Neil Young and Crazy Horse- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca 4/7/91 xfer from master cassette Nakamichi 300

What an ordeal. I had planned to post something different for today’s “On This Date in History”, but I discovered that someone posted it a couple years ago with the wrong tape info. The I was going to do a Victims Family video from 1991 and I pop the VHS in, and the band is playing in complete darkness. THEN, I looked for these tapes to digitize and they were not in the tape #1924/1925 slot. As a last resort, I searched my “On This Date” PC directory and there it was. I had already digitized this months ago and forgot I did it. Self-inflicted frustration.

Speaking of ordeal- I can’t remember how I got this equipment into Arco- I remember having help from a friendly usher (Kenny maybe?), but there was NO WAY that I got this in on my own- the deck was 10″x 6″ and weighed a ton without the 4 “D” cell batteries that it took! I also had 2 Nakamichi CM-300 mics and a ridiculous amount of microphone cord. Luckily I was in the middle of a row or security would have pounced on me- I was comically obvious.

On top of it all, one of the 2 mics would not give a signal. You hear a mic cut early on and once again later in the set- that was me trying to get the other mic to work, but I finally just settled on taping in 1 channel. Just fixed it up today so it can be heard in 2-channel mono.

It sounds pretty decent for Arco- the arena was notorious for terrible concert sound, but I was really close to the stage so the drums and bass are pretty clear, with vocal and guitar a bit echoey/distant. Not bad, probably my best sounding tape from Arco.

Youtube forced me to edit out the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning- Jimi’s estate = no bueno

Ride- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 4/6/91 direct xfer from master tape

This show is a bit of a mystery- either Jason Ellis or I taped it (audio only, they would not allow video), but we can’t rember who taped it and with what equipment. He had a Sony WMd6C at the time w/ECM909 microphone. I had a Marantz PMD430 and Nakamichi CM300 Microphone. Ride sounds like a PMD430 recording (sounds nice with some high end phasing) while the lush sounds like a D6 recording (Lush were always so midrangey that the Sony/909 tapes sounded less than stellar). Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show- this is for Chris Macias and Dennis Yudt.

Uncle Tupelo- Lafayette’s, Oxford MS 4/6/91 Soundboard xfer from band archive audio tape

Here’s another gem from the uncle tupelo band archive. When I first got these, I had to get them transferred immediately and sent back to Tony. As a result, I never gave some of these shows a proper listen. This is one of them- damn, this one sounds good and is a great performance!

This tape was unlabeled but to Michael Pemberton’s sleuth work & a quick factorybelt dot net search, I figured out what it was.

Lush- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 4/6/91 xfer from master Audio tape Marantz PMD430 Nakamichi CM300

So here is something- I taped this show 30 years ago yesterday, and I don’t recall ever trading it out to anyone. When I pulled it from the cassette case, it was rewound and looked untouched. This one is probably uncirculated.
We tried to get permission to video that night, but it was a no-go from the bands so I snuck the PMD430 (which is HUGE) into the video bag and popped the Nakamichi mic (which is HUGE) out of the corner of the bag, pointing right at the PA. It turned out pretty nice!
I am just learning that Lush was at Cattle the night before and hung out with people and got drunk… and ran up a big bar tab. They even mention it during this recording. So awesome. Brian, just curious- did you guys comp them the drinks, or did it come out of their paycheck the next night? 🙂
This one is for Karen Simmons, who had a good friend (Chris) in the band.

Equipment used: Marantz PMD430 (like a Sony WMD5) and Makamichi CM300 mic… I think.

Go Dog Go- Mansion Cellars, Davis Ca. 4/5/91? Audio Soundboard Master Tape Magnolia Thunderfinger

Here’s another nugget of joy from Barry Mills Prickett’s collection. The board mix on this one was way unbalanced- it was almost all vocals at the start, and the raw board mix boosts the guitars slightly at the 7:00 mark. I did everything I could to get some more guitar and bass in the mix using Izotope rx7.
The date is a bit of a guess. They mention that it is Paul Stanley Niklewcz’ birthday which (if FB is right) is on 4/5. I googled around and 4/5/91 was on a friday night. If Skid or Paul have any more detail or a correction, I would be happy to hear it.

Agent Orange- Sacramento State? College, Sacramento Ca.4/91 Lossless master videotape xfer

Here is an incredible gift from Nick Serra. Nick is one of a small circle of my friends who works on getting the best tape transfers possible. He (along with King Bean) helped me get my lossless setup working. He gifted me this video (filmed by Dave Brooks) to post here, since it is Sacramento related. Check out his channel at @nicks2319 on YouTube. Thanks, Nick!
Here is a video of what could be a show at Sac State, like the Dread Zeppelin show I saw in 1990. It is listed as “Sacramento College”, but the dates line up to that series of shows.
