Fairport Convention- Palms, Davis Ca. 3/18/98 2nd Set Xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Tape

Fairport came back to the Palms about 18 months later and they let me record again. When a big/legendary band lets you tape, there is a lot of pressure/stress to make sure you don’t screw anything up. I was plugged into the board and ready to record the show… and my DAT decides to die. It was working fine before! So, while Fairport played their first set, I was sweating and trying to get the damned recorder to work. There is an audience recording of that set if anyone wants to hear it. There was a guy from Auburn(I forget his name) who let me borrow a DAT to record the second set. Thank you, wherever you are now!

Fairport Convention- Palms, Davis Ca. 10/16/96 Xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Tape

This show was such a thrill for me. I have been a huge Fairport fan since the mid-80’s and this was my first time seeing them. The old Palms was truly special- a tiny barn next to a house in Davis. I was able to ask Simon Nicol for permission to record and I was thrilled (and surprised) that he said yes! He just asked that I don’t bootleg it… and of course, there is some jackass on ioffer bootlegging it now. Man I hate bootleggers.

Fairport Convention- Karlshmann Fest, Sweden 6/17/95 xfer from DAT Master Clone FM Soundboard

I had a lot of stuff to choose from for today’s On This Date in History, but I felt like hearing this one. It was mislabeled as Germany on the tape list, but I searched around online and discovered that this fest actually takes place in Sweden. Nice sounding FM broadcast.
Fun Fact- Black Sabbath played this same fest in 1995. I wonder if a DAT FM recording exists of that set? I don’t have it unfortunately.

Fairport Convention- Alexander Teatret, Copenhagen Denmark 4/4/86 Sony D5 2x Sony ECM150 Master xfer

Today’s on this day in history goes out to Ken Dixon, who had a recent health scare. When I posted the Arlo Guthrie tape last weekend, he responded (from the hospital) with “Folk You!”. Glad to know he was feeling better, haha.

So, Folk You all again. I get all geeky excited with tapes like this- this was probably recorded by a deadhead, as they were the ones who had the best gear. The Sony TCD-D5 was THE best cassette deck for taping. It was huge but perfect for producing high quality live recordings. The cassette master tape was bounced to DAT and I have a 1st clone of that. Sounds great!

The venue is confusing. The tape was labeled ALEXANDRA CULTURE CLUB, COPENHAGEN DENMARK. When I look that up online, I am told it is a hotel. I did some further digging and I think it is this place. Maybe, maybe not.

Man, I have not seen Fairport since 1998. I really need to get to Cropredy before they hang it up.
