Soup- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 xfer from VHS Master tape Battle of the Bands Punk Very Small

I think this is the last show I have digitized from Chris Eng’s VHS tapes. Time to grab another handful and get to it. This last batch lasted months! So much more to get to.
Soup was part of that first wave of bands to come out of Gilman. Richie Bucher (artist of the original 924 gilman logo & Green Day Dookie album cover) and Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam and many others) were in the band.
They put out a demo and a couple of things on Very Small Records.

Soup- Dave’s Garage, Albany Ca 2/7/87 Xfer from Master VHS tape Enhanced East Bay Punk

If you are following along with the VHS tape image on the facebook posts, you can probably figure out what is coming for today. Soup is probably best known as being the first band to ever play 924 Gilman- they opened the first show ever on 12/31/87. I actually have an audio tape of that one. Richie Bucher played bass in the band. He designed the 924 Gilman logo and the Dookie album cover.
The band consisted of Chris Giese, Richie Bucher, Sergie Loobkoff, and Tom Hamma. Lots of east bay punk lineage there- Samiam, Slambodians and more.
This looks to be the only Soup video on the internets.

Live Concert Video

Soup- Dave’s Garage, Albany Ca 2/7/87 xfer from low gen audio cassette East Bay Punk

Collections post from Chris Eng today. Chris doesn’t know where this one came from. He thought it might be a cassette dub of the show’s audio, but it is too good quality for that.
Like the Crimpshrine I posted last month, this one required an EQ and a rebalance job. Sounds pretty decent now.

Soup- Live in KALX Studio, Berkeley Ca. 11/16/86 xfer from low gen audio cassette East Bay Punk

Here’s another one that Todd Pritchard pulled from Jason Ross’ collection when he was here a while back. This one starts with low levels, then too high, and then it gets good about 2 minutes in. Awesome early, pre-Gilman east bay punk artifact!
Last Will, how did you feel about all of the profanity on your show? Did you get any follow up calls from the FCC? It was hilariously shocking to hear all of that happen.
