The Bottle Rockets- Best Buy, Ellisville Mo 3/4/95 xfer f/DAT Soundboard Clone Alt Country Americana

Here’s the last alt country “On This Day” for a bit. If you haven’t heard The Bottle Rockets, you need to check them out. Brian’s vocals are an acquired taste, but perfect for the band’s rural mid-western vibe. This is such a great set- recorded shortly after the release of their album “The Brooklyn Side”, it has all of my favorite songs.
If you are a fan of good songwriting and excellent clever lyrics, this is a good place to be. Unfortunately, they hung it up a few years back. I wish I could see them play again.
The tape sounds great except for some distortion early on as the person recording the set deals with recording levels.
How odd is this venue, by the way? They played a Best Buy. With the radio DJ introducing the band before they start, it makes me wonder if this was a radio broadcast… but it doesn’t have that overly compressed FM sound. Fun Fact: that Best Buy closed in 2012.

Red Krayola- Ciceros, St. Louis Mo 1/11/95 xfer from DAT Master Clone Soundboard Rebalanced Mayo T

Here’s something completely different to kick off your Monday. This one is from Jim Utz’ collection. Jim and I started trading tapes in 1986 have have remained good friends to this day. When I bought my DAT in 1991 and started recording some pretty nice board tapes, Jim invested in one as well and started taping around the St. Louis area. His home base was Cicero’s basement bar and he even released an official CD with songs from some of these recordings, called “The Basement Recordings – Live At Cicero’s”. It’s out of print, but there are copies available for $8 on discogs. Thanks Jim!
Anyway, the Red Krayola Wiki asked for this one to be digitized a while back and this flyer comes from their database of stuff.

Eagles- Riverport Amphitheater, St. Louis Mo 7/6/94 xfer from DAT soundboard clone 2nd set

If you saw my “About the Sac Music Archive” videos, I mentioned that when I started trading DATs in the early 90s, I was able to get some really rare and amazing audio. A lot of it has been officially released by now, but this On This Date in History project has helped me figure out what is still uncirculated, vs. being on youtube already or being officially released.
I don’t see this one out there, surprisingly. nice quality board tape from the Hell Freezes Over tour.

Small Ball Paul- Bastille’s, St. Louis Mo 4/22/94 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Cicero’s

For today’s On This Date in History, I had a few choices. I could have done the Amps from Gibson’s in Tempe, but that would have required a VHS transfer and that takes a lot of time. I could have posted my DAT soundboard master tape of Pavement at Great American Music Hall in 1994, but I am already posting audio today so this one it is. Yet another one from Jim Utz’ collection of VHS tapes I digitized years ago.
Small Ball Paul was a band from St. Louis who released a couple of demos and a 7″ on Faye Records (home of one of my all time favorites, Ditch Witch). They were then signed by a subsidiary of a major label (Thirsty Ear), put out 1 EP and 1 album produced by the legendary Lou Giordano, then called it a day.
This was recorded 1 week before I flew into St. Louis for Uncle Tupelo’s final 2 shows at Mississippi Nights.
One last thing- newspapers dot com shows this show at Cicero’s, and it sure looks like cicero’s. Did it change names?

Coffee Creek- Cicero’s, St. Louis Mo. 7/30/93 xfer f/band archive soundboard rebalance Uncle Tupelo

My long time friend Steve Brothers asked me about getting a wav file of the coffee creek shows, so I went ahead and gave it the full rebalance treatment.
Here is the text from my original(non-rebalanced) post:
First and foremost- this is a MUST LISTEN if you are an Uncle Tupelo, WIlco, Son Volt, or classic country fan. Coffee Creek are Tweedy/Farrar/Heidorn(Uncle Tupelo), Brian Henneman(Bottle Rockets) doing classic country/rock covers! So great.

Back in the early 90s, I was friends with Tony Margherita & Bob Andrews who managed Uncle Tupelo, The Bottle Rockets and many more. I had followed UT around and filmed/audio recorded over 10 shows in the span of a couple of years, including the 2 final shows in St. Louis. Since the band was defunct (and Wilco was not the HUGE band they are today), Tony let my good friend Jim stop by and pick up “a few” cassettes in late 1994. Jim goes to the office and calls me:
J(whispering): Dude, there are like 50 tapes here. Do you have Coffee Creek?
Me: No
J: How about X(some other one)
Me: No. Just grab them all and I will sort them out.
So Jim grabs a box and shoves about 50 tapes in, and takes off. Bob and Tony were like :-O. Haha! Thanks guys.
I am shocked that these are not online yet.

Uncle Tupelo- Blue Note, Columbia Mo. 11/13/92 xfer f/ Hi8 Master Video Tape w/ DAT Audio Live

Here is the last UT show from the November of 1992 run that I taped. I was supposed to go to Kansas City the next night and then drive 12 hours straight through the night to catch my plane in Chicago, but my body told me that wasn’t going to happen. I went to the Didjits show with Jim Utz instead.
Anyway, I got to Columbia in the early afternoon and tried to find a liquor store for some beer. I saw this place with the sign “Liquor Guns and Ammo”, so I went in and saw that they only had lousy beer, so I bailed. It didn’t even occur to me until years later the store I was in was probably the same one described in UT’s song “Whiskey Bottle”. Duh.
I conked out before the show and got there a little late. I get in the club and it is PACKED. Like, sold out packed… and I am late and I have no place to film. I had to wedge myself between some people and use my tripod like a monopod- hanging it over the railing on the balcony a bit to get a clear shot. I think it still turned out pretty good. The only downside of that approach was the DAT recording. I could not tend to the DAT so the battery dies during the last song, so you get crappy stock camera audio for that one.

Here is the most complete document of the legendary Coffee Creek- this show has a few cuts, but appears to be mostly complete. Coffee Creek were a side project of Uncle Tupelo (Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweddy, Mike Heidorn) plus Brian Henneman from the Bottle Rockets.

btw, I know that this ticket stub is for the other Coffee Creek show I posted (7/30/93). I should have used this image for that show, and the coffee cup (which I have been searching for, for many years) image for this show. Oh well. Uncle Tupelo- KDHX “High Anxiety” Radio Show St. Louis 3/9/91 Master Audio cassette-DAT Int Acoustic

Alright, Day 1 of ALL collections, all the time! This one comes from my collection with a bit of a backstory. I have told the story of my friend Jim Utz going to the Tony Margherita Management office and borrowing about 50 Uncle Tupelo archive tapes(it is on a coffee creek post if you want to read the story). Tony & Bob from TMM had this KDHX session in the band archive but it was incomplete- 1 version edited for acoustic songs only, 1 cut off at 50 minutes.
Then we were graciously loaned Doug Morris’ archive of cassettes and we digitized as many as possible before returning them. I think this is where this version came from. Digitized by Michael Pemberton or Steve Brothers. It’s nice to enjoy a complete version of this one.
