GWAR, Prong, Raging Slab, 24-7 Spyz, Sea Hags: Much Music Special at CMJ, New York Live & Int 1989?

It’s Friday, so time for video! Next up is something from Gary Shurtleff’s VHS collection. Not only was he one of the most prolific arena filmers in the 90s, but he traded VHS tapes and got some amazing stuff. It’s kind of funny- every time I go to work on Gary’s tapes, I never know what I am going to find. This time it is an Attitude show that I helped film and never had a good copy.. and this.

Canadian TV network Much Music went to the CMJ Music Fest in 1989 (I think) and profiled 5 bands. The GWAR segment is really good- especially the backstage interview and when they crash the “do drugs belong in rock and roll” panel. Includes a mix of live footage shot from the fest, interviews, and an occasional “official” video for one of the band’s singles.

Very nice quality- must be a low gen VHS copy.

24-7 Spyz- Berkeley Square, Berkeley Ca 6/29/89 full concert post show interview xfer f/master tape

This post was not planned for today, but we just heard the news of the tragic death of P. Fluid, vocalist for 24-7 Spyz. It sounds like a homicide, I hope they find the people responsible.
I did not have much interaction with the band- I asked one of the members if I could videotape in 1989 and they told me no. Thankfully, Jerry Perry along with Brian Mckenna promoted the show, so Jerry video taped the Cattle Club show. It’s up on the archive, thanks to Jerry and Jim Mclain. I was there with the video camera in my bag.
Anyway, this audio tape is from Gary Shurtleff’s collection. He taped the band with his WM-D3 and he also did an after-show interview with them that is here after their set. Thanks Gary!
