Exodus- The Stone, San Francisco Ca. 1/5/85 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette

Happy Monday everyone. If you are an Exodus fan, you MUST listen to this. I can’t believe how good this one sounds, given the “early punk/metal days” equipment used. Tour Manager Doug clearly had the magic touch when finding a room’s sweet spot.
Not only that, but this is in that time frame where the band were playing some of my favorite sets- a lot from Bonded by Blood (fka “A Lesson in Violence” as the flyer shows) plus the best pre-album tracks- in fact, these might be the best recordings of Death Row, Hell’s Breath and Impaler out there. Baloff’s vocal performance is top notch. This one will be a show I go back to and listen repeatedly. Thanks Doug.

This one is just perfect. The quality is very good- nice and clean which allowed for a good EQ. The era is probably my all-time favorite — a nice mix of BBB and the demo era of songs. You get BBB songs, plus Hell’s Breath, Death Row, and Impaler. And probably best of all- Baloff is absolutely ON FIRE and hilarious. Referring to break dancing (which he apparently hated): “they can flip around in my toilet”. WHAT? Man, imagine Baloff on stage today- he would be a one man controversy machine.

Finally, a Tour Manager Doug post this week. As you could probably tell from the midnight posts, life has been a little chaotic lately.
This one sounds pretty good- you get most of BBB and some of the old songs that never made it out. Hell’s Breath & Death Row back to back rip!

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! I still have a bunch of Aftershock videos to post, but none are ready yet. I met up with Doug last week and gave his big box of tapes back- huge thanks to Doug for letting me hold on to them for so long. What a fun project. I think that we have enough Doug posts to keep Tuesdays going for the rest of the year.
Anyway, a Youtube commenter asked for Exodus, so here you go. It’s been a while since the last early Exodus post. Man, I love these pre-BBB shows. Killer sets.

Exodus- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 7/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette bay area thrash metal

Another Doug recording to round out the week of audio posts. I just looked through the box of tapes that I have not done yet and there is a ton of Slayer and Exodus left to go. It’s unbelievable. Stay tuned…
I pushed the EQ on this one a lot- there was some high end distortion that I had to get out of there. The odd vocal in/out phasing is that way on the (pre-EQ) tape. What a show- Exodus, Anthrax w/Turbin, then Raven when they were one of the best bands around.

Let’s do another Doug tape today. This one was clean enough that the EQ job was pretty effective. It’s definitely an enojyable listen.
Band Introduction by James Hetfield.
Sorry so short today, I have a migraine and can’t take meds until after an important meeting this afternoon… and it keeps getting worse.

Back to Doug’s collection for Monday. I always find Exodus very motivating when I have the morning or Monday blahs. This is another one of those killer pre-Bonded by Blood shows that has them playing most of the forthcoming album along with a few earlier songs. Along with almost all of BBB, you get Hell’s Breath, Death Row and Die By His Hand. This has to be one of the last times that DBHH is played. They pretty much quit performing it after part of it was pilfered for the bridge in Creeping Death.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Or, as archive follower Mike Peacock says, “never heard of him”. Of course you have never heard of people taping. We were in the background, trying not to get caught! Just making fun, Mike.
Here is a fun and loose set from Exodus at Ruthie’s. As is usual with this time period, you get most of BBB and 3 demo songs.

Let’s kick of the work week in a good way- here is the mighty Exodus with a pre-1st LP set from Tour Manager Doug’s collection. Man, I love these early sets with songs from BBB along with some pre-LP songs.
I really pushed the EQ on this one and I think it sounds really good. I am enjoying the hell out of it. Doug was the man when it came to finding a venue’s sweet spot.
Some low end noise in between songs because I cranked up the bass a bunch. I think it’s a good tradeoff.
