Trouble- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 10/16/84 xfer from master Audio Cassette Doom Stoner Rock Metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Since Brian Walsby was talking about the band a few days ago, let’s go with this.
Man, this sounds fantastic for an old recording. The stone had really great sound.
I mentioned that it is probably time to start posting from all of the collections I have here, including my own. Well, I just did a quick inventory and there are EIGHTEEN collections here! So, I plan to start doing this- probably starting in early December. Expect a post from each collection about every 3 weeks .. unless I can do this full-time and post multiple things a day. lol.

Exciter- Stone, San Francisco Ca 9/29/84 xfer from master audio cassette Canada Heavy Metal

Another one from Tour Manager Doug’s awesome box- I have only heard 1 early Exciter tape that rivals this one, quality wise so this is a real treat! I wish I could have seen this tour- I saw the next one at the Crest in 1985, but this tour would have been THE ultimate tour for me.
Someone yells into the mic as the music/intro starts, so there are some odd volume fluctuations for the first minute or so that I might have made worse by trying to fix. It’s fine from 1min in-forward.

Lita Ford- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 8/4/84 xfer from master audio cassette

More Doug for you on this fine Monday. Speaking of Doug, that Slayer Portland Live audio/Photo post from last week appears to have gone viral(or, as viral as these posts get). If anyone knows where it got posted (any big websites), please let me know. It’s been off the charts.
This is another one that EQ’d really nicely- sounds pretty good! Thanks Doug. She does a Beatles cover but no Runaways. Go figure.
The photo comes from the same tour, but no location/venue were ID’d in the pic.

Slayer- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 7/13/84 xfer from master cassette Thrash Metal

Here’s another amazing recording from tour manager DOUG (not Mark, what the hell was I thinking?)… a nice sounding show from mid-84, on the bill with Laaz Rockit and Lizzy Borden!
The Stone always had nice sound- I think it was because just about every surface in that place was carpeted. This show was so clean that the EQ made it sound pretty damned nice. Thanks DOUG!

Slayer- Stone, San Francisco Ca 5/24/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! This tape is one of the best quality recordings from his collection, if not THE best one. I don’t know how he was able to get such amazing results from that walkman- all of the instruments are clear and have a good amount of separation, including the bass. I didn’t have to do anything to this tape- this is how it sounded, right off the playback. Thanks Doug!
Anybody know what happened to Roxz (pictured in the ad)? No releases on discogs, never heard of ’em.

Megadeth- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 4/18/84 xfer f/ master audio cassette rebalanced Thrash Metal

Another awesome quality recording from Doug for you today. It was so good that while spot-checking it, I thought it was a soundboard tape. Nope, the crowd noise between songs must make it an audience tape… but since the recording was so clean, I was able to put it into Izotope and do a rebalance, vs. the standard EQ job. Dave’s vocals and the guitar were buried, and Izotope pulled them right up front. Gotta love that software.
Oh, one last thing. The Izotope rebalance pushed the levels up a bit- the songs are fine, but the between song banter/crowd peaked/saturated a bit.
Now that I listen again, it sounds like a board tape.

Megadeth- Stone, San Francisco Ca. 2/19/84 xfer from master audio cassette 2nd show ever Kerry King

Another CLASSIC show from tour manager Doug’s box of tapes here. This is Megadeth’s 2nd show ever, with Kerry King filling in on 2nd guitar duty. How amazing is it that Los Angeles-based Megadeth chose the bay area to have their debut shows? Bay Area Thrash, indeed.
I pushed the EQ on this one hard- there is still this little band of shrilly high end I can’t seem to get out of there, but it sounds pretty nice. As usual, the show was recorded from the sweet spot by Doug, but the Stone had pretty nice sound- hard to go wrong there.

Abattoir- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 2/19/84 xfer f/ master audiotape Power Speed Metal Los Angeles

Alright, here is another rarity from Tour Manager Doug’s box of tapes. This looks to be the earliest known recording of Los Angeles speed metal band Abbatoir in existence. They were opening for one of Megadeth’s first shows ever (the ones with Kerry on guitar).
I did my best to bring the high end down and bass up on this one- the snare was way back in the mix to start, but it gets better. One of those apparent “soundcheck during first song of set” deals.

Bitch- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 4/18/82 xfer from master audio cassette heavy street metal blade

This is another show from Doug’s collection that sounds pretty damned good. I was a big fan of Bitch early on- I had the Damnation Alley EP and Be My Slave LP- both are really great. Keep in mind that their EP was released a year before Metallica and Slayer’s first releases… they were up in the running for heaviest US band there for a bit, imho.
