Regurgitor- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco 8/9/87 xfer from master VHS tape Parody Death Metal

LATE post today- sorry about that. I finally figured out the Adobe Premiere issues so you get more VHS transfers today! That’s one of many reasons why this is late.

When I was asking Chris about this video and band, he said that Jim Pittman is playing bass and singing. When I looked up Jim Pittman on discogs, the only logical match is Jym, drummer from Mr. T Experience. But that can’t be, right? Naaah.

This is worth a watch just to hear the ridiculous song titles. They were ahead of their time- kinda like the Steel Panther of death metal! Well done.

Nomeansno- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 8/8/87 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette rebalanced

Here is another Gilman board tape, courtesy of Radley Hirsch. He sent it to Anonymous back in the late 80s. The mix was good, but not perfect. I think the rebalance job in Izotope helps it a lot. Guitar is still a little buried but enjoyable.

Reagan Youth- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 8/7/87 xfer from master audio cassette

Here’s another nugget of greatness from James R. Edmonds. He sent me some of his master tapes to digitize- more to come. This one is an audience recording- a boom box with the soundman supplying a mic to use with it. Not perfect quality, but any RY with Dave Insurgent is great to hear.
Between James’ and Waynes’ tapes, it’s going to be bay area time machine here for the the next year or so.

Donner Party- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 8/5/87 xfer band archive VHS tape-MiniDV Quasi Heatmiser

Today’s On This Date in History took about 7 hours to process, believe it or not.

Melanie Clarin (Donner Party, SF Seals, Harm farm, Yard Sale etc) was very kind in loaning me Donner Party’s VHS tapes back in the late 90s. Since there was no good way to digitize video back then, I lined the VCR into a miniDV camcorder so I could at least stop the generation loss of a VHS dub. I eventually authored it to a DVD years later.

If you are unaware of Donner Party, they were one of the jewels of the late 80s San Francisco “alternative before it had the name” scene. I absolutely love the band and Sam/Melanie’s harmonies. Sam Coomes moved to the pacific northwest after the band dissolved and started a number of bands (including Heatmiser with Elliott Smith) and is currently leads the band Quasi. Unfortunately, the board mix on this is not great so seek out their released material for a better representation.

Speaking of released material, it looks like the 1st Donner Party LP (Cryptovision Records) was reissued with bonus demo tracks recently. I need to get me one of those. Someone please let me know when they appear in the US.

Live Concert Video

Redrum- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca 8/2/87 Xfer from VHS Master w/ Soundboard Audio Live

I have been wanting to get this video synched up with the audio forever. This is the first concert I ever filmed! I borrowed Damon Brindle’s Dad’s camera. It was one of those ones that had the camera portion separate from a little portable VCR that actually did the recording. You hooked them together with BNC cables. The camera did not perform well, as you can see. But thanks to Derek Purtell (who did an amazing job of synching the master soundboard tape to this video), you can finally see this thing in “as good as it gets” quality. Enjoy! R.I.P. Mike Caboy & Don Adams.

Oh, the footage at the beginning is Greg Decay(Johnson) and I re-enacting my barfing off of their apartment balcony the night or weekend before.

Soundboard audio starts about 5:30 in.

Trouble- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca 8/2/87 Xfer from Master Audio Tape

I have a few concert-going regrets in my life and this is one of them. I LOVED the first Trouble album when it first came out, but I went into my black/death metal phase and did not appreciate how great they were at this show. I talked through a good part of the show. And they might have let me video as well, they were one of the few artists who seemed to be cool with taping in the late 80s. So dumb. Oh well. Enjoy.

Crimpshrine- Robert Eggplant’s Garage, Pinole Ca 8/1/87 xfer from master audio cassette Lookout Punk

Collections post from Robert Eggplant’s LARGE collection of East Bay Punk. I know that we just posted a Crimpshrine show earlier this week, but I actually planned ahead for once and had this one done beforehand. And Crimpshrine is one of the greatest EB punk bands ever, so no apologies necessary.
I wish I had kept notes on what I did with this one- I know that I had to push the EQ quite a bit. I probably should spectral denoise that low rumble on the tape at some point.
