Ah, finally back in the studio. I only spent about 20 minutes in here over the past week. Time to play catch up.
This one is from my collection. I digitized a bunch of stuff for the KCRW archives last year and never did anything with them. Expect a KCRW related post about once every few weeks.
I got to see this band once. They were opening for Kevn Kinney and Peter Buck at Paradise Lounge in SF. I had never heard their music before and they blew me away. It was hard to sit there with a video camera in the bag and not pull it out. Those were the days of expensive tapes and battery packs. Plus I didn’t have permission. It would have been a total bummer to get tossed from the club before Kevn and Peter came on.

I was planning to post something else from this DAT and I came across this. It’s not on my list and not even labeled on the DAT. I went into sleuth mode and found out that the show they announced (Echobelly/Velocity Girl at the Roxy) took place on Wednesday 12/7/94, the Brave New World show took place on Sunday night, so I think that this is 12/3. Being in Whittier at the time, I was just out of reception for KCRW. Huge thanks for Kevin Haynes (wherever he is) for documenting so much alternative and indie stuff in the mid 90s.

I am going to try to post not two, but THREE audio recordings for you today. I should probably take off this cast and get serious with typing here.
The first one is an On This Date in History thing. I did it again- I had one all uploaded and half-written and discovered that it is already online. Not a fan of wasted time.
My friend Kevin Haynes taped this one- he did a lot of indie stuff with his DAT back in the 90s and we would trade/hang out while I lived there. Decent audience recording that I EQ’d to help bring out some bass.
And what is up with this newspaper preview? Is this a recommendation to see the show or not?

Here’s one that appears to be uncirculated- nothing on Live Music Archive and nothing on youtube. Kevin Haynes taped this one and I cloned it off of him. Not sure if he ever traded it out.

The Geraldine Fibbers- KCRW Brave New World, SANTA MONICA CA. 9/11/94 xfer f/DAT Clone
Remember about a month back, I mentioned that I digitized a bunch of tapes for the KCRW archivist? Here is another one of them. You will see a post from each collection about once a month at this point, I think. This was the introduction to one of my favorite bands. My friend Michael Pemberton told me about this band that I would love and he sent this to me, and he was right. Lifetime fan from this point on. Luckily, I lived in L.A. at the time and I was able to catch one of their shows before moving back to Sacramento in 1995. If you have never heard the band before, forward to 5:03 and listen to Lilybelle. It was the lead track to their first album and a great representation. George Jones cover at 14:50 if that’s more your thing.

For today’s On This Date in History, I digitized a DAT that I cloned myself back in 1994. From 1992-1995, I lived in Whittier (southern cal). I had a few good friends during my time there. Kevin Haynes lived up in the northern part of the L.A. area and could pick up a good signal from KCRW. Almost all of these old KCRW DATs came from him. Thanks Kevin!
I was excited to digitize this one as I didn’t remember a Lush KCRW MBE performance. Well, now I know why- they didn’t perform. It was just interview along with CD tracks. It’s an entertaining interview with Miki and (I think) Chris, which makes it historically significant regardless.

This was such a great show. Buffalo Tom, who was very popular in ’94, played the time McCabe’s for 2 acoustic shows. BT acoustic shows were rare, which made it even more special. I have a vivid memory of the entire front row of the seated crowd, “headbanging” while sitting to their song “Larry”. It was funny and awesome. The people looked like those old fashioned toy birds that dipped their noses in water, then back up. Great stuff. I hope my excitement over the show did not affect my filming job too much- I was really excited about this one! Filmed with Sony TR81.
I was going to post this on the weekend, but I see that it is Erik Flannigan’s birthday today. I have never told this story, but Erik is responsible for me starting this hobby again about 10 years ago. In the mid to late 90s, grunge and punk got huge and people were bootlegging the hell out of my recordings. Bands got so big that you could never get permission, and if you made a decent tape, it would get bootlegged. It got so frustrating that it made the hobby no fun anymore. So I quit and these tapes lived in a closet. Erik emailed me 10? years ago and asked if I could digitize this video of Buffalo Tom- there were people who wanted to see it. I politely declined and told him I was done with bootleggers. He then told me that with the advent of youtube/etc, all of these videos were free for everyone and DVD bootlegging was pretty much gone. Well, hot damn! Even though I work in tech, I wasn’t paying attention. So I eased back into the hobby with a PCM-M10 and DPA mics, then a consumer Canon camcorder… and it has snowballed into this. So thanks Erik. My wife hates it. Haha. This also means you are finally getting your thumb drive back with this video on it. I took the hi8 tape and increased brightness and adjusted contrast, then degrained in Neat video. Took the DAT master recording and rebalanced it in Izotope RX8, then put it all together in Pluraleyes. Audio starts about 20 seconds in- you can see me lay down the camera on my lap to start the DAT! Also, the levels are way too high for the first couple songs so you get a little distortion then I eventually adjust them.
