Token Entry- Raw Interview Footage, NYC 7/15/89 xfer from master beta tape Russ Gibb Archive NYHC

Well here is something from way back- a Token Entry interview from 1989. Russ Gibb traveled to NYC to get this footage- you can see him getting things set up here.
Also on this tape (not posted here) is some random footage of NYC back in the late 80s along with some more interviews with people in the punk scene. Let me know if there is any interest in a post of that.
Also, the audio/video is slightly out of sync. It’s like that on the tape.

Russ Gibb NYC Street Footage July 1989 Lossless xfer from master beta tape

A youtube commenter asked for all of the raw Russ Gibb NYC Street footage from that Token Entry interview, so here is a rare non-musical post. It looks like it has some punk rockers in there, so we’ll call it good enough.
If you want an actual musical post, you can sign up for updates at sacramentomusicarchive.com — I am posting a super secret Roger Waters multicamera thing from Sacramento last month over there. Can’t access it anywhere else.

Joey Ramone- Interview on Howard Stern Show, NYC 1/12/89 xfer f/1st gen audio tape w/Lemmy Motorhead

Here’s something a little different for our LAST On This Date in History posts. Yup, this is the LAST ONE. I started the On This Date project last year on January 13 to see if I could post a show from this date in history for an entire year. Can’t believe it has been a year since I started this. The only date that I didn’t do was 2/29 since last year wasn’t a leap year, but I do have tapes from that date. I’ll make that one a Patreon Voter’s Choice for this week.

I plan to continue to post at least 2 things every day. I have decided to speed up the collections posts. It’s not really fair to the folks who have their tapes sitting here to only have something posted every month or so. This requires a lot more work on my end, so you will still see me pulling a disc from my collection on days when I am short on time. But expect 2 collections posts every single day from here on out!

Anyway, here is Joey plugging his all star jam show at The Ritz. Lemmy makes an appearance and Howard pokes fun at him. Classic.

Soul Asylum- CBGB, NYC 12/8/88 Audio Only xfer from 1st gen cassette tape

Here’s a post for John Moulton, Channing Lewis, Michael Crow, and Jersey Joe. Everyone is trying to figure out who the guest is playing the strat in this picture. My guess is Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo, but Dave calls out a special guest that is not intelligible. but is definitely not Ira. Can anyone solve the mystery of the mystery Strat guest?
I’ll be posting 12/7/88 tomorrow, lesser quality than this one.

Soul Asylum- CBGB, NYC 12/7/88 Audio Only xfer from 1st gen cassette tape

Soul Asylum played 2 nights at CBGB in December of 1988. This one doesn’t sound quite as good as the 12/8/88 show, but I mixed out as much distortion as I could. Again, this is for John Moulton, Channing Lewis, Michael Crow, and Jersey Joe. Everyone is trying to figure out who the guest is playing the strat in this picture. My guess is Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo, but Dave calls out a special guest that is not intelligible. but is definitely not Ira. Can anyone solve the mystery of the mystery Strat guest?
The pic is likely from 12/8/88, but I did not listen to 12/7 closely enough to hear if there are guests on this one as well.

Danzig- The Ritz, New York City 12/2/88 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette Samhain Misfits Complete

Here’s another one that the On This Date Project was able to dig out of the ocean of tapes over here- a complete set from Danzig, taken from a copy off George Norton’s master tape.

The tape isn’t without flaws. The first 6 minutes of the tape is badly damaged. If you can’t take the quality early on, forward to 6 minutes and issues resolve. Back in the days of 1980’s tape trading, we used some cheap tape decks to copy tapes. We would use high speed dubbing to get the job done quickly. Tape trading at the time was for fun so if a tape was sped up or damaged like this one, we wouldn’t think much of it. Now I wish I had asked george for a clean re-dub of this one. Dammit.

Great set with Misfits and Samhain “covers”.

Murphys Law- WNYU Crucial Chaos Interview & Live in Studio,New York City 3/17/88 xfer f/1st gen Tape

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so this one seemed appropriate for today’s On This day in History.
This set is somewhat legendary in NYHC circles, there are mentions of this Supertouch/Murphy’s Law multiple times and one of the best WNYU sets… but it doesn’t seem to be online anywhere. The sound engineer posted over 70 sets online, but not this one.
Interview and 2 songs live at the end.

Doggy Style- WNYU Crucial Chaos Live in Studio,New York City 12/3/87 xfer 1st gen tape punk Flipside

I have been so busy all morning, I forgot to post today’s On This Date. This one is for Jeff (Gus Buss) as he is a big DS fan. I think this one was taped by Dan Pettit and he didn’t live too close to the radio station so you will hear some reception static.

Crucial Chaos was pretty active with these live in studio sessions in the late 80s. I already posted a Murphy’s Law one from here and the band Beyond even had their session released by Revelation records.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Ritz, New York City 10/31/87 complete show audio

Bonus post today, thanks to Angelo Bertini! He told me what to do and got this RHCP show digitized. No known lineage, but it has an odd printed tape label which makes me wonder if it was a bootleg being sold at record shows. It has that look.
Not too bad of a recording, probably a Sony D3 or equivalent.

Camper Van Beethoven- CBGB, NYC 3/21/86 xfer 2nd gen tape audience recording Black Flag Sonic Youth

Happy Monday everyone. Before I post anything that I did not personally record to the sac music archive, I check around to see if it is already out there in similar or better quality. I got this tape back in the 80s from Craig Hilmer, I think. There were a few of us who were huge CVB fans back then and we traded tons of the band’s live tapes. I saw that this show was on archive.org and figured there was no need to post this… but the one on Archive is a board tape, which I never even knew existed! This is an audience recording.
Some industrious soul with more free time than I should matrix the 2 sources together.
