Jawbreaker- Izabel’s, Chicago Il 5/23/93 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Punk Band Blake Schwarzenbach

It’s time for the Patreon voter’s choice for last week! This one is yet another video filmed by the Byrne brothers and is from Jason Ross’ collection. This club appears to be tiny, it reminds me of the Cattle Club. Bob or Mike was right on top of Chris since there was no place to go.

Recorded by: The Byrne Brothers
Equipment used: Sony HRS9800U or HRS9911U and Canopus ADVC300
Mastered to DVD/vol boost in Sony Vegas Pro 10

Jawbreaker- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/2/93 xfer from master soundboard tape

Last August, I went to visit Radley (1st full-time Gilman soundman 1987-1996?) at his home in San Francisco. We had a blast talking about music. It was funny, I have diverse musical tastes, but nothing like him. I would want to talk about some type of rock music, and he was throwing on high def audio CD’s of country albums.. which I also enjoy.
While I was there, he brought out a binder full of CD’s of shows he mixed and recorded at Gilman. I think this was a binder of the best ones, as the mix on most of these are better than your average Gilman mix. So, thanks to Radley and I hope you don’t mind me posting some of these on occasion.
This one sounds like it could be a matrix tape- I hear a lot of audience and boomy bass in there. The guitar and vocals were a bit buried so I fixed it up a little in Izotope.
Posting since Jawbreaker is touring, and we got to see them Sunday night.

Rebalance in Izotope by Shayne Stacy (vocal and guitar +3db)

Let’s celebrate that incredibly kind article from Gabe Meline and the KQED arts and entertainment staff. What a wonderful gift. Thank you.

I haven’t posted anything from Radley’s CD’s for quite a long time, but I am adding them back into the rotation after doing those collections videos. It gave me the push I needed to bring the collections that are not physically here. Out of sight, out of mind, you know?

Here is one that doesn’t seem to be anywhere online. The mix starts off super hot but even though the recording peaks often, you can’t really hear it in the recording. The mix moves around and settles into a nice balance a few minutes in.

Jawbreaker- Reckless Records, Chicago Il. 8/29/90 xfer from low gen audiotape East Bay Punk

Here is another one requested by Todd Pritchard, from Jason Ross’ collection of tapes. There is a video of this show on youtube with fair quality/distorted audio. This one appears to be from a different source- possibly a pro walkman. Sounds like a Sony D3 or D6 to me.

Jawbreaker- Lounge Ax, Chicago Il. 8/28/90 xfer from unknown gen VHS tape East Bay Punk

Here is yet another Jawbreaker show from Jason Ross’ collection, that was digitized for the Turn it Around documentary many years ago. There is another version of this show on Youtube, but it is much shorter- it is less than half of the total time of this one. I think their quality is better- this one is pretty generated.

no enhancements. Can’t fix a video this degraded.

Jawbreaker- KCSB Live in Studio, Santa Barbara 8/8/90 Audio only East Bay Punk

Here’s a tape that must be pretty well-circulated from the 1990s tape trading circles, but has not made its way to youtube yet. This is another one requested by Todd Pritchard, from Jason Ross’ collection.
Side note: This was marked on Jason’s tape as 10/10/89, but he corrected the date to 8/8/90.
