The Offspring- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/9/21 4K UHD Live w/DPA Audio

I wasn’t planning on recording the Offspring’s set, but I was scouting out the best place to do the Misfits set so I ended up getting about 15min while I was testing the shot. This was shot from the VIP Section, facing the Kolas stage. On the map, they make it look like there is this big, close viewing area for VIP’ers. In reality, there is a 12′ wide barrier that we could view from, and it was super far away. Glad I moved out of VIP, closer to the stage before the Misfits set.

Body Count- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/9/21 Enhanced 4K Live Ice-T Slayer

I arrived at Aftershock super late on Saturday, as my daughter had a soccer game and I am a coach on the team. In fact, I thought I was going to miss them but I hauled ass from Placerville to the Sleep Train Arena parking, and I got lucky to get on a bus right away. I walked up right when they were starting. No DPA audio- it was such a rush that I did not have time to get my audio stuff all ready.
Of course I would figure out a good place to film at the dreaded coors light stage during the last band I filmed there. Oh well.
Features Dave Lombardo from Slayer on drums for a couple minutes at the start. He slid in there all secret- you didn’t know what you were seeing until it was over.

The Original Misfits- Aftershock Festival, Sacramento Ca 10/9/21 4K UHD Complete w DPA Audio Danzig

frenchonionshoupandkittylitter check in once again with a nice Misfits video. There seems to be some discord in Misfits land- Glenn drops the mic and walks off stage at the 4-5 minute mark, Jerry Only smashes his bass in apparent frustration, and Danzig’s intro of the band is hilariously callous. Oh well, glad FOSAKL got nice video.

The Misfits- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/9/21 Audio Only DPA4061 Mics

Sac music archive correspondent “frenchonionsoupandkittylitter” checks in with a post for today:
So the Misfits played Aftershock on Saturday- this was the second time that I got to see them by accident- I had bought tickets to the fest already when MCR cancelled and they were named as the Saturday headliner. So lucky.
The show was the typical Misfits set. I don’t know what happened, but Glenn threw the mic down early in the set and walked off the stage, then came back on immediately. Jerry Only smashed his bass in apparent frustration as well. I guess things aren’t all sunshine and rainbows in Misfits Land, even with all of that shared Festival and Hot Topic merch money!
The mix starts out a little bass heavy but balances out about 10-15min in.
The picture is during their setup for the set- one of the evil pumpkins took a little tumble.
Video forthcoming- it took too long to upload overnight so I had to kill the job. Probably video this weekend or so.
Thanks, FOSAKL!

Rancid- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca. 10/8/21 Live 4K Enhanced w/ DPA 4061 Mic audio

After getting crushed at Suicidal, I shot over to Rancid at the main stage. I thought I was going to miss the beginning of their set, but I got there pretty close to the start. You can really hear how lame the sound is in VIP on this recording- these are the same mics used for Exodus, Anthrax, Misfits etc and they all sound great. This one is messy.
Not trying to bag on the band, but when I was thinking back on the 4 days, I was listing all of the bands I saw off the top of my head and this one did not even register– nothing stood out. They were good, and this is the obvious “greatest hits fest set”, but I just didn’t remember it at all. I had seen them somewhat recently so maybe that was it.

Metallica- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/8/21 4K UHD Full show with improved audio!

Time for an experiment. I was plonked with 2 copyright strikes on the same day back in early January, due to my posting of some of my own footage of Metallica’s 50th anniversary shows at the chase center. I have posted Metallica content in the past with no issue at all- they claim copyright and take revenue, and I don’t care :-). With the Chase center shows, it appeared that Amazon/Coda Collection did the plonking (they live streamed the shows), not Metallica. I took almost all of my videos down to unlisted for 3 months as a result, with the only way to access via the http://www.sacramentomusicarchive.com website. It kinda sucked.
So, this one is a test to see if the copyright cops come down hard on me. There is more to share if this works out.

Metallica- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/8/21 Full Set 4k Live DPA Audio

Here’s the last aftershock post for a while. I bought the live metallica audio recordings to synch with the video, but it isn’t working. I think Metallica’s people may be fixing mistakes in post production…
The workflow for these enhanced ones is insane. I need to take each of the 9 pieces of the show (camera films 15min max) and enhance/degrain each one. Each piece takes 3-4 hours. Then I take the enhanced pieces and synch them up to the DPA audio source via pluraleyes, which I also need to prep/EQ. Then, I join then up in avidemux for the final, 70gb file I upload. It takes about 40hrs of processing time and 8 hours of upload time to get it to you. Not complaining, just explaining how many steps it takes. And since youtube always favors speed over quality, this will get 10% of the views of my original, unenhanced, raw camera audio version of the show. No big.

Suicidal Tendencies- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca. 10/8/21 4K Live DPA Mics

After Dropkick Murphys, I hauled ass over to the Coors Light stage and Suicidal started right when I was walking up. The stage was packed and there was nowhere to go- I cut my way through the crowd until I found a pocket of space in front of the soundboard. It was still totally chaotic- hands in the air constantly and people were going nuts.
If you don’t watch this entire thing, I encourage you to forward the video to about the 32:30 mark and watch the insanity during “cyco Vision”. That pit pushed me from my spot and I was crushed up against a big guy who asked me to move. Since there was nowhere to go and the Rancid set was due to start, I just bailed.
Oh, one last thing- You will notice a big drop in quality from about 25min to 32min. I could not get pluraleyes to synch the DPA audio to the video. When I synched it manually, the program I use to join all these fragments took a dump. After screwing around with it for days, I’m just leaving it like this. If anyone want to see Subliminal with better audio, I’ll post it.

Dropkick Murphys- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/8/21 Live 4k w/ DPA Audio

I left work early on Friday so I could get to Aftershock in time to see these guys. I have been a fan for over 20 years but never seen them live. It was only okay. It seems that the main stage daytime sets suffered a bit- there wasn’t much energy with most bands I saw there and the sound was TERRIBLE in the VIP section. I thought about going into GA but saw the sea of people there and thought “screw that”. Maybe it was due to the sun being right in their eyes for the entire set.
Also, I had glare on my screen so I couldn’t tell if everything was in perfect focus or not. I correct it a few minutes in, but another annoyance.

Metallica- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca. 10/8/21 4K UHD Live Panasonic Lumix

I went to the Aftershock fest for the first time and boy was it tiring! This one came out pretty nice- I was trying to hold the camera steady (it’s like practicing yoga.. for hours) and my back was getting pretty fatigued toward the end and you can tell- I get a little shaky with the camera. I was only 1 row back on the barrier of the VIP section, but there were 2 very excited fans in front of me who were waving their hands around A LOT- that explains why you see a bunch of dark shadows across the screen at times.
But, I’m nitpicking. It’s pretty ok for a massive festival video with a bazillion people there.
