Phantom Limbs- Legion of Doom, Columbus Oh 10/21/03 transfer from DAT Audience Master

Another NEW Collection! I mentioned that I drove to Columbus Oh to pick up a collection. This one belongs to Ryan Gear. I have known Ryan for about 20 years through the Postcard (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt) list. We finally got to meet face to face last week and he gave me a lot of DATs and Minidiscs. This is the first DAT collection that I have picked up- thanks Ryan!

Ryan had really nice taping equipment and he hit a very diverse set of shows- the expected alt country/americana, but also a lot of recordings from the local DIY basement punk show house- Legion of Doom. I checked out photos of the place online and it reminds me of Casa de Chaos… a lot.

Anyway, the suitcase full of his and Jim Utz’ tapes is not even unpacked yet so I just stuck my hand in and grabbed 3 random DATs. It was pretty cool to pull a Bay Area band playing in that basement first.

Legion of Doom- Ruthies Inn, Berkeley Ca 5/31/86 xfer f/Low Gen Audio Cassette w/Chris Dodge Spazz

Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection continues to bring the awesome stuff.

Legion of Doom were a metal (discogs calls them punk, but they sound metal to me) band from San Jose, Ca. Members were Chris Dodge (Stikky, Spazz, etc etc), Greg Lynch, Jason McNair, Matt Hubbard, and Mike Allport.

They had 2 releases- one demo tape and 2 songs on the Bay Mud comp, self-released by David Hayes. Wayne told me that they used to cover Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”, but I don’t hear it here.

This is likely to be a first gen cassette since Wayne and Chris were friends, but it is not confirmed. The master might be sitting with Dan Hague/Distort Oakland. Sounds like a boom box recording- not bad.
