Alex Chilton- 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis Mn 1/23/00 xfer from DAT Clone Big Star Michael Jackson

I realize that my Alex Chilton posts are usually met with apathy, but if you have time to listen to one of them, listen to this one. One of the best AC performances ever, including a “cover” of a Big Star song(it’s his song) and a Michael Jackson cover! The setlist image for the post/yt video appears to only be for the second set. Alex is clearly enjoying himself- he rarely plays this long of a set.. lots of great banter with the audience and a great set list.

Son Volt- Cites 97 KTCZ Interview and Live Acoustic in-Studio, Minneapolis Mn 8/4/97 Master tape-DAT

Here’s a nice On This Date to start your week- nice and mellow. I love when the enthusiastic interviewer tries to get Jay to recount his favorite moment from the previous day’s show. Sir, do you even know who you are talking to? LOL. Boquist came to the rescue on that one and Jay was more talkative than usual.

Sounds great, I think I got this from Mark Janovec. He was/is THE MAN for all things uncle tupelo related in mpls.

Audio Live Performance

Soul Asylum- Choice Rocks Benefit, First Avenue, Minneapolis Mn 1/22/96 xfer from DAT Clone

I was turned on to Soul Asylum by an old tape trading friend (Katie Dee, Buffalo NY!) in 1988 and have been a huge fan ever since… especially of the 1986-1990 era. They were untouchable then. I just checked the tape list and I have ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SEVEN live tapes of the band. So, why don’t I post them more often? Well, there are some big fans out there who have done a great job of getting their concerts online, and they have a very good facebook group to discuss the band. When I post there, people are like “who the heck is THIS guy” lol. Many of the shows I have are already online, shoutout to the “littletooclean” channel.
Anyway, I am pretty sure I got this from the guy who taped it. That guy might be Mark Janovec, but I don’t recall him having the type of mics that produce this (low end heavy) type of recording. This was part of a “choice rocks” benefit, which might be a rock for choice thing? There is nothing online about it at all. I just happened to get lucky and find an image of the concert shirt.

Audio Live Concert

Boiled in Lead- KTCA Public TV Showcase, Minnepolis MN Mid-1990s xfer from Master VHS Tape

Here’s the last one for the weekend, from my collection. I have been getting back into digitizing the older videos I have- I still have a backlog of 4k multicamera videos I could post…
I snagged this one off ebay for virtually no money and then a Boiled in Lead completist messaged me, asking for a transfer. How did the guy even get my info? Along those lines, whoever got the Circle Jerks umatic or any other russ gibb archive tape, let me know. I would be happy to digitize it for you.

Devo- First Avenue, Minneapolis Mn. 11/2/88 xfer f/DAT Clone Schoeps mics complete

Another one from my collection for today’s On This Date in History. I got this one back in the DAT trading days and it remains one of the better audience recordings I have heard. Wow! I don’t recall a prominent taper in the area with Schoeps mics… Mark Janovec used a sony mic (I think) and I don’t think J. Free had schoeps. Whoever it was did one hell of a job. Surprised this isn’t on YT yet.
