I’ll keep this one short, since I know a bunch of folks are visiting family and friends today. This one comes from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive. I can’t find much recorded output- just 1 song on a Beserkeley Records comp on discogs, and a self-titled album that is on Amazon Music.

It has been way too long since I have shared something from Rick Sylvain’s KALX trove of tapes and today seemed like a good day for it. The Hellbillys were a psychobilly bands from the bay area. They all used stage names so I can’t tell who the members were, but I do know that Barrie Evans (Christ on Parade’s vocalist during the “Sounds of Nature” era) was the vocalist.

I debated posting this one, but there is enough of this show that isn’t shazam’ing to justify posting. Regardless, it is a really cool show that Rick Sylvain put together. This was around the same time that the Rolling Stones played California on their Voodoo Lounge tour, so Rick put together an impressive assortment of Stones covers performed by some well-known and some obscure artists. It’s a fun listen. It was also clearly past Rick’s bedtime- he sounds TIRED. Haha!

None of my 4 reel to reel decks seem to be working properly, so I get to take them ALL in to the shop. Do you have any idea how much that is going to cost? I don’t even want to think about it. That means that the KALX reels will be transferred soon- instead I am starting with the cassettes from Rick Sylvain’s collection. Expect a couple every week for the foreseeable future. There are some really awesome tapes in there. Here is an early AFI set. Fans are gonna love this one.

Last one for today, from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive of tapes. This reminds me that I need to add a bunch of notes that another KALX DJ commented and it sounds like they might have tapes as well.
Speaking of tapes, I get to hang out with my old friend Craig Hilmer today. He taped a bunch of stuff in Austin and San Antonio back in the 80s and early 90s. Let’s hope he brought a box of masters.
I’ve mentioned before that these KALX soundboard simulcasts were a crapshoot. Bad words could slip out, board mixes could be uneven.. and this one checks all of those boxes. I did my best to rebalance and bring guitar up in the mix, but that guitar must have been BLASTING from the stage, haha. Hope they didn’t get in trouble for language.

Here’s another one from Rick (Sylvain) Arroyo’s box of tapes- I really like the way that he would interview these up and coming bands at the time. Expect some lesser known bands to be posted from Kalx — looking into some of them on discogs and it looks like some never released anything. Stay tuned.

This is the earliest KALX live in studio that I have posted from Rick Sylvain’s collection so far. It sounds like it might be one of Rick’s first ones ever. What a way to start it off- this band is so great. This also includes station ID’s at the end (including outtakes) that are pretty clearly pulled from the reel to reel tape.

I had a couple of short KALX things from Rick Sylvain, so I decided to post them both today. So, enjoy… two for Monday? Tuesday belongs to Tour Manager Doug, so two for Monday it is. At least for this week. This one is clearly the raw/unedited station ID takes from CC when they did some kind of Tower instore. So cool!

Ah, Monday! Another 100+ degree day in Sacramento. It’s getting old, folks. What isn’t getting old is fresh 30-year-old content from the KALX Archive! Especially with an under documented band like Red Aunts. KALX interviewed the band during their show at Bottom of the Hill in 1993- then it sounds like they edited it together with some album tracks and broadcast it sometime later. From Rick Sylvain’s collection of tapes.

It’s early but not too early for today’s audio post. I digitized some of KALX’ reels a few months back and most of them sounded terrible- the tapes probably need to be baked. This is one of the only ones that transferred well. Good X interview with a DJ named Xandy.
