Yo La Tengo- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 6/20/95 xfer f/DAT FM Master Live Studio

I mentioned this before, but it’s relevant to the post today. I lived in Whittier California from 1992-1995 and didn’t go to nearly enough concerts since I was raising a family. I was also just outside of a decent signal for KCRW, so anything I taped there would be super staticky.
Thankfully, my good friend Kevin Haynes lives closer to the station and was able to get a nice signal. I would call him on occasion (no email for me back then) and ask him to tape certain things.. and that is the only reason that this tape exists. It’s a full session with them playing live in studio, preceding their show at the Alligator show that night. So, thanks to Kevin for this one.

The Walkabouts- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca live in studio 6/19/95 xfer f/1st gen cassette

One from my collection today. This was part of my KCRW digitizing prject that I did for the station a couple months back. It’s also my first post to the pacific northwest music facebook group after getting the old account disabled. I had over 100 posts under my old profile. Ugh, there goes my top contributor badge.

Wilco- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic,Santa Monica Ca 5/12/95 xfer from DAT Clone Interview and Live

It always amazes me when I search on youtube- so many obscure things are out there and posted 10 different ways, and then I check on something like this. You would think this would be common, but I only see 1 track from this session up there and with no lineage. Here’s the entire 40 minute thing.

May 1995 was a good time to be a Wilco fan in southern cal. They played 4 times in 48 hours- this is the first performance, then at the Whisky that night. They played the next day during the day- noon maybe? at Rhino Records in Westwood, and finally at Galaxy Concert Theater (now The Observatory) in Santa Ana. I was at all of them. Except for this one obviously.

I need to synch up my high quality DAT audio with RG’s video of the Rhino Records in store when I get time.

Pizzicato Five- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 4/28/95 xfer from 1st gen audio tape

Here’s a short one for today’s On This Date in History. Why did I pick this one? Convenience. It was already digitized as part of the KCRW project. Sorry, haha. It’s only 3 minutes long, so low time investment needed.

Poster Children- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 4/14/95 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette

It was my turn in the rotation for an audio post from my collection and it’s been a while since I posted something from the batch of KCRW tapes I digitized for the station a year or so back.

I think this was during the time that ML was managing them. I think I saw him at the Troubadour when the band played there around this time.

Sid Griffin and the Coal Porters- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica 3/23/95 Long Ryders xfer f/1st

Ah, finally back in the studio. I only spent about 20 minutes in here over the past week. Time to play catch up.

This one is from my collection. I digitized a bunch of stuff for the KCRW archives last year and never did anything with them. Expect a KCRW related post about once every few weeks.

I got to see this band once. They were opening for Kevn Kinney and Peter Buck at Paradise Lounge in SF. I had never heard their music before and they blew me away. It was hard to sit there with a video camera in the bag and not pull it out. Those were the days of expensive tapes and battery packs. Plus I didn’t have permission. It would have been a total bummer to get tossed from the club before Kevn and Peter came on.

Echobelly- KCRW Brave New World Live in Studio 12/3/94 xfer from DAT Clone

I was planning to post something else from this DAT and I came across this. It’s not on my list and not even labeled on the DAT. I went into sleuth mode and found out that the show they announced (Echobelly/Velocity Girl at the Roxy) took place on Wednesday 12/7/94, the Brave New World show took place on Sunday night, so I think that this is 12/3.
Being in Whittier at the time, I was just out of reception for KCRW. Huge thanks for Kevin Haynes (wherever he is) for documenting so much alternative and indie stuff in the mid 90s.

Sebadoh- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 10/7/94 xfer from DAT clone of master

Here’s another great recording from Kevin Haynes’ unsurfaced collection of recordings. He was a good friend back then- he and Todd Nakamine were my closest friends during my 3 years in Whittier. I hope he is doing well.
I was planning on posting a multicamera video but we found an issue with it so we had to scrap and re-do. I just happened to find this on my hard drive- I digitized it 2 years ago. Lou has some great one-liners in here. Full band in studio.

Kristin Hersh- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 9/29/94 DAT Master Clone Throwing Muses

Happy Monday everyone! I am taking a break from the KROQ Acoustic Xmas daily posts for a few days to bring a little more variety. First one is from another L.A.- area broadcast, recorded by Kevin Haynes. This is an interview and album tracks only, no in studio performance.
