Black Crowes- Supper Club, NYC 7/23/96 Soundcheck xfer from hi8 Master Tape Enhanced

In our search for better audio for Steve Rogers’ videos, we found that there was a nice sounding soundboard tape of the Crowes from this date. I asked the taper for the files and he sent them over for synch. Well, it appears that the band played 2 sets that night and the board tape is not this show. Damn, we tried.

Edit: Steve let me know that this is the soundcheck. Mystery Solved.

Avail- New York City 4/21/96 Xfer from Low Gen VHS tape Enhanced Tim Barry

Here’s another one from Wayne Triggs’ stack of VHS tapes. Man, this one is super low gen- it almost looks like a master tape, but that’s impossible. No smears/color bleed common with copied VHS tapes.
The date is a guess, but it looks the same as a different angle of the show entitled “AVAIL NYC 4/21” on youtube. The poster put them up on 4/22/06, so I am running with it. Someone tell me if I have it wrong.

Ned’s Atomic Dustbin- Roseland Ballroom, NYC 8/18/95 lossless xfer from 1st gen VHS Enhanced Proshot

Here is a VHS tape that I digitized for my friend Derek Purtell, since he asked about Ned’s. I got this tape from Saki Honma, who lived in Japan and taped it off Japanese TV. There was this very cool TV show there who would broadcast concerts in higher quality than other sources that eventually came out. This particular tape had a Wonder Stuff show that is very common, a Cranberries show that seems to not be anywhere, Frank Black, and more. Most of those are coming up!
Anyway, this show was introduced as the “last show” on the TV broadcast. I think this means this is the last show before their breakup in the mid-1990s and according to Wikipedia, they broke up after a show in NYC… so I think this date/venue is right.

Pansy Division- Tramps, New York City, NY 7/25/95 xfer from low gen soundboard cassette

Collections post, from Scott Hamilton’s box of tapes. This one was semi-officially released- it was self released and sold at shows. I considered not posting it since someone must have the official tape, but then I listened to the mix and it needed some fixin’. So what the heck, let’s rebalance this one and post it.

And there is nothing better than posting Anal Mucus and Pansy Division on this particular day.

Babes in Toyland- WDRE Underground Lounge, NYC 5/30/95 xfer from pre-fm DAT soundboard mast

Here’s another Ebay score- Babes in Toyland live in the studio, recorded for radio broadcast. This is clearly the pre-broadcast soundboard recording. There were big gaps of silence on the DAT from when they were broadcasting commercials or something. I did miss one bit of silence at about 26min. Keep listening, they do come back. The mix on that first (real) song could use some work- vocals are buried.. but the rest is good.
By the way, even though I keep posting stuff I bought off Ebay, that doesn’t mean that I am running out of material. I still have my 4,000 cassettes, 2,000 DATs, and 1,000 VHS tapes work through.. along with Jason Ross’ collection of 1,000+ VHS and cassettes, Anonymous’ cassette masters, Radley & Dal Basi’s stuff and many more. These just happen to be in front of me today.

Audio Live Performance

Willie Nelson- Beacon Thtr, NYC 2/14/95 xfer f/ DAT Soundboard Clone Rare Performance with Symphony!

For today’s On This Day in History, I am sharing one of my all-time favorite live shows. When you collect a bunch of live sets, you can see that some bands are spontaneous while others basically do the same things every night.. even down to the banter in between songs. Willie typically falls into the latter group of artists. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, haha.

But this show was unique and special. Willie plays with an orchestra and had 1 rehearsal to prepare. You can hear him say at the end of the show that it was “without a net” but turned out pretty good. I agree, wonderful show.

The show is very dynamic- many quiet parts and a couple of louder ones. Turn it up.

Plexi- Live at Brownies, New York City 1990 xfer from band promo soundboard tape Sub Pop Indie Rock

Last one for today. This one comes from Anonymous 2’s collection. I still owe you the spreadsheet with all of his tapes- I will do it as soon as possible.

Since Anon 2 was a promoter, he would get all kinds of unique demo tapes from bands. This one from Plexi is written completely in white-out by the band. That’s pretty cool.

Plexi released some singles on small labels, was signed to Sub Pop, released 1 album in 1996, and that was it. They’ve played a few reunion and benefit shows since.

This one sounds pretty good.

As with all Anon 2’s tapes, this one is for sale. Please contact me if interested.

Teenage Fanclub- Irving Plaza, NYC 2/19/94 Proshot from Japanese TV 1st Gen VHS FULL SHOW Pyramid

It’s the weekend! That means that you all get moving pictures with sound from me, rather than just audio only.
I am surprised that the full show isn’t on YT yet. There is a 20min clip up, but not the entire Japanese TV broadcast. Includes a 10min tour of NYC clubs (Knitting Factory, Pyramid etc) at the start along with an interview with TFC.
This is GREAT stuff- proshot full show of the band at their peak!

Yo La Tengo- CBGB, New York City 1/31/92 xfer from 1st gen audience cassette

For today’s “On This Day in History” post, I chose this Yo La Tengo set that I received from the taper. I had thought I got it from Jim Romeo (gloriously depicted in the Tom Courtenay video), but as I was trying to find an image for this post, I discovered that 1 track from this set was officially released AND it helped me remember an old trader friend. Double Dare (Sominextraction) from this set was released on the Big Day Coming 7″ and the notes helped me remember trading with Rich Baybusky, the taper of the show. I have close to 200 Yo La Tengo recordings on the ol’ tape list, and just about all of the early ones came from Rich and Jim.

GWAR, Prong, Raging Slab, 24-7 Spyz, Sea Hags: Much Music Special at CMJ, New York Live & Int 1989?

It’s Friday, so time for video! Next up is something from Gary Shurtleff’s VHS collection. Not only was he one of the most prolific arena filmers in the 90s, but he traded VHS tapes and got some amazing stuff. It’s kind of funny- every time I go to work on Gary’s tapes, I never know what I am going to find. This time it is an Attitude show that I helped film and never had a good copy.. and this.

Canadian TV network Much Music went to the CMJ Music Fest in 1989 (I think) and profiled 5 bands. The GWAR segment is really good- especially the backstage interview and when they crash the “do drugs belong in rock and roll” panel. Includes a mix of live footage shot from the fest, interviews, and an occasional “official” video for one of the band’s singles.

Very nice quality- must be a low gen VHS copy.
