Negative Approach- Mohawk, Austin Tx. 9/5/22 5camera 4k Multicam with Matrix audio

About a month ago, I followed the end of the Circle Jerks/7 Seconds/Negative Approach tour through all 5 dates in Texas. Man, that was a lot of driving. Texas is huge. It was totally worth it- everyone that worked for the bands and venues were cool. It was a blast.
Anyway, here is the first multicam edit from that run of shows. The Mohawk in Austin was by far the best venue of the tour in my opinion- everyone who works there was super nice. It was really great for video as well. Since Negative Approach started their set during daylight hours, the quality is even better than usual. The audio turned out great with the help of Jim McLain’s mix of 3 different sources. Tromster clearly put a lot of effort into the edits- thanks my friend. Thanks to the bands and venues for allowing me to do this. Now, if someone can share this with John Brannon, that would be cool. I don’t know how to contact him.

7 Seconds- White Oak Music Hall, Houston Tx 9/3/22 4K UHD Multicamera with Matrix Audio Hardcore

TLDR: Guitar comes in soon- give it a minute!
Wow, I am kinda shocked as to how well this one came out. Like I mentioned in other posts, EVERYTHING went wrong on this one. Getting to Houston was a nightmare- there was a monsoon-like storm and there was no visibility on the freeway. I get there late during soundcheck and the venue is very nice– the nicest one of the tour and the staff was nice. I lost my camera pole mount in either Dallas or San Antonio and did not realize it until I looked in my bag to use it here. So, I tried strapping the monopod to a post with bungee cords which caused too much vibration to use.
Then, early in the set, my gopro on Bobby freezes up. That has never happened before. So, this 4 camera video changes to 3. That issue caused me to panic-buy another gopro in Austin and relegate this one to backup status. Plus, my GH5S camerawork is super shaky because I was holding it by hand and my bionically repaired right shoulder was not having it.
So, like I said, it has no business being this good. Thanks to Agelos (Tromster) for saving the day.

Circle Jerks- White Oak Music Hall, Houston Tx 9/3/22 Audio Only DPA4061 Mics

Oh man, work is getting like it was a couple years ago- 8.5 hours of meetings today- 5 hours down so far. It’s going to make these daily posts challenging… and of course, when I need to create posts as quickly as possible, Youtube decides to stop processing my audio posts. After having this one bonk out about 5 times, I finally had to do it the old/hard way. I guess I’ll be working with YT tech support soon.
Anyway, here is the audio from the Circle Jerks Houston show. Video was not allowed, so I went ahead and used the ol’ DPA mics to get this one. This was the nicest venue of the tour and a sharp contrast from the (awesome) warehouse style San Antonio club. Meh, give me $7 beers and roll up doors over this fancy place and $15 beers. Anyway, it sounds pretty good because of the pristine sound system. I guess there are some benefits from going to a nice venue…

Negative Approach- White Oak Music Hall, Houston Tx. 9/3/22 4K UHD Multicam with Soundboard Audio

This is the last Negative Approach show to post from the September Texas tour, and the last one from the ill-fated White Oak Music Hall show… but this was definitely the best video of the night. We were able to use the G50 “monopod strapped to a pole” goofy setup that I improvised, at least. That angle was still lousy- loses focus and vibrates a little but still gives some decent shots… sometimes.
Forward to 2min if you don’t want to hear the “Popcorn” theme that NA used as intro music to each show. That was my cue to get my ass in gear, btw.

7 Seconds- Paper Tiger, San Antonio Tx. 9/2/22 4K UHD Multicamera with soundboard audio

Here is the 2nd date of the Circle Jerks/7 Seconds/Negative Approach Texas tour. The first date was in Dallas- I was staying in a semi-crappy hotel north of Dallas by the airport and I worked until noon. Then, I had to make the ~300 mile drive south to San Antonio. It was the Friday before Labor Day weekend, so traffic was heavy. I had to take a bunch of country roads to make up time, but I drove straight to the club and walked in during 7 Seconds’ soundcheck.

