Here’s something a few people might like. Here is Radiohead’s set, sandwiched in between Garbage (played before) and Wesley Willis (played after radiohead wth?). Sounds great and a nice performance.
Over the next few weeks, you will be getting full sets of all bands who played the KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, directly off of the DAT master tape. Why? Well, audio to video synch wizard king bean asked for a couple of sets from the weekend of shows, and it just made sense to run the entire set of DATs and archive then now…. especially since they were DIC brand (a little taper humor for the nerds out there). I moved back to Sacramento over Thanksgiving weekend of 1995, and this took place a month afterwards. HUGE thanks to Kevin Haynes for taping this for me, and then sending the DAT masters to me. What a guy.

This is my favorite set out of the 20ish sets over 2 nights. You have about 7,000 people in the place, ready to see Bush, Alanis Morrissette, Foo Fighters and more. Then Kevin and Bean spring an unknown (at the time) Wesley Willis on the unsuspecting crowd, most/all of the crowd have never heard of this guy. If you are unaware of Wesley, he was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic as a child. He sold his pen and paper artwork on the streets of Chicago, and then got into music. His stream-of-consciousness lyrics spoken/sung over the casio keyboard’s demo song is the basis for most of the early material I have heard (he has a ton of material!). Anyway, back to the KROQ event. He plays his first song, and the place is dead silent! It was probably the biggest “WTF?” moment in the history of acoustic xmas. So great. I can’t help but laugh every time I hear this.

Haha, KROQ botched the bio for Joan. They talked about her being from Anchorage ALASKA on night 1, and they announce her as being from Alaska on night 2. She is from Anchorage, Kentucky… that “other” Anchorage. Too funny. Anyway, here it is. Not my thing, hope you like it.

I realized that some of the Acoustic Xmas sets from 1994 are not online. I taped the entire thing (interviews, commercials and all) with the DAT when I lived in Whittier for a few years.
Here is a fantastic Meat Puppets set. I love that they didn’t go up and play the hits. They did play the 2 songs that Nirvana did on the unplugged set, but they also did Pee Pee the Sailor (Paul Leary/Butthole Surfers) and Sloop John B (Beach Boys). One of the more memorable sets from 94, for sure.
Speaking of the 94 Almost Acoustic Xmas, Patreon voters are voting for another set to be shared next week. If you want in on the fun, link to sign up is below as well.

It’s Patreon Voter’s Choice time! Like I said last week, the Sac Music Archive patrons have great taste. Out of NINE(!) KROQ Sets from 12/10, this is probably the best one. You never know what you are going to get from JAMC, and this was a good one. If you want to be part of the Patreon party, I’ll put the link below. Donations are tax deductible.
hmmm… what should the vote be this week? Still undecided.

This one is hard to listen to. During the interview before their performance, shannon sang an xmas song but changed the lyrics to be a “funny” drug/heroin based song. Less than 2 years later, he was dead of an OD.
Over the next few weeks (weekdays), I will be posting sets from the 1993 Almost Acoustic Xmas. On the night of Dec 11th, I was driving to grab dinner for the family and I turn on KROQ and I hear that they were broadcasting the entire show live on the radio! I listened to KROQ regularly back then and did not recall any advertising for the broadcast. I hauled ass back home and grabbed a DAT and started recording. I was broke back then, so I have these sets scattered over about 5 DATs. I think I only lost a couple minutes of one set due to tape change- General Public. I even was able to edit in the interviews from other sections of the tape. The Blind Melon interview is a sad foreshadow of their future. Anyway, hope you enjoy these. I became a fan of at least a few of these bands through this broadcast.

A couple bands played both nights at the acoustic xmas 1993 event- I think The Cranberries and Belly were the only 2. Here is night 2 from The Cranberries.

I’m listening to this again and trying to figure out what the hell is going on– it looks like Primus took the stage as Bob Cock and the Yellow Sock.. and it sounds like they at least tried to play acoustic. I read that this incarnation of the band plays lounge versions of Primus songs. Interesting.
