So this was day 3 of a crazy 3 show run in 3 days, with the night before being another trip to SF in the middle of a storm. So I was running on fumes. I had hoped to go to Bottom of the Hill to see the Undead after this, but there was no way.
I still can’t believe they book Infest at 1234 Go! Records. It was so packed and there were huge drops of sweat dripping off the ceiling. I was record shopping right before this set so I got stuck in the back of the room. It made for kind of a crappy G40 monopod angle, but it sounds great!
This was No Statik’s last show ever. The lead singer shoved me off stage while I was trying to set up a gopro behind the drummer. Haha, sorry for being in the way. Thanks to Daniel Hague (Killthatcat) for taking my angles and mixing them with his for a 3 camera multicam. It is chaotic, but that is how the show was.

This show was so packed that it was like a sauna inside the room. In fact, sweat was coming off the pipes above and raining on the crowd. It was SO gross. I got nailed in the face a few times.
Tough show to film- Joe was in the crowd more often than he was on stage. At least it sounds good!

Man, where do I start? So, if you read the Avengers post from this night, you know that Penelope Houston came to our rescue when it was nearly impossible to get permission to film by working with the venue.
After we got our passes & before Penelope’s set, Jim & I started to set up our cameras. We had 4 or 5 with 1 small footprint tripod & 1 monopod. The house guy (stage manager? production manager?) comes upstairs and starts yelling at us, telling us that it costs $500 to multicam and who gave permission to do it etc… I calmly comply with all of his requests and we start breaking down the tripod, and he gave us each the OK to operate 1 camera. I also had a digital recorder so we lined into the soundboard- the house soundman was super nice.
During the set break after Avengers, I approached Mudhoney’s soundman and Parker Gibbs was there, talking with the soundman and Mudhoney’s manager (nice meeting you Parker!). They both(Parker/Soundman) told me to just go for it and film. I also told them that we had a recorder lined into the board and they were cool about it.
So Mudhoney starts and “house guy” comes up and starts yelling at Jim. Jim let him know that I had explicit permission from the band’s management. About 1 minute later, my digital recorder stops recording. When I got to it after the show, all record/pause/play lights were flashing which had never happened before, or since. I’m not sure what happened. So, that’s why you may hear the audio quality change after 15-20min. The board mix was SO good- it’s a shame, really.
It was a great show, and I am super thankful to the bands for letting us film. Not so much with the venue. Things have changed A LOT in SF since the 80s- It has changed from a culturally rich, affordable place where artists were free to do their own thing, to a bunch of corporate or quasi- corporate venues giving DIY people a hard time… even in the same goddamned building (Kennel Club –> independent)

Thanks Jim for editing together 2 roving cameras- that’s not easy.
This was quite the experience. I used to come here in the late 80s/early 90s and just walk right in with my video equipment and film bands (with permission, of course). Now, they only let you bring in equipment if you have band permission… and there is no access to artists allowed. I have video’d both in the past, but I did not have an easy way to contact either one…
After a few minutes of fruitless negotiation with the venue, I put my equipment in coat check and tried to figure out how I could get permission. We got so lucky to find Penelope in the crowd, and she was SO nice and accommodating… even though it was last minute. She got me a video pass and off we went. I can’t thank Penelope enough- we really appreciate it!
Special thanks to Jim McLain for heading to the show and filming with me, and for the edit/audio matrix work. This is not an easy edit- we were both filming independent of each other and he had the “fun” job of trying to splice it together into a cohesive final product!