I really liked the venue- the Paper Tiger is an industrial/warehouse looking place and they roll up the side doors so you can see the show from the outside patio. I probably should have filmed Negative Approach, but I was pretty fried from the drive. This was the smallest venue of the Texas run and the crowd was the most active and was singing along/moving constantly for 7 Seconds’ set.
The only downside is the audio- My DPA mics were so bassy/muddy that they were not much use, so I took the raw soundboard and tried to rebalance it.. but it has this odd high end flutter which bugs the hell out of me, but stick with it, you’ll get used to it.

7 Seconds- Paper Tiger, San Antonio Tx. 9/2/22 4K UHD Gopro 9min Sample Circle Jerks tour

I am in Texas, filming every 7 Seconds show of the Circle Jerks/7 Seconds and Negative Approach tour there. I don’t usually put up show fragments, but I only have my work laptop so I can’t bring the entire angle together. Don’t have the tools. I saw that Kev did not live stream and this was the best crowd I had seen of the tour so far, so I figured I’d give a taste. I did 4 angles that will be edited together soon. Fwd to 4:50 to see the crowd go nuts during “Young ’til I die” and even 99 red baloons!
I also put it up because the Westin tried to argue with me about how internet works… so I clogged up their hotel internet with this 5gb file. Man, I hate bougie hotels. At least the bed was nice, I was exhausted.
Anyway, thanks to Kev and the band for always being so nice to me and my camera (s).. for over 30 years. Always being cool even when a lot of others weren’t.
Edits coming soon so subscribe if you want to see them.

7 Seconds- Granada Theater, Dallas Tx. 9/1/22 4K UHD Multicam with SB Matrix audio

Aww, here is the very last video to post from that Texas tour in September. That was a lot of driving, but a lot of fun as well. I still have a few audio only recordings to share from that run, but this is it for video.
Like I mentioned before, this was a tough room- it was an old theater with pretty rough sound, plus the balcony vibrated so badly that one of my angles was useless. Huge thanks to Jack Pier for the camera help or I would have been toast. This one turned out a lot better than the Circle Jerks’ set, especially audio.

Negative Approach- Granada Theater, Dallas Tx. 9/1/22 4K UHD with SB Matrix audio full show

The first night of the 7 Seconds/Circle Jerks tour was a tough one to shoot. I mentioned on the Circle Jerks post that the venue was very old and the sound was not great- very boomy and the board mix was brickwalled.. nothing sounded good. Camera angles had vibration issues. Ugh.
So that’s why this Negative Approach is only 1 camera. Both balcony angles (Jack Pier’s and mine) suffered from vibration issues. The only one that was salvageable was my GH5S angle. So, if you wonder why I stay zoomed in on the drummer, or on John for too long, it was because this was supposed to be the closeup/isolation angle out of 3.

Circle Jerks- Granada Theater, Dallas Tx. 9/1/22 4K UHD Multicam with SB Matrix audio

Aw, I failed on my promise for an all-Jess video weekend. There is 1 more Slobberbone video that I shot that will be posted as soon as we get it finished up. Sorry.
Here is the only Circle Jerks video that I was able to shoot during my week-long tour of texas with them, 7 Seconds and Negative Approach. Huge thanks to Dmitri Coats for permission. As usual, things went wrong. The audio is not great- this is the same equipment that gave us the killer Mohawk Austin audio soundtrack, but this was an large older theater and the sound was decent in the room, but not great. Big thanks to Jim McLain for making it sound as good as possible.
Also, I did not realize that the drums were going to be wheeled closer to the front of the stage. I set up my gopro early and got out of there, then the drums moved. So, no gopro camera.
Overall, it still turned out pretty decent. Another huge thanks to Jack Pier- if it wasn’t for his angle on the balcony, we would have been toast. My tripod encountered a ton of vibration.
