I had planned to go see one of my favorite regional punk bands Civil War Rust last night, but my son had stomach flu so I stayed close to home. I am cursed to never see CWR. Zoran had invited me to film the show so I headed over to Boardwalk for their opening set. The BW is only 5min from my house so I could do that safely. They were very good- I had not heard them before. Very lively/funky metal(but not the crappy funk metal) with great guitar playing. Plus, you get Zoran’s Iron Serbian outfit as a bonus. It was a good thing that I did not go to CWR because I was sick as a dog last night, and still am today. We ALL have stomach flu now. Come on over and join in the fun! PS: I got there late and missed the first song. Stupid new parking rules at boardwalk.

OK kids, settle in. Gramps is going to go on for a bit.
Back in 2016, I went to Keith’s book signing at Dimple Records (R.I.P.) and asked if I could video their show at the Boardwalk that night. He referred me to the “documentary guys”. So I get to the club and find out that they are filming a mockumentary about OFF!, called Watermelon. At first, the crew was all “we think we have this handled. what kind of gear do you have”. I opened my camera backpack and they stared at the crazy guy with all this high end (at the time) gear. I got permission to film, provided that I hand them the footage for the movie. I sent it over to them in late 2016.
7 years go by and OFF! releases the Free LSD movie and breaks up. I assume that this is what the mockumentary became and that Watermelon was never going to be released. So I email the producer and no… they are still planning to release Watermelon and Free LSD was a different project entirely. They ask that I continue to hold back the footage, but I can post a few songs if I’d like.
So that brings us to today. Dean Crist asked for this one and Derek Clark was interested as well. This was back when I could pole mount cameras at the Boardwalk, haha. Anyway, the full show exists and I should be able to share once the movie is released.

Equipment used: I don’t remember all of it, but it definitely used Canon HF G30 and maybe a G50, along with gopro Hero 4 silver.
Audio was probably a matrix of the Rode Videomic Pro Stereo and soundboard

I wasn’t planning to post this one today, but the Metallica upload was blocked and even though the copyright-bot misidentified the source of the songs, I am not going to fight them about it.
Instead, here is another one from 2016 that I never posted for some reason. It might be due to the audio- that sounds like stock camera audio- I might have forgotten my mic. It still sounds ok.

Oh wow. Here is yet another 2016 master video I never got around to posting. I had no idea that Expire disbanded in 2017- they continued for exactly 6 months after this show and then called it quits.
Not sure why I didn’t multicam this one, but with the start of the show cutting in mid-song, I can probably guess that i was late to the show again. Also not sure why it has such a green hue- was that my doing or The Boardwalk’s? No idea. I did multicam them at Gilman in Feb of 2017, so you can check that one out as well. It’s on the website/channel.

Here are the Croissants opening for The Adolescents at the Boardwalk. Good, entertaining set. They have a single out now- check them out at a local venue.

I was happy to see that one of my all-time favorite bands was coming to town.. and to a club right next to my home. The soundboard mix and the sound in the club were less than stellar, but Jason was able to make it sound good with the matrixed audio. Thanks again to Agelos for the edit job- you did an excellent job! Lineage: Canon HFG10 (x2), HFG30, Soundboard audio, Schoeps MKIV.

A little background on my transfer setups: I have 3 PC’s for music work. One captures audio only (windows XP!), One captures VHS/8mm video/mini DV, and the other one is my main computer that does everything else.
So I am on the VHS transfer PC and I see a stray folder called “HFG10 Tripod”. Hmmm, that type of HD file isn’t supposed to be on that PC… it turns out that it was a second angle of this classic Croissants show, when they opened for the Adolescents 5 years ago! So we took the original G30 angle and edited it together with the nice sounding soundboard and this newly discovered G10.
Fun fact about this show- Tony and the rest of the Adolescents loved The Croissants’ set so much, that they had them open up BIG shows for them at the Observatory in orange county. How cool is that?

This one turned out pretty well, despite the issues I had. I overexposed one angle pretty bad, and the soundboard recording did not turn out (these new digital boards and their thumb drives are annoying!). Thanks to The Copyrights for allowing me to tape and to Agelos for the editing. Sorry the sound is so lame.. Filmed with 2 HFG10s on tripods and 1 HFG30 on monopod

Here’s local guys Bastards of Young with a set opening for Teenage Bottlerocket a few months back. Enjoy! Filmed with 1 HFG30 and 1 HFG10. Thanks to Agelos for the edit, and glad you liked them!
