Victims Family- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 10/13/89 xfer from master Video Tape + Master Soundboard P1

This one is a bit of a long story. TL/DR version: Part 1 is today, full audio show is tomorrow, part 2 of video is Monday. Video will not be the full show. Audio/video synch starts at about 30 seconds in, and seems to align better after a short while

When I had the ancient Aiwa CV-80 camera from 1988-1992, I used an external microphone so the audio would be decent quality. It was a Sony ECM-909 mic, which required it to be plugged into the camera AND powered on. The old cameras had no audio levels, so if you screwed up and left it unplugged or forgot to power it on, you got silent video and did not realize until the show was over. My 2 biggest screwups were this show (the best show I have ever seen VF play) and Pavement at the Kennel Club in May of 1992. No audio has ever surfaced of the Pavement, but I did tape a nice soundboard of this show.

Massive thanks to Jesse Davis for synching the first 16min of SILENT footage of the show to the soundboard recording. Not easy. It falls out of synch after that, so 17min-45ish min of the set’s video won’t be posted. The final 25ish min will (hopefully) be posted Monday, if pluraleyes can make it happen.

Victims Family- 924 Gilman 10/13/89 xfer from Master Soundboard Cassette Enhanced

So here is the VF full show audio I promised. This was probably the best VF show I had ever seen. Amazing set with brand new “White Bread Blues” songs, including an instrumental version of “Anti satan song for mom”!

PS: There were shockingly few VF images on the internets. I had to chop this one from my Gilman flyer archive for a different show :-O

Victims Family- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 10/13/89 Enhanced with Soundboard audio! End of Show only

Here is the end of the show that I had promised earlier in the week.
So, in summary, you get:

  • 1st 15min of set of what was silent video synched with soundboard audio (posted Sunday)
  • Entire show, audio only (posted.. tuesday?)
  • and now this- final 20-25min. This part is my favorite part of the show. First George Benson, then Friends with a broken bass string which turns into a dub version… then a super long break where Ralph entertains us all by doing metal screams & guitar that sounds exactly like the scream… then onto “anti satan song for mom” with no vocals. Even though it was midnight and they had to dick around with the bass guitar no one left.

Victims Family- Cotati Cabaret, Cotati Ca 5/24/89 Enhanced w/ Sony ECM 909 audio

Since Tim Soylan asked for it, here is an enhanced, complete version of Victims Family at Cotati Cabaret. I had hoped to synch my friend’s superior Sony D6 audio recording to this, but pluraleyes can’t read the stage audio well enough to match it up. That app drives me crazy sometimes. I will try to get my synch friend to do this one when he gets time. Anyway, you were right Tim- I see you playing during backward/forward at the 42 min mark.
I checked the sacramentomusicarchive.com site to see if we had enhanced this one before, and check out this week-plus span of shows:
5/20/89: Fugazi at Gilman
5/24/89: Victims Family and Short Dogs Grow at Cotati Cabaret
5/27/89: Neurosis and 7 Seconds at Gilman
5/28/89: Operation Ivy’s last show at Gilman
5/29/89: Death Angel at Cattle Club.
Holy shit, what an amazing run.

Victims Family- Cotati Cabaret, Cotati Ca. 5/24/89 Enhanced with NEW Sony D6 Audio Source

I know this is the 3rd time posting this show, but this is definitely the best (and last) version. My good friend Anonymous was audiotaping with his Sony D6 from a good spot in the room, which is way better than my stage camera audio, which only has a little vocal (just monitor volume).
Thanks to King Bean for the synch.
This is a cool, rare show with Eric Strand on drums, plus VF drummer-to-be Tim Soylan playing on at least 1 song.

Victims Family- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 8/20/88 xfer from 8mm master enhanced w/Soundboard Audio

I am so happy we could finally get this show synched up. I first saw Victim’s Family in July of 1988 and became a fan pretty much on the spot. This show was the first one I saw after buying the albums, and it is one of those early shows where they had a horn section on certain songs. This is probably my favorite “early” show by them. Soundboard mix is great as well.
One issue is the lighting- it is super dark until about 7:00 in, then stage lights are turned on.
Huge thanks to king bean for the synch. It slips a little out of synch at 14ish min, but realigns shortly after

Victims Family- Danceteria, Sacramento Ca. 7/3/88 xfer from master tape!

I went to this show to see Corrupted Morals- I had never heard VF before. They blew me away- they were so different than anything else I had heard before. Over the nest year, they became one of my favorite bands and still are today. The audio is not so good on this one- I was still using the stock microphone on the Aiwa CV80 and Ralph’s guitar sound + that mic= bad news. Great show.
