Pinhead Gunpowder- KALX live in studio, Berkeley Ca 9/3/96 xfer from master audio cassette PGHP

Here’s one from Arica Pelino’s tape collection today. I was searching online for an image for today’s post, and I came across someone who had already posted this on youtube. It is 3 or 4 minutes shorter than this one, and people are complaining about the quality/issues with the tape in comments. As I have said before, people don’t understand the struggle with analog gear back in the 80s/90s. It was bulky and problematic- tape decks would wear out and screw up tapes. I wish those commenters were trying to tape stuff back then, lol.

The Loudmouths- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 7/13/96 xfer pre-FM Master Cassette Midnite Snaxxx

I still have a few more of these KALX tapes ready, so let’s put these up on Mondays for the time being.
The Loudmouths were active from 1993-2001, put out a couple of albums and a bunch of 7″s, then amicably parted ways. It’s hard to tell what all of the members went on to do, but Dulcinea (Midnite Snaxxx) played guitar for them.

The Muffs, Queers and Cub- KALX Station ID Videos, Berkeley Ca August 1995 xfer from 8mm Master Tape

It’s a collections post! This one from Rick Sylvain’s KALX collection.

I was planning on continuing the Acoustic songs that I had been doing the last couple of months from Rick, but just yesterday Johnny Savage, who was also a DJ at KALX during the 90s, told me that he has full aircheck tapes of those shows which also includes interviews! Wow! So let’s put those aside and pull this one out.

It is really cool to not only see the KALX studio from back in 1995, but also seeing Kim and the rest of the bands having fun with this.

Actionslacks- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/13/95 xfer from pre-fm master cassette tape

Last week, I mentioned that I would be posting some lesser-known bands from the KALX live in studio archive. Here is one of them- Actionslacks. It looks like they had a pretty good run with at least 11 releases between 1995 and 2010. They had a couple of releases on the Arena Rock label, who also had Harvey Danger at around the same time in the late 90s.
They even had my friend and talented bass player/lawyer/photographer Aaron Rubin in the band for a stretch. Cool.
Anyway, enjoy and thanks Rick for recording all of this!

The Rip Offs- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/6/95 xfer from master cassette tape Punk Garage

It’s KALX tape archive time! You can expect a couple audio posts from Wayne V and Rick Sylvain’s collections for the next year or so, with some other surprise stuff thrown in along the way.
This one is really cool- there is not much Rip Offs stuff recorded from back then. If you are friends with Jon Von or any of the band, please tag them.

Lois- KALX Acoustic Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca mid 1990s xfer f/KALX archive tape Indie K Records

It’s time for another one from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive of tapes. There was someone who commented on Youtube and let me know that they were the DJ for these sessions, but I lost track of the person. I think they mentioned that they have complete sessions w/interviews. Please reach out at shaynestacy at hotmail, gmail etc.

Mr. T Experience- Kalx live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 12/30/94 xfer from master Pre-FM cassette MTX

I met up with Rick Arroyo last weekend and he dropped off a bunch of KALX cassettes and reels- most are in studio performances and station ID’s by musicians from the mid-90s. At first glance, it looks like there is a lot of duplication between the cassettes and reels- I think that they ran a recording on a reel along with a cassette as a backup copy… and it’s a good thing that they did a cassette for this one, because the reel fell off the machine during MTX’ set!
MTX did a full hour-long set here along with some funny banter in between songs w/the DJ. Sounds like this was one of Joel’s first performances with the band. There are also some very funny station ID’s after this on the tape but there is a LOT of annoying clicking on the cassette, so I need to Izotope that one before handing it over to KALX. There was also either a big blob of white stuff or missing oxide on side B, so I had to use the 670zx to get it to transfer.
Speaking of KALX, I’m tagging all the KALX DJ’s I know. Happy to share an upload link/photos or whatever for their archives. Let me know!
Thanks Rick.

Screaming Bloody Marys- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 12/23/94 xfer from pre-FM master tape

I’m a little late today, work isn’t stopping. Thanks for the nice birthday wishes- on my timeline, via messenger and text messages. Being an introvert, it still blows my mind that I have gotten to know so many people through the hobby and you still care about what I post. It makes it fun.

There is a really cool show happening at the Cafe Colonial this Saturday- Greg from the Rip Offs new band is playing, along with these guys- Screaming Bloody Marys. This show is from 1994, but the band has come back and is currently active and playing shows. Features Sacramento resident/Die Laughing Records dude Dave Dalton. Head on out to the show if you get a chance!

Portashrine- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 12/19/94 xfer f/ pre-fm master cassette east bay punk

Here’s the last KALX post for a little while. Why, you might ask. My good friend Radley Hirsch (former Gilman soundman and STILL doing sound installs) gifted me/the archive with a NEW Otari MX-5050 reel to reel machine and a tape baking machine. Thanks Radley! This allows me to shift over to the KALX reel to reel transfers, starting in about a month.
The quality on this one seems to be good, but all voices- vocals and DJ’s- sound overdriven and slightly distorted. I hope that there is a reel for this one that is better, and this was just a cassette issue.
The band put out 2 7″ and one comp CD and that was it… and it doesn’t seem that the members went on to any other bands.

Moist- Kalx Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 11/18/94 xfer from Pre-FM Master Cassette Tape Stockton Punk

I love it when one of my archival projects collides with a Sacramento-based band… even better when they are one of my favorites from here! The band had a few members while they were active- the only constants were (I think) Sunita Bhardwaj (Guitar & vocals), and Eric Torres (Guitar). They have Tony Muth on drums for this session, but Karen Simmons and Wendy Powell from the great Sacramento band The Skirts also did time in the band.
They only released 2 7″ EPs and a split EP with Screw 32 (fun fact- that split was one of Side One Dummy’s very first releases). So, lots of great Sacramento and general punk rock history involved.
Stick with the show- the vocals come up in the mix a bit.
