Metallica- Forum, Inglewood Ca 2/12/92 Complete show Lossless xfer from 8mm master

Here’s another Metallica video from Barry Goldstein. I posted his Metallica from January 1992 a couple weeks back. The timing of these shows is confusing. So, Metallica played in January and then came back to the same venue a month later? I have never heard of such a thing unless it was a make-up date due to cancellation.
This one seems to be shot a bit closer than the January one. I denoised this one but it is still a bit grainy. I didn’t want to overprocess it and make it look like one of those blurred over selfies folks post.
YT’s ridiculous AI identified a few songs as being officially released (from totally different venues and dates!) so I had to trim them out in order to unblock this one. So, if you see cuts, that’s why.

Metallica- Hemisfair Arena, San Antonio Tx 1/22/92 Xfer f/ VHS Master Rock the World Cable Broadcast

I wasn’t planning on posting this today- I was going to do a Four Eyes multicam from a recent show but I could not find it in my youtube drafts, so I filtered on them.. holy crap, there is some stuff that I meant to post a LONG time ago, including 1 last Tour Manager Doug tape! Expect some of that next week.

This one is from a VHS tape that my friend Craig Hilmer sent me over 30 years ago. He taped a few segments off of the local San Antonio community cable show back then and mailed them over. Even though it was broadcast on community cable, it seems that this one is not out there- at least not on youtube. Don’t get too excited- even though it sounds good, most of the video is shot off the video screen so quality ain’t great.

Stay tuned for more from this tape. There is even a cool segment with some local San Antonio bands from around that time.

Metallica- The Forum, Inglewood Ca 1/7/92 xfer from 8mm master tape Black Album Tour complete show

We have a new contributor to the archive! My old friend Erik F sent me a couple of boxes of 8mm master tapes to digitize over the past 6 months, but I was not sure if it was OK to post them. Erik just came back and let me know that the shows were filmed by Barry Goldstein and we are good to start posting them.
The first one is one of 2 Metallica shows from early 1992 that Barry filmed. I see other versions of this show on youtube, but I think this is a different angle/source. This was back when they had the tapers section and people could bring their recording devices. This one is about 3min longer than the other one posted. This one has a substantial amount of the early part of the show filmed off the video screen.
Also, I think that this concert poster image I found online to use for the facebook posts is bogus, but I could not find a legit one.

Live Performance Video

Metallica- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca. 12/12/88

My friend Gary Shurtleff let me know that this was just posted, and I have a funny story about this show. I *really* wanted to tape the show, but I did not have a decent audio recorder at the time. I borrowed my friend’s (anonymous) crappy audio recorder and snuck it in. While I was taping metallica, I got busted by the usher. She grabbed me firmly by the arm and walked me down to the main security. They took my recorder, but I pocketed the tape before I gave it up. I got the tape home and it was complete distortion.

So yesterday, a listenable recording of the same show pops up. I have no idea who taped it- it doesn’t sound like a Karl Lundmark tape. But here you go- Metallica on the AJFA tour.

Metallica- San Francisco Civic 12/31/85 xfer from low (1st) gen audio cassette

It seems that the Metallica completists have found the sacramento music archive. I received 2 messages asking for this show, along with 2 other tapes that appear to be uncirculated. Those other 2 will take a while (I have A LOT of people I neglected and need to get back to), but here is the new year’s show.
The origin of this tape is kind of a mystery. I vaguely remember Mark Martin telling me that he taped this, but the writing on this tape is not his, and it came from his collection that I acquired in the 80s. It kinds looks like “tour manager Doug”‘s writing, and the sound of the tape sounds like one of his as well. So, this is probably 1st gen, might be a master.. who knows.

It’s election day AND Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Get out and vote, and try not to OD on the endless political talking head news programs going on today. We won’t know results until tonight at best, so I suggest you spend your time doing something positive rather than worrying about the outcome.
This tape would have been super exciting if we digitized it 10 years ago, as it was a true rarity back then. Since then, Metallica released a soundboard of this show on the Ride the Lightning box set… anyway, here it is for the completists.

Metallica- Master of Puppets Instrumental Rehearsals 1985 xfer from unknown gen audio cassette

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday!
This one has been in draft mode on the youtube channel for 5 months. Since it was hissy and a little sped up, I wasn’t sure if it was worth posting. I also did a quick check Shazam back then and Disposable Heroes came up as already being on the Master of Puppets box set, so I assumed this was already released. I came back to it this morning and performed a deeper check on it, and the rest do not seem to be released. There is so much Metallica out there, it was hard to know if this was unique. So I figured what the hell, let’s post it and the hardcore fans/collectors will tell me if it is anything special.
I have one more Tour Manager Doug tape for next week, and that’s it.. unless he gives me more tapes.

Kill ‘Em All (Metallica)- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca. 7/20/84 xfer from master audio cassette

I am pretty excited about this project. Tour Manager Doug- the source of MANY (most?) of the early bay area thrash metal audio recordings sent me a box of about 80 tapes last week. There are so many of his early metal recordings in there that have never circulated, it’s mind-blowing. Historic box of tapes.
I have digitized the first 10 tapes so far. You can expect a couple of these and a couple KALX tapes in the upcoming weekdays. Wayne V’s stuff will make a comeback in a bit- thanks Wayne! Wayne introduced us and helped get this project started. Thanks to Doug for trusting me with this goldmine of stuff.
I figured that I would post the tape that I enjoyed the most so far. A secret show by the band Kill ‘Em All, which was code for Metallica. Killer drunken show, complete with Ness Aquino yelling at the crowd to get off the speakers! The image for this recording also came from Doug’s collection- he has the original sign that was on the Mab’s door that night.
I EQ’d the hell out of this one to drop some of the highs and boost bass. The extreme bass boost caused some low end noise- I might try to Izotope that out. Sounds good enough for me.

Metallica- KUSF Rampage Radio 1984 Andy Andersen interviews Lars, who is impersonating Kerry King

Whew, that was a mouthful of a title, but the description is exactly what this is. It one comes from the Wayne Vanderkuil archive and is cringeworthy but hilarious. “Why do you wear so many nails- are you in construction or something?” I miss Andy’s one-liners.
There is a second segment where Lars impersonates Appolonia- this one was kinda lost on me since I don’t know the reference. I assume it is Apollonia Kotero?
Anyway, listen to this one quick- I would not be surprised if Andy, Harald, Ron or any of the other KUSF regulars want this pulled down. I personally think this is AWESOME. One of the best parodies of Slayer that I have ever heard.
