Luna- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 4/3/94 xfer from DAT Master Dean Wareham

I lived in Whitter, Ca from Sep of 1992 through November of 1995. I loved the fact that I could see a bunch of shows in driving distance from my house- I could see some bands play 3x: Hollywood, Long Beach, and San Juan Capistrano or San Diego. It was awesome. One of the downsides to living in Whitter was that I would get spotty reception to the college radio stations. I taped this one myself and it had a bunch of radio static. I was able to de-static most of it without making it sound overprocessed. If I tried to push it more, it sounds odd.
Classic Luna performance on KCRW, before the station started archiving performances online.

Audio Live Performance

Luna- Warfield, San Francisco Ca 3/19/93 xfer from DAT Master Audience Galaxie 500 Nakamichi CM300

I didn’t have much time to play around with remixing this one (5 hours of meetings before noon!)- this is totally flat right off the DAT. The bass is a little boomy, but sounds pretty decent for a recording from the balcony.

Audio Live Concert

Luna- Coach House, San Juan Capistrano Ca 11/4/92 Hi8 Master xfer Enhanced w/DAT Audio Galaxie 500

Here is a show that I posted before, but it was the raw hi8 tape with the camera’s audio. This time, I took the superior DAT audio and synched it up with Pluraleyes 4. plus, I cleaned up what little grain there was in Adobe Elements/Neat Video.
Unfortunately, my DAT battery decided to croak on me about 10min into the show, so this version is only 24min long- the first 10 and last 15min of the show. I will also post the full enhanced version of the show with camera audio in a bit.

Luna- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca. 11/7/92 Transfer from Hi8 Master for first time Ever!

It was strange. Every time I went to Bogart’s, something bizarre and memorable happened. One time, it was when Uncle Tupelo played there and broke their snare on the first song and had a huge delay waiting for another. Another time, it was Penelope Houston and meeting Todd Nakamine, and we have been friend ever since. Or this one- Dean Wareham mentions this show in his “Black Postcards” book, because a guy in the front row was so irritating that he agreed to fight at the end of the set. Like I said, bizarre. The vibe of the club just seemed to invite it.

Luna- Whisky a Go Go, Hollywood Ca. 11/5/92 Part 1 Dean Wareham Direct Xfer from hi8 Master

This is one of only 2 times that I paid a club money to videotape. The Whisky’s policy was $50 to tape. I was (am) such a huge Luna fan, I could not resist. I plunked down the cash and still don’t regret it. Great set, and the best sounding Luna show I have. Taped with the Sony TR81.

Live Concert Video

Luna- Coach House, San Juan Capistrano Ca 11/4/92 Hi8 Master Live Video xfer Enhanced

I am going to try to post a 4k video from last night’s show, but it shows “processing HD version” 8 hours into the upload, so it may be late. Here is an early “bonus post” of a Luna show I taped back in 1992. This is the 3rd and last version I am posting. This is the complete show with the stock camera audio, enhanced to remove the graininess. Enjoy!

Live Concert Video

Luna- Khyber Pass Pub, Philadelphia Pa. 10/19/92 xfer from 1st gen audio tape

Here is the last concert on the DAT with firehose’s last show and Luna’s KCRW performance. At this show, Dean gets a bottle thrown at him- you can hear him end the show abruptly, mid-song but they come back and finish the set. Man, Philly is a tough town- they live up to their reputation.

Audio Live Concert

Luna- Maxwell’s, Hoboken Nj 2/22/92 DAT Clone xfer 2nd show ever Dean Wareham Galaxie 500

It wasn’t easy getting a post ready for today. The original audio I had prepared would not read from the disc, so I will need to recapture that one. This one was next and Stanley’s drumming dominated the recording, so I rebalanced it… and totally buried the vocals. This is the second rebalance attempt (an hour processing each) and the vocals are still buried but it sounds as good as it is going to get.
I remember getting these in trade from taper Jim Romeo right when they happened and being so excited to hear the new songs.

Luna and Babes in Toyland- San Antonio Community Cable 1992 xfer f/master VHS tape Interview & Live

My video transfer setup is still giving me trouble, so let’s pull this one out for today. You should get a Chris Eng video tomorrow- and it is a rare one! I hope I can keep up with this “collections video every day” thing. Lossless capture has been finicky and it is time consuming when it goes well… I think it is time to stand up a 2nd lossless capture setup.

Craig Hilmer taped this off TV when he lived in San Antonio and mailed it to me back in 1992. Really neat interview and live footage. Are there any other video interviews of Luna from this time frame? I don’t recall seeing one.
