Attitude- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/24/87 xfer from master soundboard cassette Adjustment Condemned

Continuing the story from yesterday- we get the flat tire changed and one of those little bike tires is now on the car, and we get to Gilman way too early. We saw Sacramento/Rancho Cordova’s Herbicide open the show and I should be able to post that soundboard next week.
The mix changes on this one so much that I can’t fix it. The only thing that was consistently fixable is the snare, so I bumped that up 6.5db in the mix.

Fishbone- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca 10/19/87 xfer from 1st gen cassette

It’s mediocre Monday! Let me explain mediocre Monday a little, since I have had people come to me and say “what are you doing? This isn’t mediocre”. Mediocre Monday showcases recordings that are typically old and usually uncirculated, but were recorded with non-professional equipment. They aren’t bad (well, sometimes they are), they just aren’t Pro Walkman/DAT quality.
Today’s MM comes from my good friend Anonymous. He had an Aiwa consumer recorder that produced thin but clear recordings. I did everything I could to EQ this so it had some bass, plus I cut out some of the highs. It was too much high end, even my damaged ears.
Fishbone, in their prime, in Sacramento! I know a few friends were at this one.

Camper Van Beethoven- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca 10/10/87 Transfer from Master Audio Cassette

This one is from Anonymous’ collection, and it was a pretty important tape to me. After he taped the show, he made me a copy and asked me to give the band a try- I had never heard of them. They immediately became one of my favorite bands. My fandom knew no bounds and I was soon in the top 3 CVB collectors in the world (shout out to Carolyn Adams and Craig Hilmer who were the other 2). I was even called “the official CVB archivist” by Jonathan and Victor at a Magnet show at Old Ironsides, years before Tom Scharff became the REAL one.

So, yeah, influential tape. The El Do had great acoustics since everything was carpeted, so it is really clear but very thin. I did my best to get some bass in the mix via EQ and Izotope.

M.D.C.- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/10/87 xfer from master soundboard cassette MDC Millions Dead C

James Edmonds also sent me this MDC set- it was on the flipside of the Feederz show. Funny story about this one from James- “The MDC set is only half, as someone else wanted to record that set & our sound guy split recording time, so somewhere out there is the other half.”. I can’t say I have ever heard of that being done before.

Feederz- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/10/87 xfer from master soundboard cassette rebalanced

We have a new contributor to the archive- James Edmonds reached out to me and asked if I could digitize some of his soundboard tapes from The Farm. He worked there and would tape some of the shows. He sent some tapes to me last week- here is the first.
Fresh off their “dead dog” scandal at Gilman in July of 87, here is a feederz set. This one was almost all drums and vocals but since there was very low noise on the tape, Izotope allowed me to crank the guitars to +9 without sounding weird– that’s a rarity. It usually starts to bonk out at +6 or higher.

Redrum- Lite Rail Inn, Sacramento Ca 10/10/87 xfer from master audio tape Thrash Metal

What an odd show. It starts out with the PA just hissing loudly, and then when the band starts playing, you can’t hear Carlos. I guess the P.A. blew before they went on. That probably explains the 28 minute set length. If you ever wanted to perform Redrum karaoke, here’s your chance. The tape sounds good and the band is pretty tight- this is probably the best live intro to Blood Sucking Freaks I have ever heard.
Oh, and we were clearly stoked about being “signed” to Metal Blade (for 1 song), as we mention it multiple times during the show. Carlos says that the band is going into the studio on Tuesday to record that track for Metal Massacre, but they were going to record Into the Ovens according to the show. They ended up recording Random Violence. I wonder what happened there… I personally think Random Violence is a better choice.

Crimpshrine- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/9/87 xfer from 1st gen soundboard tape-DAT Lookout Records

Here is the other vote winner this week. This is a typical early Gilman mix- the biggest challenge was the drums. There is very little snare in the mix and when I tried to rebalance in Izotope, it would pull in a bunch of non-drum instruments and sound awful. I was able to play with the separation feature in the app to get a little more snare without making it sound odd.

Last week’s vote was kind of a fiasco- I accidentally started it a day after I announced it, and then people were emailing me and I didn’t see them until today. Thankfully, we are now polling through Patreon, so no more chaos. I promise.

I never knew that Short Dogs Grow headlined this one. I wonder if there is tape of that set.

The Membranes- Bogart’s, Cincinnati Oh 10/6/87 transfer from 1st gen VHS tape Punk

Here’s another one from Tony Philputt’s VHS tapes, by way of Phil Go. Is this really the Membranes from England? They had records out at the time, but that bill is insane- Redd Kross, Membranes AND a pre- anything released Afghan Whigs? I wonder if this was a one-off or if it was a tour. Regardless, it kicks ass.

The video, however, does not kick ass. It’s decent but the audio is distorted and the lighting is very red, which always gave older cameras trouble. I wonder if there is Afghan Whigs video from this night.
