I had a couple of short KALX things from Rick Sylvain, so I decided to post them both today. So, enjoy… two for Monday? Tuesday belongs to Tour Manager Doug, so two for Monday it is. At least for this week. Here is an acoustic performance of The Verve. Sounds great!

I promised Robert McKeown that I would post something today, but that plan went down the tubes- stupid work getting in the way anyway… so on to the KALX archive! KALX would broadcast some shows live at Gilman as they happened- they would simulcast the board feed. It was usually a straight board mix, but there were some where Radley set up some audience mics and ran it through a mixer for KALX. This one sounds like a straight board mix.

For our collections post, we have this one from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive. As you can see, there are a bunch of bands playing one (or a few) songs acoustic in the KALX studio. No dates noted for any of the performances. This is the Chills’ 2 song performance.

Happy DST Monday! I woke up with a migraine and it has continued to get worse. Ugh. Stupid tater tots. Here is one from Rick Sylvain’s collection. the DJ who actually hosted these sessions isn’t Rick and he commented on some of these before, letting me know he had the entire thing including interviews. Please reach out if you see this- thanks!

Here’s one from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive. I don’t think this one is complete. Robert Scott from The Bats self-released some CDRs a while back, and there is one called “Live To Air KALX” which has 8 songs. Hopefully I will find the complete performances on one of the many reel to reels I have to digitize. Anyway, enjoy The Black And The Blue for now. Slightly distorted. Hopefully the reel will be cleaner, if it exists.

It’s Monday and I am still lagging from the weekend. It was pretty wild. A few weeks back, I really wanted to see a show in Austin, Texas so I went on priceline and did one of those old-school “blind purchase” round trip flights for cheap- $250 round trip to Texas on a weekend was a killer deal. Well, now I know why. I got in on Friday after midnight and had to wait in line for over an hour for my rental car. I was able to get a decent amount of sleep that night (6 hours), but I learned that the show started Saturday at 10pm and ended at 2, and my flight back was at 5:30am. Long story (kinda) short, I ended up not sleeping on Saturday night and getting an hour or 2 on the plane. Missed the KK Downing show last night because I could not keep my eyes open. Slept for 10 hours last night and this groggy head is still happening at 2pm. It guess this is how I am feeling today. It was totally worth it, btw. That had nothing to do with today’s post. I plan to mix it up a bit this week (no tour manager Doug Tuesday! Oh no!), but let’s get things going with an Eggplant post. This is one that was simulcast by KALX. i was thinking about rebalancing this in Izotope, but the mix moves around too much. It gets good a few minutes in.

I was trying to post last night’s show, but YT has decided to take its sweet time to process that one. I think this is a pretty decent consolation prize. This one comes from Radley Hirsch’s generous archive of tapes that he digitized, and I don’t see it anywhere on the internet. They sound really great here.

I posted a different version of this set from my collection a while back, but this version from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection is much better quality. It’s been a busy day, so I’ll leave it at that. Videos tomorrow.

After I posted the Soup KALX show, DJ Last Will asked me if I had any other KALX live in studio tapes. I didn’t have any from shows that he hosted, but here is Condemned Attitude in their 2nd appearance ever, after splitting from Attitude Adjustment. Condemned Attitude were Andy Andersen, Chris Scaparro, Keith Chatham, Rick Strahl, plus a few drummers (may have been Eric Brecht at this time). They then morphed into Attitude, then Two-Bit Thief. This has a little reception static and the mix fluctuates. It sounds like they were playing pretty loud for an in studio.

Here’s another one that Todd Pritchard pulled from Jason Ross’ collection when he was here a while back. This one starts with low levels, then too high, and then it gets good about 2 minutes in. Awesome early, pre-Gilman east bay punk artifact! Last Will, how did you feel about all of the profanity on your show? Did you get any follow up calls from the FCC? It was hilariously shocking to hear all of that happen.
