Stone Vengeance- Rehearsal Demo 1985 xfer from official release(?) Speed Thrash Metal Bay Area MITFR

I have been having some trouble with the On This Day in History content this week, so it is coming later today.
Here is one that I was planning on posting yesterday, but Wayne got Metallingus for his birthday instead (what a sentence!).
Stone Vengeance was one of those really great bands that were in that early east bay thrash scene, but never enjoyed the success of some of their peers. Formed in 1978, they were one of the first (possibly THE first) African American trash metal bands. They came back and played a few shows and released a 2x-CD retrospective about 15 years ago and it looks like they just played a show a couple months ago. Nice to see.
It looks like some of the recordings here might have been released later on- either through the Double CD thing I mentioned, or on early demos… but I don’t see the last 2 versions released on anything else. You should listen regardless- the band absolutely rips and huge thanks to Chris Eng for preserving these tapes for us to hear.

Part Time Christians- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 11/1/85 xfer from master audio tape

It looks like I inadvertently made this Ruthie’s week. Here’s another show that Wayne taped from Ruthie’s. Part Time Christians released one LP on Alternative Tentacles in 1984 and then disappeared. Checking youtube, there is not much out there beside the LP. Recording is good quality for the time frame and equipment used. I left the post show clowning around on there- it’s short but ridiculous.

One more Wayne Vanderkuil creation this week- then KALX audio tomorrow and 4 videos for the long weekend.
This one has been confirmed to really be a master recording – he knew about them from pretty much day 1 and he was there for so many of their shows. Thanks so much Wayne.
I have not found the CJ/NM sets in the box yet. I’ll keep digging….

Violent Coercion- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 10/26/85 xfer from master cassette Neurosis

As promised, more goodness from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. Here is what Aaron Cometbus said about VC: “Three members of Violent Coercion went on to form Neurosis, the fourth drew the cover of the first Neurosis LP, and the fifth ended up in Samiam. Talk about an all-star cast.”
With that said, this recording does sound very much like an early punk show, recorded with non-professional equipment. Still will be of interest to a few friends here… including the guys in the current iteration of Violent Coercion. They are back and playing out, so go see them while you can!

Suicidal Tendencies- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 10/12/85 xfer from master audio cassette

Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection delivers the goods again! This one sounds pretty decent for a non-pro recording from 1985. I EQ’d it do bring the mids down and bass up, but it was clean enough to make sound ok. Wow!
I’ve got the Beowulf tape on my desk, so I’ll get that one done soonish

Beowulf- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca. 10/12/85 xfer from master tape Suicidal Records Thrash Metal

Alright, more historically significant master tapes from Wayne Vanderkuil. This is from the legendary show at Ruthie’s where the entire Venice/Suicidal scene seemed to have converged on berkeley to play a show. This sounds pretty damned good for an early audio recording.
I also learned that Beowulf is back together and they seem to have a million active mambers.

D.R.I.- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca. 9/20/85 xfer from low gen cassette Audio Only

Here is a really cool show from Eric Mcintire’s archive. I went over to his house and borrowed about 30 tapes, then the Nak Dragon died right when I got them home. Sounds pretty good for a 1985 punk tape. I wonder if this is one of Verne Inhel’s pro walkman recordings… anyway, huge thanks to Eric for letting me borrow these tapes.
This is my favorite era of DRI, and within a month of when I saw them for the first time. That was a life changing show.

D.R.I.- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca. 7/14/85 Audio Soundboard xfer from low gen tape remastered

This is going to be a TL/DR. Sorry.
Josh Pappe passed away. I did not know him well, but I met him a few times and partied with him at the infamous Discharge Club Can’t Tell show. He was a nice guy. My friend Matt Polish was friends with him. He was the bass player responsible for my favorite D.R.I. era.
A lot of punk musicians/fans my age have been hit with health problems lately, with Reed and now Josh passing away. It makes me think about my own mortality and my place in life now, especially since I didn’t take great care of myself in my teenage years. Hoping I am around for a while for my kids, especially the 9 and 4 year old.
On to the details about the recording. This comes from Eric Mcintire’s collection- thanks for trusting me with the tapes. I worked on this for about an hour in Izotope RX to boost guitar/bass/drums and to remove hiss. Eric, that’s why it is taking me so long! If you all heard the original version, you would be shocked at the difference.
Izotope RX is an unbelievable tool- it takes audio and allows you to rebalance the instruments. I can’t believe something like this exists, and now I am going to be busy for YEARS remixing my old DAT soundboards. Haha.

Suicidal Tendencies- Ruthies Inn, Berkeley Ca. 1985 xfer from low gen audio cassette REPOST

I made a mistake yesterday- I assumed that suicidal only played Ruthie’s once. They played at least 3 times. After some detective work, we think that the suicidal show I posted yesterday as 4/18/86 is probably 2/15/85. Dan Hague already posted 4/18/86 from Chris Dodge’s collection and it is a different show. This setlist leans heavily toward the 1st LP, and someone yells “play some possessed” repeatedly at about the 33min mark. Possessed opened the 2/15/85 show, and the ST song “Possessed to Skate” was written, but it seems to have different lyrics/different name. So, 90% sure it is 2/15/85.
