I saw Matt Oneillin(sp?) before this Soul Glo Harlow’s show and asked him if he was doing sound for the show tonight– he does sound at the Cafe and I knew JT was out for the day. Nope, he is in the band Oxy and they were playing! I had no idea he was in a band, and I have only seen him at work where he is pretty quiet and reserved. Who knew he was a hardcore madman vocalist? Very entertaining.

Through some miracle of technology, this one uploaded and Youtube rendered it to 4K overnight. It has been a long time since I have seen a crowd react so positively to a local opening band opening for a touring act. Most people come to these shows to see the headliner, and I think I can safely assume that most have never heard the local opener. People went nuts over the Me Gustas, dancing during the songs. It was really nice to see, couldn’t happen to nicer guys. PS: They have an album out, GREAT cover artwork!

This one has a long dumb story. I was planning to shoot a multicamera of this one, since one of my all time favorite musicians, Kurt Bloch was on drums for this tour. That did not work out. First, I had trouble leaving on time- work got in the way and I did not have my gear organized for multicamera. I scrambled together some stuff, and left with enough time to arrive, get permission, set up and film. Well, I forgot my rode mic at home so I had to go back and grab it, which cost me time. I had planned to arrive at the show at 7pm (doors), but I did not get there until 7:40. Then, I went to grab my bags and run out of the car, and I can’t find my fcking car keys. I burn more time digging around the car and find them on the floor, wedged between the center console and the driver’s seat. So I am finally charging my way up to the door and I see Steven King and Cory Vick. I have that “deer in the headlights” look in my eyes at this point and ask them if they know when the Minus 5 are going on. We don’t know so I got to the club and Steven introduced me to John Ramberg. I got the ok to tape and I ask when they are going on- they go on in 5 minutes! Holy sht- multicam is out of the question at this point. I go to the soundboard to plug in and John Taylor (king of sound at Harlow’s) is super patient with me and gets me set up. I go to pull the Sony M10 out and power it on… no batteries. Kill me. I had given up any hope of a board tape when I realized that I have an extra video camera, so I pull that out and use it to record the soundboard audio. After all of this, they performed without a drummer- Kurt did not perform due to illness- get well soon my friend. Despite all of the chaos, it was an awesome show. 10/10 would do it again. oh, and to all of my northwest friends- this NRBQ/Minus 5 show is a must see – pick up tickets for Saturday if you can!

A couple of months back, we went to Harlow’s to see MC5 and Very Paranoia. The MC5 multicam set was posted over at Jim McLain’s channel, so go check that out if you haven’t already. This is the opening set from Very Paranoia. They feature members of Annihilation Time, Hot Lunch, Leacherous Gaze and Sonic Love Affair (SLA). Thanks to Jim McLain for the soundboard audio and Anonymous for the Schoeps recording and the matrix.

Here is a companion video to the Jim McLain and my multicamera collaboration of this show that was posted at @Jim McLain (Taperjim) ‘s channel about a month ago. His post is a 1080 multicamera with matrix audio. This one is just my angle, in 4k with a different Matrix audio track. Thank to Jim for sending over the board mix and to Anonymous for taping with Schoeps and putting the audio track together. So, in summary, head to McLain’s channel to watch the multicam. Stick around here if you want 4k.

Here’s a bonus post for you today. Last month, MC5 came to town and Jim McLain and I were there to film. I contributed 1 angle (the moving angle shot from straight on) and Jim did all the rest- shot the rest of the angles, took care of audio and editing. Thanks Jim!
