Fugazi- Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles Ca 11/8/95 Master Video w/ DAT Master Soundboard Audio

I usually post obscure audio on Monday, but since I didn’t post on Saturday I will make up for it here.
Huge thanks to Gary Davis for digitizing his master video and sending it my way to be synched and posted- that was very kind.
This one had a funny story- I had heard that Fugazi was OK with soundboard recordings, but this was L.A. and the Shrine was huge. I was not holding out much hope plugging in to the board for this one. I sneak the DAT in and head over to the board and my old friend Greg Dean was there! We had worked together at Valley Parcel and now he was running one of the biggest? (best for sure) audio production companies in L.A. along with his friend Greg. He plugs me right in and lets me stand in the board area (the place was PACKED). Meeting Greg here and at the Geraldine Fibbers show in Aron’s records parking lot earlier in the year reconnected us permanently. It’s fun to watch Greg’s world travels with Green Day, Social D, Megadeth, and now Riot Games. Awesome.
The mix was great- I did a little rebalancing in Izotope RX8, boosting guitars and such.

Wayne Kramer- Rhino Records, Los Angeles 5/18/95 xfer from master videotape with DAT Audio MC5

Here’s a post with purpose. This guy, Wayne Kramer(original member of the MC5) is coming to Harlow’s tonight to play tracks from MC5’s catalog, along with some new songs from an upcoming MC5 release.
Shockingly, the show has not sold out yet. Harlow’s looks to be the smallest venue of the 2 week tour, and tickets are available at the door. You won’t want to miss this one.
OK, to the video. This in-store was to celebrate/promote the release of The Hard Stuff, released in 95. It remains the loudest in-store I have ever attended. I had posted this before, but the camera audio was distorted- this DAT audio sounds much better, albeit without much vocal in the mix.
I had always thought that I filmed this set, but you can see my plump, dress shirt and big eyeglass wearing ass fiddling with the DAT machine at the end of the set. I guess Todd filmed it. Thanks, Todd!
Oh, and if you have read this far: if you go to the show, seek me (Shayne) out and I will buy you a beer from the bar. I have this $100 gift card that I bought to help venues while closed and I can’t seem to get rid of it.

Wilco- Rhino Records, Los Angeles Ca 5/13/95 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape w/DAT Audio Jeff Tweedy Dad

When I mentioned yesterday that I had this video & my master dat tape that needed to be synched, I didn’t realize that it had already been done many years ago. I think that JEMS might have sent this DVD my way 10+ years ago.

The video was filmed by RG and I taped on DAT with Coresound mics for the audio track. This was probably one of the best quality tapes I got out of those mics- they were pretty bassy & muddy at times. There is a 4 minute audio cut where I didn’t realize my battery died and had to do a quick swap. I don’t miss the old battery pack days.

Wilco- Rhino Records, Los Angeles Ca. 5/13/95 Acoustic Xfer from DAT Master Audiotape

Back in the pre-internet days, getting information about shows(especially smaller ones at non traditional venues) was spotty. I once missed an Uncle Tupelo show while I was following them on tour because I didn’t know!
So on the way out of the Wilco show at the Whiskey the night before, someone handed me a flyer. Wilco were playing Rhino Records the next day- I had no idea! While taping this show, I learned that Wayne Kramer was playing a week later! I went to that, then lost contact with what was happening there. That’s how it was then- you must go regularly or you lose out.
This recording sounds really nice for the equipment used- some people have mistaken it for a soundboard. I just had my head about 6 inches from a speaker on one side, and the band was playing into my other ear.

The Dragons- The Dragonfly, Los Angeles Ca. 2/7/95 xfer from 8mm master tape!

Here’s a great video of The Dragons, shot by Todd Nakamine with my camera. Todd has always had amazing musical taste, and he does it again here. He drove from his house to pick up my camera in whittier(wrong way), and then back to L.A. to the show. So glad he did it, as I ended up loving the bands he filmed.

The Muffs- Dragonfly, Los Angeles Ca. 2/7/95 xfer from 8mm master tape pt 1

I lived in the L.A. area from 1992-1995. I had 2 good friends when I lived there- Todd Nakamine was one of them. We met at a Penelope Houston show at Bogart’s shortly after I loved there in 1992 or 93. We both filmed shows. In 1995, Todd’s camcorder died, so he would drive out from Redondo Beach (I think), pick up the TR-81, then go back and tape a show. He did this a few times- once for this show, once for a fem2fem in-store performance. That’s an hour round trip, that was dedication! Anyway, Todd was always trying to get me to see this band called The Muffs. I never did, and then years later they become one of my all-time favories. Glad I have the tape now. The audio is extremely distorted- sorry about that. They must have been loud.

The Nonce- Interview on KMEL-FM Mid 1990s xfer from Hi8 Master tape Enhanced Hip Hop

I love videos like this. Steve went over to KMEL with his video camera for an interview with The Nonce. It looks like they had one release on American Recordings in 1995, so this was probably right around that time. I really like seeing the behind the scenes stuff like this. Also, who is the dude in the red and white flannel at the start of the video? He looks so familiar.

The Nonce- Los Angeles area, mid 1990s xfer from Hi8 Master Tape enhanced Hip Hop

Here’s another one from Steve Rogers’ collection of tapes. He can’t recall the venue, it might be the Dragonfly. I thought the stage was higher at that club though…
This one was super dark so I had to really push the brightness/contrast and denoise in order to see anything. That’s another thing- I recall Dragonfly having better lighting as well.

Butterglory- Jabberjaw Cafe, Los Angeles Ca 12/4/94 xfer from DAT Clone Full Concert Live Indie Rock

I tried to find a picture of the exterior of Jabberjaw while it was in operation and it looks like there are zero photos. Here is how it looks now. I think I might know why there are none- that place was in a terrible part of town. So many friends/bands/etc have stories of being robbed and cars being broken into. Legendary club in a terrible part of town.
Here is Kevin Haynes’ recording of Butterglory when they played there in 1994. It’s pretty raw sounding, but that’s how the club was.
