Son Volt- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 11/3/95 xfer f/1st gen audio tape Sony WMD6C Uncle Tupelo Farrar

Man, am I running behind today. Here is today’s On This Date in History.

I wish I could remember who I got this from. This was one of my very late cassette trades, at a time when I was a DAT snob and didn’t trade cassettes with hardly anyone. I was also trying to collect every.single.son volt show at the time. I finally gave up on that project in 1999 I think. There are still hundreds of Son Volt/Wilco tapes to digitize, so stay tuned.

I really liked the tapes the D6 made when it worked properly. There is 1 EQ band that needs to be dropped a bit and the low end boosted up and you usually have a nice result.

Thelonious Monster- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 2/20/93 Xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Bob Forrest

Long-time friend Ross Weyman (traded a ton of Alex Chilton and WXRT tapes with him in the 90s) sent me a box with 3 VHS tapes. This is one of them. This video would not exist, but he politely asked/begged the filmer to get this for him. Looking at youtube, this appears to be the only 1993 full set out there. How cool is that? Thanks Ross!
If you are not familiar with the band, check out the doc “Bob and the Monster”. It’s a good one.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 10/27/87 xfer f/mid to high gen VHS tape

Big thanks to Angelo Bertini for telling me what to do on Patreon! While this video isn’t pristine quality, it seems to be the highest resolution out there. I can’t recall where I got this one- it might have been in a trade with Mike Pritchard. It seems that this was broadcast on community cable- there must be a better copy out there somewhere.

Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 3/28/86 Xfer f/Umatic Master w/Sbd Audio

TLDR version: Tape was damaged, gets better at 5-7min mark.

Collections post first today, and the On This Date is going to be late!
This one comes from my collection. I found this on Ebay years ago- I saw someone selling it and knew exactly what it was. The 9:30 club had a (somewhat legendary) semi professional video system with a Umatic camera and soundboard audio. A bunch of VHS copies hit trading circles back in the 80s of bands like Embrace, Government issue, etc.. so when this came up on Ebay, I wasn’t going to get outbid. Haha.

Then I went to play it on the other umatic machine I had and it would not play- the tape seemed completely damaged and victim of sticky shed syndrome (look it up), so I shelved it. Then, my friend Mark at FET Electronics fixed my good umatic machine and here it is. Would you look at that. Beautiful.

I need to contact the person who has the rest of these.
