Los Sindes- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 Schoeps Audio Master

Here’s another one from last Friday’s show at the Cafe. I was not prepared for this band- they were so good, and they sound like no one else in Sacramento- alternative/jangly new wavish type stuff with some of that early cult/killing joke guitar chorus at times. I like it!
Sorry about the fluctuations in quality. I was getting video cameras prepped so I had to duck down to get stuff out of my bag. I now know that the soundboard enclosure makes a ton of vibration noise.
I would definitely go see this band again.

Michael Dean Damron- Claimstake Brewing, Rancho Cordova, Ca 7/6/23 Schoeps digital master audience

I was planning on posting from another collection today, but we got heartbreaking news about Michael Dean Damron. Most recently, Michael was a solo artist who toured extensively- he played a show here in July of 2023 with Micah Schnabel and Vanessa Jean Speckman. He was also in the alt country band I Can Lick any Sonofabitch in the house from 2002-2013.

Michael passed away today from liver cancer. I was friends with him on facebook but I never got to see him perform, but I kept hearing about how great the shows were and how I should get out to one. Always go to the show, folks.

Thankfully, Anonymous was at his last show here in the Sacramento area. This is a phenomenal recording and performance. Thanks.

I will also post a link to his gofundme. I know he has a daughter, as she was helping her dad while in the hospital.
For folks in Portland, there is a benefit concert this Saturday (May 10) at Star Theater.
For folks outside of Portland, there are a couple of fundraisers that I will paste in facebook comments below

The Snares- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 6/24/23 Schoeps Audio Master Incomplete

I had a busy day on Saturday and got to this show late. What happened to shows that started at 9pm and went until 2am? These early starts are killing me. OK, enough complaining.
I walk into Harlows and the 2nd band is already playing. They are kicking ass. I then see Matt K. Shrugg on drums and realized I have totally f*cked up by missing part of this set. D’oh. It sounded like they were close to finishing (and I didn’t have permission to film), so I didn’t pull out the camera.. but I did start up the schoeps mics and I got about 20 min of the set. You will hear some nuances in quality as I move around the club.
So bummed I missed filming them.

Urethane- Old Ironsides Sacramento Ca 6/3/23 Schoeps Audio Master Incomplete Steve Caballero Faction

Another story for you all, this time for mediocre Monday. As you can see, this post is only 3 minutes and 48 seconds long. Why?
Well, it’s kind of a long story. First, I had planned to get there early and do multicamera video of Urethane (featuring Steve Caballero of the Faction) and Good Riddance. But, I wasn’t feeling very well (something I ate) and I was debating whether I should go at all… and then my daughter asked me to play soccer with her and she blasted me with the ball straight into my nuts, which put me down for the count for a bit longer. She is 12, 100lbs of muscle and in competitive soccer fyi.
I finally leave from home in Orangevale and go down hwy 50 to Mather Field (about 15-20min away) and realize that I don’t have my preamp for the mics. I must turn back.
I finally get to Old I and I find a spot to park right out front! I get in the club and Urethane is almost finished with their set. The place is also packed, so this is recorded from the very back of the main room. Rest assured that the Good Riddance video will sound way better than this!
Totally bummed to miss urethane. How cool is it that 2 skate rock shows sold out in sac on the same night

G.B.H.- Cornerstone, Berkeley Ca 5/26/23 Schoeps audio 1st song and a half of show GBH

Here is that bonus post I promised- I had to cut out a bit of it where a guy complimented my Tank shirt and I had to tell him Algy Ward died. That happened twice.
Refer to the MDC post to understand why this is only 5min long and audio only.

Motorcycle- Golden Bear, Sacramento Ca. 5/11/23 4K UHD Video w/ Schoeps CCM 4 Mic audio

This set was a surprise. I saw Motorcycle’s first show ever, back in 2019 at the Blue Lamp. They have added quite a lot to their sound- Chris now uses pre-programmed keyboard (and even backing vocal?) tracks to really fill out the band’s sound. That can’t be easy to do in a small club when you can’t always hear what’s happening, so kudos to the band. I loved it and I hope to catch another show soon.
It looks like they had a slight change to their lineup- that’s definitely not Sarah Shintaku on drums- looks like it could be an unshaven Matt Mason. Not really sure.
Anyway, Motorcycle has some stuff on bandcamp- 5 releases with a total of 6 tracks.

Blizzard of Al- Golden Bear, Sacramento 5/11/23 Schoeps CCM4 Audio Master incomplete

Another bonus post. I had family stuff until 8:30 last night so I got to the Golden Bear as quickly as I could, but missed almost all of Blizzard of Al’s set.. which is unfortunate because what I heard was really good. Damn. This is the debut of the new(to me) Schoeps CCM4 microphone setup that I got last week. Man, do they sound good. Thanks to Keith Kreider for selling them to me- love them already.
By the way, you might hear me talking at the start of this. Someone kindly told me that I had a tag hanging off of my hat and since I am socially awkward, I had to tell him the entire story of WHY it was there. Anyway, the hat is a keeper and the tag is coming off.

Park Street Riot- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 3/24/23 Multitrack soundboard Audio mix

I am finally making some progress with these multitrack mixes. HUGE shout out to Patrick Hills for his help in getting my laptop set up to mix these.. and he even made it idiot-proof enough that I can use! We overcame one final tech obstacle over the weekend and I have been mixing/processing ever since. It’s pretty fun!
Remember that local band Park Street Riot whose video I posted on Friday? Well, here is the multitrack audio for that same show. I seem to be missing one mic (backing vocal), but I am still happy with the result. Expect a bunch of new multicam videos to be posted soon- the edit work has been done for a while, we were waiting for this audio!
I am still learning, so these should get better over time. I already realize that I have the bass up too high and guitars a little low here. Live and learn.

Dead Kennedys- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 5/24/85 xfer from 2nd gen soundboard cassette

Happy Friday everyone! I don’t have any video to share today, but here is the best version of this well-circulated tape I have ever seen. James thinks it is 2nd gen, and it sounds like it. I did EQ this because it was super heavy on high end and light on bass.

Oranger- Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco Ca 2/26/23 Digital Soundboard Master Rebal Peter Ellenby

Long old man rant warning!
Even with a google calendar tracking upcoming shows (after buying tickets to 3 shows on the same day a couple years back), I managed to buy tickets to 2 shows on the same day. I’m screwed! But then I realized that this show was a matinee and I could hit both.
I got to the club about 30min after doors and bands were not even setting up yet, but a ton of people showed up early to celebrate Peter which was really nice- it was like a high school reunion! I asked Dan for permission to video Oranger and Overwhelming Colorfast(he drummed for both bands) and got the ok. It was so crowded that it was hard for me to get set up. Bottom of the Hill is dark and I was turning into a trip hazard, all hunched down and getting cameras ready. So I went out to the car to get cards and batteries in cameras, cameras in mounts, etc. While I was out there, I hear noise from the club. It must be the opener.
So I get into the club and the band(who I thought was Kingdom First) was GREAT- great power pop with catchy keyboard melodies. They are well into their set so I plug the A10 in to the board and hit record, but keep the cameras in the bag since it was dark and packed.
Well, the band playing was Oranger and I totally blew it by not getting video. At least the board mix was good enough to rebalance- this sounds great! Thanks to the band for permission and sorry about the miss. Total rookie move. I DID get the rest of the bands on video.
