10000 Maniacs- Marquee at the Tralf, Buffalo NY 3/8/96 Live Soundboard xfer from 1st gen tape

Here’s a real treat today. Someone had asked me to transfer a tape that had part of this show. I figured that it would be nice to transfer this entire show as well. This is another one of Joel Gershon’s seemingly lost archives. Recorded through soundboard with band permission.
I love this era of the Maniacs- it is the full “classic” lineup of Buck/Augustiniak/Drew/Gustavson, PLUS John Lombardo from the early days (my favorite era), and Mary Ramsey on vocals. You get old 10,000 maniacs songs along with some John & Mary sings I think. Great stuff.
The mix was pretty weak so I fixed it up in Izotope RX7

10,000 Maniacs- Greek Theatre, Los Angeles Ca. 6/2/93 xfer from DAT Master Nakamichi CM300 Mic Live

I never considered posting this one because I thought that there was an FM broadcast of the same show. I just realized that they played 2 nights at the Greek- I taped night 1, the mobile truck got night 2. So here it is- decent quality, typical “good mic in an amphitheatre” sound.

10,000 Maniacs- Liberty Lunch, Austin Tx 9/2/89 xfer f/Master Audio Cassette

This one is from Craig Hilmer’s collection and it is a bit puzzling to me. 10,000 Maniacs were playing big venues on this tour- we saw the stop at the 8,500 seat Greek Theater in Berkeley, and they played the 3,000 seat at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas right before this. Then they play the (about) 450 capacity Liberty Lunch. Wild. I had to look through newspaper articles to confirm that the year is correct. Probably the last club show until Natalie left the band.

EDIT: thanks to promoters Mark Pratz for the background! “it was sold out so at least 1,000 attended. They ended up there when some disagreement occurred between the band and promoter/s at a Barton Springs outdoor concert back then, before ACL fest was created. We had done the band at the Continental. Club in the early 80’s (to no one,Thanksgiving, oops!). So the agent called and asked if we could pick up the show which. Duh, of course we did. I remember it being an early show so we could still do the evening bands booked.”

Audio Live Concert

10,000 Maniacs- Greek Theatre, Berkeley Ca 8/12/89 xfer from master audiotape Sony WMD6C ECM909

Anonymous and I both got tired of our crappy audio recordings and bought Sony pro walkman decks in 1989. At the time, they were the best quality around. I have been enjoying quite a few of Anonymous’ recordings that he made in the 1989-1990 time frame, so expect more that sound like these in upcoming posts. I really like the D6/909 combo. Nice and clear recordings.
This was my first time seeing 10,000 Maniacs, and it was probably the best show out of them all.

Natalie Merchant- KCRW Snap Live in Studio and Interview, Santa Monica Ca 12/28/88 high gen tape

Alright, 2 early ones for you today. This first one is probably the highest generation tape I have ever posted. From what I can see online, there are no good copies of this one. It was so sped up from high speed dubbing that I time stretched it by 12 PERCENT and it still sounds a little fast to me. Izotope did a nice job of de-hissing it. It’s as good as it’s gonna get.

Long interview w/Natalie and Deirdre O’Donoghue, plus Natalie on piano. Really cool performance. Sounds like the first time “eat for two” was performed.
