Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty- Troubadours of Folk Fest, UCLA, Los Angeles 6/5/93 1st gen VHS tape

Here is the thing that took all day yesterday to digitize and process.
When I lived in L.A., I went to this festival. I don’t know why- it wasn’t like I was a mega fan of any one artist on the bill. I liked some, but not sure why I was there. It was held by Rhino Records and Ben & Jerry’s and had a who’s who of folk acts. I brought my DAT and I have already posted a few sets to the archive.
I met this guy in the audience with a small/low tripod and a shirt & hat that said “video crew”. I went up and introduced myself, since his gear looked nothing like the official professional stuff that was being used closer to the stage. Sure enough, he just wore a shirt and hat with Video Crew and walked right in with his stuff- he wasn’t part of the camera crew at the event. Man, that takes balls of steel to pull that off.
Anyway, this is only pt. 2 of the McGuinn performance, but I think this is all of the Petty footage. My pt1 VHS tape snapped and I need to repair it… Lots of great stuff on there, including the Kingsmen (spinal tap’s folk parody band). I did the entire pt2 VHS tape with a bunch of great stuff. I think it has Joni Mitchell’s performance (first in 20 years at the time)

10,000 Maniacs- Greek Theatre, Los Angeles Ca. 6/2/93 xfer from DAT Master Nakamichi CM300 Mic Live

I never considered posting this one because I thought that there was an FM broadcast of the same show. I just realized that they played 2 nights at the Greek- I taped night 1, the mobile truck got night 2. So here it is- decent quality, typical “good mic in an amphitheatre” sound.

L7- Federal Building, Los Angeles Ca 5/27/93 xfer f/low gen VHS tape

It’s Friday and it is finally time for the Patreon voter’s choice! Man, what a busy week.

This one comes from Todd Nakamine’s collection and it looks like a pretty low gen dub of an L7 show outisde of the Federal Building in L.A. The backlight on this one makes the band very dark to start, but it improves as it goes on. I also brightened it as much as I could without washing out the band. Sounds pretty good too.


btw, voting closed on this last Sunday- well before the band’s farewell tour announcement. Just a coincidence…

Chaos UK- All Nations Center, Los Angeles Ca 5/14/93 xfer from VHS tape Punk

You get not one, but TWO posts from Jason Ross’ collection today. It just happened that the Ont This Date post came from his collection, plus he was up for an audio post today.

I digitized this from one of Jason’s VHS tapes over 5 years ago. It’s pretty decent quality for an unknown VHS gen tape.

Neil Young- Greek Theater, Los Angeles Ca. 9/22/92 xfer from DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300 Solo

Here’s another Neil Young solo show that I taped when I lived down there. What a week- 3 Neil shows during the week (and waking up to work all day the next day), and then Pavement/Mudhoney/Cobain/Sonic Youth on the weekend. Not a bad week at all.
The recording here is okay. Some clapping/chatter

Neil Young- Greek Theater, Los Angeles Ca. 9/21/92 Audio only xfer from DAT Master Nakamichi CM300

I moved to L.A. on the last weekend of August 1992, and hit a bunch of shows in late 92 into 1993. There was so much happening in the area, you could see something every night. My big regret is not digging into the smaller clubs to see what was playing- I only went to Raji’s once, and never went to Jabberjaw or Hell’s Gate. Oh well, hindsight and all that.
Another cool thing was being able to see artists play multiple times- I saw/taped Neil 3x in Sep of 92. They sound pretty decent but the crowd is a bit chatty.

Matthew Sweet- Greek Theater, Los Angeles Ca 8/27/92 DAT Audience Master Nakamichi CM300

We were too late to catch Matthew’s opening set on night 1 of the Indigo Girls’ 2 night run at The Greek, but I made sure to show up early (which meant leaving work/home SUPER early because of L.A. traffic) to catch his set. I was pretty lucky to catch a show from the Girlfriend tour, albeit an opening set.

Indigo Girls- Greek Theater, Los Angeles Ca 8/27/92 DAT Audience Master Nakamichi CM300 Mic

Man, I was busy in the summer of 1992. I was taping shows in northern cal in July, then packed everything up and moved to the L.A. area in early August and already back taping shows a couple weeks later. I wish I still had that much energy.
Like the Robyn Hitchcock show I posted yesterday, this 2nd night sounds better and is a longer/better show.

Happy Monday everyone. As you can probably tell, I am just plowing through my DATs in order for the weekday audio posts. So far, we are on DAT #26 out of 2,000. Expect these weekday posts to go on forever.
This one happened right around the time I moved to L.A… in fact, this might have been the first show I attended after moving. I was never able to get a really good recording out of the Greek. That place and my Nakmachi mic did not play well together. Oh well. Warts and all, here it is.

Swervedriver- Club with No Name, Los Angeles Ca 2/12/92 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape

Today is the day for one of the VHS tapes in my collection to be posted. Since the capture PC is endlessly occupied, I figured I would find something on the RAID that was already done, and I came across this. This was the tour with Poster Children and I also have their set on the same tape.
