Sebadoh- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 10/7/94 xfer from DAT clone of master

Here’s another great recording from Kevin Haynes’ unsurfaced collection of recordings. He was a good friend back then- he and Todd Nakamine were my closest friends during my 3 years in Whittier. I hope he is doing well.
I was planning on posting a multicamera video but we found an issue with it so we had to scrap and re-do. I just happened to find this on my hard drive- I digitized it 2 years ago. Lou has some great one-liners in here. Full band in studio.

Kristin Hersh- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 9/29/94 DAT Master Clone Throwing Muses

Happy Monday everyone! I am taking a break from the KROQ Acoustic Xmas daily posts for a few days to bring a little more variety. First one is from another L.A.- area broadcast, recorded by Kevin Haynes. This is an interview and album tracks only, no in studio performance.

Stereolab- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 9/8/94 xfer from DAT Master Clone Interview

Here’s an interview with Chris Douridas and Letitia/Tim from stereolab. Unfortunately no live performance, includes some album tracks. From Kevin Haynes’ collection- he taped it off KCRW on DAT, this is from a clone of the master.

Lush- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 8/9/94 xfer f/ DAT FM Clone Interview 4ad indie

For today’s On This Date in History, I digitized a DAT that I cloned myself back in 1994. From 1992-1995, I lived in Whittier (southern cal). I had a few good friends during my time there. Kevin Haynes lived up in the northern part of the L.A. area and could pick up a good signal from KCRW. Almost all of these old KCRW DATs came from him. Thanks Kevin!

I was excited to digitize this one as I didn’t remember a Lush KCRW MBE performance. Well, now I know why- they didn’t perform. It was just interview along with CD tracks. It’s an entertaining interview with Miki and (I think) Chris, which makes it historically significant regardless.

R.I.P. Chris.

Luna- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 4/3/94 xfer from DAT Master Dean Wareham

I lived in Whitter, Ca from Sep of 1992 through November of 1995. I loved the fact that I could see a bunch of shows in driving distance from my house- I could see some bands play 3x: Hollywood, Long Beach, and San Juan Capistrano or San Diego. It was awesome. One of the downsides to living in Whitter was that I would get spotty reception to the college radio stations. I taped this one myself and it had a bunch of radio static. I was able to de-static most of it without making it sound overprocessed. If I tried to push it more, it sounds odd.
Classic Luna performance on KCRW, before the station started archiving performances online.

Lois- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 1/10/94 xfer from DAT FM Master Indie K Records

I had some time off work so I was able to get a bunch of requests digitized, and sometimes the stuff that was also on the tape is even better than the requested show. That’s the case with this one. What a great performance in studio. The band features Amy Farina from Coriky and many others.

Penelope Houston- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 7/9/93 DAT Master Audio Avengers

I am a bit oversensitive to smooth-voiced “NPR Like” radio hosts. I can usually tolerate them OK, and I think that most MBEs have some good interview segments. This one just rubbed me the wrong way. Let me know if you pick up any unnecessary arrogance or smarm in the interview.

American Music Club- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 1993 VHS Hifi-DAT Audio Live Studio

One from my collection today. It looks like this one might be online already but with no lineage info. This is a DAT transferred off the VHS Hifi audio master, which is a smart way to timer tape audio back in the day.

This is a really good performance and funny interview.

Movie Stars- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Show, Santa Monica 7/30/90 xfer from 1st gen audio tape

This tape comes from my collection of 4,000 cassettes that need to get done. Myke from KCRW is archiving all of their older shows and found some stuff that the station didn’t have, so my posts will be KCRW heavy in the near future.
Movie Stars were one of my favorite bands in the early 1990s. I would follow them all over the bay/Sacramento area and tape their shows. They needed a fan to photograph shows, too- there are no pictures of the band online. You get the generic HoaP photo for this post. Maybe Linda Champagne has some pics she can share.
