Slayer- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/31/84 audience recording xfer from master cassette thrash metal

It’s tour manager Doug Tuesday! I have a migraine and the meds are making it hard to hold up my head, so I’ll make this quick. There is a well-circulated board tape from this same date, but that setlist seems to be incomplete. This show opens with Chemical Warfare, then Aggressive Perfector/Face the Slayer etc. I guess this is the complete show while the board tape is partial.

Possessed- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/28/84 Audio xfer from 1st gen cassette

This show is shockingly well-documented. There is a mediocre quality video up on youtube that is a different source than this (this sounds better to my ears). If any industrious nerd wants to synch this audio to a CLEAN copy of the video (which I do not have, I don’t think), I can send you the wav file.
This one come from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection and was recorded by “Tour Manager Doug”. I was listening to the tape and really enjoying it… then, close to the end, you can hear Doug loudly express his distaste for Possessed, then he shuts off the deck mid-song and goes outside. I found that hilarious. You then get some fun talk with people (including Andy Andersen) outside of Ruthie’s. Truly a classic recording. Thanks Doug!

Exodus- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/28/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal MITFR Baloff

This one is just perfect. The quality is very good- nice and clean which allowed for a good EQ. The era is probably my all-time favorite — a nice mix of BBB and the demo era of songs. You get BBB songs, plus Hell’s Breath, Death Row, and Impaler. And probably best of all- Baloff is absolutely ON FIRE and hilarious. Referring to break dancing (which he apparently hated): “they can flip around in my toilet”. WHAT? Man, imagine Baloff on stage today- he would be a one man controversy machine.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! And another Slayer show from Ruthie’s.
Man, it kills me to see all of these Slayer shows that I could have attended… I did not know they were happening. Back in the 80s, if you weren’t going to the club on a regular basis, you wouldn’t know what was playing there. There was very little advertisement outside of the club. Same with Gilman and a bunch of others. Steve Koepke’s The List solved that “knowing about shows” problem, but he did not start until 1990. Before that, it was hit and miss.
This one might be less circulated than other Slayer Ruthies shows- they are usually well-documented on setlist dot fm, but not this one.

Back to Doug’s collection for Monday. I always find Exodus very motivating when I have the morning or Monday blahs. This is another one of those killer pre-Bonded by Blood shows that has them playing most of the forthcoming album along with a few earlier songs. Along with almost all of BBB, you get Hell’s Breath, Death Row and Die By His Hand. This has to be one of the last times that DBHH is played. They pretty much quit performing it after part of it was pilfered for the bridge in Creeping Death.

Well shoot. I was going to post a tape from Arica Pelino’s collection today, but I just found that Eggplant had posted the tape a few years back. There goes that plan. Let’s do another Tour Manager Doug tape instead.
Here is a Vicious Rumours set from a show they played with Exodus back before their debut album. It sounds pretty nice for the time- little to no (unwanted) distortion at all. Thanks Doug!

Let’s make today a two-for-tourmanagerdoug-thursday!
First off is a short soundcheck from Slayer’s well-circulated Ruthie’s inn show. I don’t think I have ever seen this one around, but the board tape has been pressed onto vinyl by bootleggers. If you would stop buying those, bootlegs would stop. Just saying. Supply/demand and all.
This one is short and was less tinny than most TM Doug tapes, hence the “master or low gen” designation. Probably a master, knowing Doug.

Man, historically craptacular work day today. Damn. Like, never-seen-before bad. Sobering.
Anyway, here is the 2nd of the two-for-tourmanagerdoug-thursday posts. There are a bunch of posts online which claim to be Ruthie’s 3/17/84, but none of them have the same setlist or sound. I tend to believe Doug’s tapes since he was there.
This mix was not great- I ran it through Izotope and boosted the guitar and bass A LOT and it is listenable. Lots of dead space between main set and encore, then more dead space until Tom tells the crowd that they blew a fuse and it is time to go home. Haha!
