The Bobbyteens- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 4/25/98 xfer from pre-fm master tape

Back to the KALX archive today. The Bobbyteens were a garage rock’n’roll band from South City, California, formed in 1996. Russel Quan was in the band, who I have a ton of mutual friends with. Danielle Pimm, Karen Singletary, Lisa Schenberg, and Tina Lucchesi were in the band as well.
They have a bunch of releases on smaller independent labels, along with one each on Estrus and Burger.

The Donnas- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/17/98 xfer from pre-fm master cassette Lookout Punk

Here’s one that some folks will enjoy. There is a lot of really cool stuff in Rick Sylvain’s box of tapes that I still need to digitize. It’s nice to hear a quality live set from The Donna’s early days. Thanks Rick!
I figured that since I googled “The Donnas KALX” and Steve’s The List popped up, I would use that as the image for the post. Find the Donnas post in The List! Everyone from those days knows about The List- no explanation necessary.

The Kirby Grips- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 12/13/97 xfer from master cassette tape SFTRI

Happy 2024 everyone, here is another bay area-based band performing live in the KALX studio. It looks like they put out a couple of releases on my ex-brother in law’s label, Sympathy for the Record Industry. Cool- I had not heard them before this. Hopefully Rick will see this post, since he is off enjoying the weather in Australia! I am not jealous at all.

Bracket- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 11/1/97 xfer f/ Pre-FM Master Cassette East Bay Pop Punk

Let’s make it an all-KALX audio week. I’ll get to more Wayne V stuff next week. Here is one of the more well-known bands that I have come across so far. At this point, Bracket had 2 albums out on Caroline and 1 on Fat. They played during a fund raising drive, which is pretty cool of them.

The Tantrums- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 10/18/97 xfer f/ pre-fm master cassette East Bay Punk

And another one from Rick Sylvain’s treasure trove of cassettes from Friday Night Live show on KALX. So many well-known and not so well known bands have played this show.
The band consisted of Devil Doll on vocals, Pete Rypins on guitar, Andy Contreras on bass, and Joey on drums. They released a 7″ and 10″ in the mid’90s to 2000.
Good sounding one- well done, Rick.

Cell Block 5- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 10/11/97 xfer from pre-fm master cassette punk

Here’s another KALX live in studio thing from Rick’s collection of cassettes.
Dave Dalton- ? (I assume guitar)
Morgan- Lead Guitars
Tommy- Drums
and they mention Christopher, but no mention of what he does.

This was Dave’s band, after the Screaming Bloody Marys dissolved for the first time. They put out a couple of full length CD’s in the 1998-2000 time frame, and it seems that they had some lineup changes as their discogs listing makes no mention of these members (except for Dave).

The Slow Poisoners- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 9/20/97 xfer from master pre-fm audio cassette

It’s been a couple weeks since I posted one of these KALX live in studio performances, it’s a good time do put up another one. I still have all the reels here and I plan to get those done soon, but it may require baking tapes, and I need to learn how. I should get to that in a year or so. Sorry for the delay. We’ll do the cassettes in the interim.
(Discogs) Slow Poisoners were a US rock band created by Andrew Goldfarb in San Francisco (active 1996-2004), started as a 5-piece band in 1996 with Andrew Goldfarb (vocals, guitar), Mica Pollock (cello), replaced by Rich Trott (guitars, keyboards), Tim Plicka (bass replaced in 2000 by Christopher Webber, Dan Agrella (drums), the group slowly became thinner and thinner over the course of the years and became a one man band: The Slow Poisoner.
I think it is pretty clever that Goldfarb just made the band name singular when he became the only member. Maybe that is what we should require with some of these rock & metal bands who tour with 1 original member.

Soda Pop F*ck You- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 9/6/97 xfer from pre-fm master cassette tape SKA

This one goes out to all people who are trying to get back into the swing of working after a 3 day weekend. This was one of the cassettes from Rick Sylvain that I digitized a while back and rediscovered it on the hard drive.
It seems like Rick had just about every bay area local band play in the studio over the years. It’s pretty amazing.

Limp- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 6/97 xfer from pre-fm master cassette tape East Bay Pop Punk

Last night, I was prepping up some more KALX content to post this week, and this 4min clip by Limp happened to be at the beginning of another tape. I might have the full Limp set here somewhere on cassette or reel, but I have not come across it yet. So, here is the 1 song… just in case that’s all that exists. Good band- enjoy!

The Dwarves- KALX Blag in studio DJ w/Jesse, Berkeley Ca 9/17/96 xfer f/Master audio Cassette

Over to Arica Pelino’s tape collection today for this one. Blag joins Jesse Luscious(Townley) for a guest DJ spot. I listened to about 5 minutes and heard 1 F-bomb dropped. Jesse sounds nervous about what Blag might say next.
