KZAP- Sacramento Living Library Event, Time Tested Books, Sacramento 4/17/11 xfer f/ DV Master Tape

Here is another video today, from Dennis Newhall’s collection. I might try to set a record today with not one, not two… but THREE video posts. I can’t remember the last time that happened!
This one isn’t actual music, but they definitely talk about music and Sacramento/KZAP history!

Here is the Sacramento News and Review’s blurb about the event, published back in 2011:
“For Sacramentans of a certain age range, there was only ONE radio station that mattered: 98.5 KZAP.
From its freeform beginnings to its hard rock heyday, KZAP was Sacramento’s soundtrack for nearly 25 years. Join well known radio personalities Bob Hughson, Bob Keller, Dennis Newhall and Robert Williams for a look back at the valley’s much beloved rock station. And a bit of advice: show up early if you want a seat, I think this one is gonna be big.”

The audio is not the best- you can understand what the panel is saying, but there is some light distortion. There is also some A/V synch issues later in the event. Still an interesting watch!

KZAP Airchecks and Eddie Money Interview 8/15/79 xfer from radio station archive tape

It’s time for mediocre monday. I snagged this and another old KZAP item off ebay about a month ago. The sound quality is surprisingly lacking- I thought it would sound good at least.
Anyway, good for those of you nostalgic for the days of old KZAP. I will try to get the other KZAP one ready soon, but it is seizing up in the tape deck.

KZAP- Gordo’s Commercial Reel #29, Sacramento Ca 9/13 to 10/24/78 xfer from master reel

Here is a real treat for you KZAP and Sacramento history fans, and a big WTF for the rest of you probably. Haha. This is part of Dennis Newhall’s collection of tapes he dropped with me. Back in the old days, instead of everything being digital and an easy button push, you actually had to cue up LP’s to play on the radio. When it was time for a commercial, you had to cue up the commercial on the reel to reel deck.
This is a reel of over 40 commercials from back in the 70s. You get to hear from local favorites like the Shire Road Pub, Sacramento Raceway, Oasis Ballroom, and Jumbo Market. I listened to the entire thing while digitizing it- it’s a lot of fun and pulled some very nice memories for me.

KZAP- Gordo’s Radio Show 1/11/78, Sacramento includes Commercials xfer f/Studio Tape

We have a new collection to share today. I want to thank Dennis Newhall for bringing a box of tapes over for digitizing.
A little background: I started taping shows in the mid-80’s and the era before that (60’s-1980) has always been a black hole for the archive- I knew of no one who had tapes from then. Dennis’ tapes will shed some light into that era and I can’t thank him enough for dropping these by.
The first one is a 90-minute segment of Gordon C. Styler’s (Gordo)’s show on KZAP on 1/11/78. I try not to get too giddy about this stuff, but this is an incredible blast of nostalgia- back when DJ’s clearly made their own programming decisions. Live show announcements at around the 21:00 mark is a great way to understand where live music was happening here in 1978. Black Angus had music? Wow.
The original commercials are a blast as well. Midnight movies ad at around 30:00 made me smile.
I hope my Sacramento friends enjoy this as much as I did.
