NOFX- Side Stage no venue/date possibly Catalyst, Santa Cruz Ca 2/28/01 xfer f/DV Master

This one is from Guerin Myall’s collection. The tape is labeled “NOFX Side Stage” and that’s all the detail there is. Since Guerin’s home base was santa cruz and he was most active in the 2000s, I tried finding any shows in that time frame. This one came up. All you internet sleuths, please let me know if this setlist lines up with the 2001 time frame. Maybe Guerin can help out a bit.

There might be multiple angles of this show. Still working throgh digitiing all the angles- time to restart now that the video capture setup is working again.

The Faction- The Catalyst, Santa Cruz Ca Early 2000’s Transfer from Master DV Tape Skate punk

This is one angle of (I think) 3 from Guerin Myall’s collection. I was a huge Faction fan and I had no idea that they got back together until I saw a listing at Capitol Garage in 2002. They were playing in Santa Cruz for a couple years before that. At least I was in the loop for the 2014-2020 reunion years.

We have been plowing through Guerin’s tapes as fast as possible, 2 different ways. Old DV tapes are notoriously finicky, especially at LP speed so we are running them with the lossless setup and then again with the old Camcorder-firewire-into-the-PC thing. There are good things about each method that make it worthwhile.

Man, Guerin had a NICE camera back then. I had a $1600 panasonic pro DV camera and it was noisier than this.

The Vandals- Palookaville , Santa Cruz Ca 4/6/95(Maybe) xfer f/master DV tape Punk

On to Guerin Myall’s collection for today’s video post. I am in the middle of plowing through a bunch of his DV tapes, and we are going to do our best to sort out multiple angles of the same show and edit them together.

This tape was labeled “Fury 66/Vandals” and that is all I have to go on. I checked Santa Cruz Sentinel history and it looks like those two bands played together twice- once at the Vet’s Hall, which does not look like this venue… and a place called Palookaville. I could not find photos online of the venue (and it is long closed), but it said it was “long and narrow” and this place looks long and narrow.. so let’s run with it. This 13min was all that there was on this tape.

Camper van Beethoven- Cha Cha’s, Santa Cruz Ca. 2/23/85 xfer from band archive tape Lisher’s 1st

When I look for shows to post for the “On This Day” series, I tend to look for ones that are not online at all.. but sometimes I find something like this. This one is on the Live Music Archive already, but it is from an unknown lineage CDR. This one comes right off of Jonathan’s tape, played back on my old Nakamichi CR5A in the late 1990s/early 2000’s directly onto CDR with one of those Philips CDR880 decks.
This is Greg Lisher’s first show with the band. I am so glad that I kept these CDRs in good shape- I was able to extract it without any issues.
The songs are still a bit primitive sounding here, but there is a ton from the first album, and both covers that became set staples are here as well. You also get an early version of “Lincoln Shrine”, which would be reincorporated into sets toward the end of the band’s first run, in 1989/90.
