It’s Tour Manager Doug Thursday! I am having one hell of a time signing in to youtube on my desktop pc, so I am typing this out on my phone. Man, I hate using my phone for stuff like this. anyway, here is yet another Slayer show from Doug on that Fall 84 run back east. I still have a lot of slayer to post- trying to get them all up before Slayer’s show here in October.

It’s not a week unless we post a Slayer show from Doug. I found this gem of a picture while I was checking online for a photo or flyer from the show- that’s Doug behind Kerry, holding the Sony Walkman WM-R2. That’s a pretty cool find- thanks to the photographer Ihor Hirak for capturing not only Slayer, but Doug and the recorder. I am currently digitizing the rest of the sets from this canada run- including opening bands- some great stuff upcoming.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! I EQ’d this one a while back and I thought it sounded great, and it does sound nice and full but there is no/very little snare drum in the mix. Maybe I need to give this the izotope treatment and repost. Anyway, here is Doug’s recording of Razor in their prime. I bought the Evil Invaders LP when it was released in 1985 and I never realized that they had released 2 albums before EI… I don’t recall those getting distribution in the US. I loved that EI album, it ripped. I finally got to see them in 2016 at California Death Fest along with Nuclear Assault. Original guitarist Dave Carlo is partially blind, it was pretty amazing to see him perform in person. HUGE thanks to Doug for recording their opening set for Slayer. Like I said, it sounds pretty damn nice. Needs more snare.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! This recording was well-circulated among traders in the 80s. It was so clean, it was listed as a soundboard tape even though it is a Doug audience recording. It’s nice to make a clean transfer of the source tape to EQ it- it sounds pretty good. Doug also sent across a few pages of photos from that 2 night stand in Winnipeg. Wellingtons was a hotel and performance venue, and the band was well cared for. In fact, the liner notes of Hell Awaits makes reference to “MAROUSHKA LIVES IN OUR BRAINS!” — Maroushka worked at the Wellington Hotel, the club was in the basement. There’s your Slayer trivia for the day. Pay attention, there will be a test.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Last month, I posted the first night of Slayer’s residency at Wellington’s in 1984. Here is night 2. The photo comes from Doug and is of Slayer playing at Wellington’s. The audio is a bit tinny, but it is super clean and clear sounding. These shows are legendary- a quote in the liner notes for Hell Awaits has a reference to a worker from this hotel/venue.

Another Doug tape today- a Slayer show to honor Jeff on the date of his passing. Hard to believe it has been 11 years already. I think that Jeff even yells to Doug for a drink at about the 13:30 mark on this recording. It’s one of the band asking… The Verbal Abuse Welington’s opening set was well-circulated in trading circles in the 80s, but I was not aware that they were opening for Slayer. These recordings are so clean that the Verbal Abuse was misrepresented as a board tape back then. Hopefully the EQ and rebalance will help these recordings out a bit- I like how it sounds.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! And I just realized that I don’t have much from Doug prepared to post today. I need to get back on the prep work. Here is one that is from Doug’s collection, but I don’t think he taped it. He probably got it from the taper. This one is longer than the version that is out there on Youtube today. It includes some post-interview music from the DJ, and just wow- what a playlist. I sure wish we had something like this in Sacramento back then. I would have become a DIscharge fan much sooner if I heard this! Interview is incoherent and littered with F-bombs. Beautiful.

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Here’s a rare/obscure one for you. Sinister Witch were a Heavy/Thrash Metal band from Canada, who later changed their name to Cranium. They released an album/demo on cassette only in 1988 which was impossible to find until Cult Metal Classics reissued it on CD 30 years later. SW opened for Slayer at one of those legendary Wellington’s shows, so Doug recorded them. Thanks Doug! Looking at youtube and google, there seems to be a grand total of 0 live recordings of this band. It’s cool to get this type of stuff out there. Enjoy!
