Galaxy Trio- 1201 Club, Portland Or. 1994 xfer from 8mm master tape Enhanced Space Surf Rock

Since a lot of people will be watching the pregame at the time that I usually post, here’s an early one today. This may be the very last one from Craig Babb’s collection. It took a couple years for me to digitize and post. Thanks Craig for your patience- it was a fun project!
This one is short so you can substitute it for whatever the SB halftime show is this year.

Galaxy Trio- La Luna, Portland Or 1994 or 1996 xfer from master video tape Enhanced Space Surf Rock

Here is a nice quality video from Craig Babb’s collection- Galaxy Trio, opening for Dick Dale at La Luna in Portland Or. We don’t know the exact date, Craig thinks it is from around 1995.. and a quick setlist.fm and concert poster search shows that he played there in 1994 and 1996. Please let me know if you know which show Galaxy Trio opened.

Snow Bud and the Flower People- Satyricon, Portland OR 1994 xfer from master video Chris Newman

Here is another amazing video from Craig Babb’s collection. I totally missed the boat on this band, so this was a really cool video to transfer. I jumped on discogs to pick up some of their releases and just about everything is out of print and expensive. Excellent psych rock.

Jesus Lizard- Satyricon, Portland OR 11/8/92 xfer from master videotape Enhanced

Here’s another awesome video from Craig Babb’s collection of masters- a Jesus Lizard set from 1992. The audio is heavily distorted- if anyone has a lead on good audio, let me know so we can get this synched up. I have 2 JL audio shows from Satyricon in June of 91/June of 92 but not this one.

Econochrist- Hand Gallery, Portland, Or 11/30/91 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Punk Very Small Records

Today’s On This Date in History comes from Jason Ross’ collection. It was labeled as “Portland 11/30/91” and looked like it took place in a DIY space. I figured I didn’t have a remote chance of finding out the venue, but a newspapers dot com search came up with the listing. Kudos to the Oregonian- they were the paper that ALWAYS had the inside info on my former tech employer before it was made public too. Haha.

The reason that you are seeing so many Jason Ross videos for the OTD project is because I received his collection early on, and took every master and 1st gen tape that I could find and digitized it. I honestly do not recall doing this many of his tapes- always a nice surprise to come across stuff like this.

UPDATE- master was located and it’s slightly better quality, so I am pointing you there

Helios Creed- Portland, Or. Mid-1990’s? xfer from 8mm master tape enhanced

I am working on transferring a bunch of Gilman DATs, so expect not much audio and a bunch of northwest video from Craig Babb’s collection coming up!
Here’s the first one. This thing was so dark- I cranked up the brightness, contrast and exposure and it is still dark. Not much Helios stuff out there though.

Meat Puppets- Pine Street Theater, Portland Or 12/14/88 xfer f/3rd gen 4 track soundboard cassette

Finally, today’s On This Date in History. This one was not quite as good as I remembered. Recording a multitrack mix live is a big challenge- I did it quite a bit in the late 90s and early 00’s. It is easy to peak channels without realizing it, especially if the band is loud in the club. It’s not bad, it’s just not as fantastic as I recall.

I was surprised that this wasn’t out there on YT or live music archive- taper friendly band. I guess this 3rd gen cassette will need to do.

Slayer- Rock Palace, Portland Or 6/30/84 xfer from master cassette tape Thrash

Doug joined the band on their first tour of the northwest in June of 84. Along with taping the shows, he took some amazing photos that are being added to the Sacramento Music Archive website today. So, if you only subscribe to the youtube channel, you might want to hop over to the website and sign up for updates there.
On to this tape. This one cleaned up real nice. I was able to EQ the excessive high end out of it and boost bass/mids, then pop it into Izotope Rx8 and bring up vocals and bass guitar. Sounds alright!

Metal Church- Rock Palace, Portland OR 6/30/84 xfer from master audio cassette Slayer Mace

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! It’s doesn’t feel like a Tuesday with so many people off for the holiday yesterday, including my kids. Not much time in the studio lately. Anyway, this one suffered from some high end distortion. I did my best to pull as much as distortion as possible out while boosting bass. I think it is uncirculated, so it has that going for it.
