- borderline unlistenable. The crazy thing is that I had an audio recording of about 20 minutes of this set- so forward to about 6min 30 seconds if you want listenable audio- it’s pretty decent sounding for the last 19:00.

This is probably the best quality Cro-Mags video from 1986, and it’s absolutely nuts that it finally surfaces in 2025.

Agnostic Front- Fender’s Ballroom, Long Beach Ca 7/12/86 xfer from unknown gen soundboard tape NYHC

Back in the old punk rock tape trading days of the mid-1980’s, there were a lot of bad quality tapes. REALLY awful sounding stuff. Sometimes a trader would list a tape as a soundboard and it would be a mediocre audience. If you could actually hear the music= SOUNDBOARD! Actual soundboards would almost always be hissy and generated.
Every once in a while, you would get lucky and get a tape that sounds really nice. This one is really a soundboard and pretty damned good. Even though it is an unknown gen tape, there is little to no tape hiss. My only complaints were that it was lacking in bass (which I fixed in EQ) and vocals are a little buried (which I COULD fix if there is enough demand).
Overall, a nice sounding set during the Cause for Alarm era. Check out how low they are on this bill- holy crap what a lineup!

The Pandoras- Adams Ave Theater, San Diego Ca 7/11/86 xfer from 2nd gen VHS tape Kim Shattuck Muffs

When I was digitizing all of Eddie and John’s VHS tapes, I had some space on the hard drive so I went and pulled a random, uncirculated VHS tape from the collection. This one isn’t great quality (and filmed WAY BACK THERE with some good zoom action), but given that it was filmed before camcorders were commonplace, I felt it was worthy of a post.

Features one of the greatest musicians/people ever, Kim Shattuck on bass.

G.B.H. – Oasis Ballroom, Sacramento Ca. 7/16/86 xfer from Master or 1st gen cassette Audio GBH

alright, I got my Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck back and I had to test it out, so here are a couple of shows for you. GBH is coming to Sacramento tomorrow- thanks to Brian for bringing them for the first time in a while. Here is a tape from the archive, done with the old non-pro setup. It doesn’t sound that terrible, given the room and the recorder. Taped by with Mark Martin or Ricky. Mark, do you know if you taped this? Is this tape the master?

Camper Van Beethoven- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca 7/5/86 xfer from band archive cassette

Since a lot of focus was on Black Sabbath’s day long festival, I figured that I would wait until it was over, and also post something non-metal for today’s on this date in history. This one will do.
Jonathan loaned me his tapes back in the late 90s (thank you) and I “digitized” them my lining my Nakamichi deck into a new (at the time) philips CD recorder- the high end CDR-880! That thing cost a LOT of money at the time, but it did a nice job recording CD’s. We had this trick where we would insert one of the expensive CD recorder CD’s, let it read it and then pull the disc tray out and replace the disc with a standard CDR, which was about 10 times cheaper!
This show took place a few months before I discovered the band. I would have loved to see them at Starry Plough. I did get to see them at Pappy and Harriets, so that is a close approximation.
This tape had some harsh and slightly distorted high end. I did my best to EQ it out while keeping the crispness of the highs intact. It does have an odd swirly high end sound now.

Dissonance- KDVS Live in Studio A, Davis Ca 7/2/86 xfer f/master audio cassette Flint Mi Punk Hardco

The last time I grabbed a handful of tapes to digitize from Ken Doose’s collection, there were a ton of KDVS Studio A sessions. Here is one from a band that was on tour out here from the midwest. Pretty cool. There was some light reception static that cleaned up nicely (after a few minutes) in Izotope.

This one is pretty distorted, but that is just how the band sounded in studio. Stick with it for a few minutes and it gets better- both with the mix and the reception static.
