Meat Puppets- Mccabe’s Guitar Shop, Santa Monica Ca 10/2/92 DAT Master Xfer Nakamichi CM300 Mic

Wow, this one sounds pretty damned good. It was a little light on the bass so I bumped it up in EQ. This was the first show of 3 at McCabe’s that week- this one on Friday, and then 2 sets on Saturday. I did not even know of the Sunday show at Raji’s until I got a cassette of it later- it’s probably best since I would have killed myself going to yet another show…

Meat Puppets- Cruise Cafe, Oslo Norway 2/6/92 xfer from 3rd gen soundboard cassette complete show

I usually would not mess around with a 3rd gen soundboard tape of a taper-friendly band, but this one is an exception because 1) The performance absolutely rips 2) it still sounds great with minimal hiss 3) it is not available anywhere else and 4) I think my friend KN got it from legendary Meat Puppets soundman/Black Flag roadie, Davo. He would tape all of the shows and give some of us (KN, Jon Vogel, etc) copies of the best ones.

So that’s why I picked this for On This Day in History. Look at that setlist. HIGHLY Recommended as a wonderful escape to current events.

Meat Puppets- Barrymore Theater, Madison Wi 1/25/90 transfer from 1st gen VHS tape Soundboard Audio

It’s time for this week’s Patreon Voter’s choice! As usual, they picked out a gem. This seems to be a local TV production, albeit 1 camera with raw soundboard audio. I don’t recall ever realizing that- really cool!

I got this in a one-off trade from someone in Wisconsin. Can’t remember their name.

Meat Puppets- Pine Street Theater, Portland Or 12/14/88 xfer f/3rd gen 4 track soundboard cassette

Finally, today’s On This Date in History. This one was not quite as good as I remembered. Recording a multitrack mix live is a big challenge- I did it quite a bit in the late 90s and early 00’s. It is easy to peak channels without realizing it, especially if the band is loud in the club. It’s not bad, it’s just not as fantastic as I recall.

I was surprised that this wasn’t out there on YT or live music archive- taper friendly band. I guess this 3rd gen cassette will need to do.

Meat Puppets- Club Minimal, Sacramento 3/11/84 unknown source AUDIO only EDITED

HUGE thanks to Jim McLain for making this sound as good as it can. Hiss and hum removed, L/R levels leveled, etc!

So this is the only document that I have been able to find from an actual Club Minimal concert. The only other thing I have been able to find is Terry O’Reilly’s crowd video footage, but no music.
Anyway, this was from the old cassette trading days. Back before digital (sonny), you never knew what you were going to get. Sometimes you would trade a tape and it would sound pristine. Other times, they would sound like this. There is a hum on this that drives me INSANE. Someone must have dubbed the tape too close to a TV source- maddening. If anyone knows how to de-hum a wav file, let me know.
PS: Hummmm (UPDATE: Jim fixed it!! THANKS!)
