Man is the Bastard- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/7/94 xfer from KALX’ Master Pre-FM Reel to Reel

Last one for today, from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive of tapes. This reminds me that I need to add a bunch of notes that another KALX DJ commented and it sounds like they might have tapes as well.

Speaking of tapes, I get to hang out with my old friend Craig Hilmer today. He taped a bunch of stuff in Austin and San Antonio back in the 80s and early 90s. Let’s hope he brought a box of masters.

I’ve mentioned before that these KALX soundboard simulcasts were a crapshoot. Bad words could slip out, board mixes could be uneven.. and this one checks all of those boxes. I did my best to rebalance and bring guitar up in the mix, but that guitar must have been BLASTING from the stage, haha. Hope they didn’t get in trouble for language.

Dirt- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/7/94 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette Anarcho Punk Crass Recs

I have a LOT of Eggplan’t stuff to post, so let’s do a 2nd post this week from his collection. I have to admit that I have never heard of Dirt, but they seem to be pretty well-known in anarcho punk circles, releasing an LP on Crass Records in 1982. Here’s what discogs has to say about them “DIRT was an anarcho-punk band from London, UK, formed in 1980. The band was active until 1995, after a hiatus from 1986 to 1992.” So, this was most likely their last US tour before calling it a day.
With band member names like Sh*t and Vomit, what’s not to love?

AFI- Kalx Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 10/7/94 xfer from pre-fm master cassette A Fire Inside A.F.I.

None of my 4 reel to reel decks seem to be working properly, so I get to take them ALL in to the shop. Do you have any idea how much that is going to cost? I don’t even want to think about it. That means that the KALX reels will be transferred soon- instead I am starting with the cassettes from Rick Sylvain’s collection. Expect a couple every week for the foreseeable future. There are some really awesome tapes in there.
Here is an early AFI set. Fans are gonna love this one.

Sebadoh- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 10/7/94 xfer from DAT clone of master

Here’s another great recording from Kevin Haynes’ unsurfaced collection of recordings. He was a good friend back then- he and Todd Nakamine were my closest friends during my 3 years in Whittier. I hope he is doing well.
I was planning on posting a multicamera video but we found an issue with it so we had to scrap and re-do. I just happened to find this on my hard drive- I digitized it 2 years ago. Lou has some great one-liners in here. Full band in studio.

7 Seconds- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 10/7/94 xfer from master tape

Here’s another Cattle Club gen from Marty Sertich.

Here is Kevin Seconds’ memory of the show:

“I knew there was video footage of a 7Secs Sacramento gig when we were going it as a 3-piece (mid-90s, in between guitarist Bobby being out and then coming back into the band) but had never seen it.”

Heavenly- Alligator Lounge Santa Monica 10/6/94 xfer f/DAT Clone indie pop K Sarah Records Complete

I am going to try to post not two, but THREE audio recordings for you today. I should probably take off this cast and get serious with typing here.

The first one is an On This Date in History thing. I did it again- I had one all uploaded and half-written and discovered that it is already online. Not a fan of wasted time.

My friend Kevin Haynes taped this one- he did a lot of indie stuff with his DAT back in the 90s and we would trade/hang out while I lived there. Decent audience recording that I EQ’d to help bring out some bass.

And what is up with this newspaper preview? Is this a recommendation to see the show or not?

The Go-Go’s: Rodney on the Roq, Los Angeles Ca. 10/2/94 Audio xfer from DAT Master

Back when I lived in L.A., I would sometimes check who was on some of the weekly KROQ shows. If it was someone interesting, I would fire up the DAT machine and record it. Looking back, I regret not recording every Rodney show + any loveline show with a musical guest. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 and all…
For this show, The Go-Go’s had reunited in 2004 and were premiering their new single “the world has lost its head” for the upcoming(at the time) 2 disc retrospective “return to the valley of the go-go’s”. This is the entire show- interviews, call-ins, songs played and commercials! It is a time capsule of mid-90s KROQ.

Polkacide- Slim’s, San Francisco Ca 10/31/94 xfer from master soundboard cassette

This one is to make up for that 2 minute long “Voter’s Choice” Sweet baby jesus post this morning. this was one of the 2 that came in tied for 2nd place in last week’s voting. If you want to get in on the voting action, hit up the patreon link below!
This one is really nice quality. It must have been difficult to get all of those instruments in a balanced mix. Thanks Radley!

Dick Dale- La Luna, Portland OR 10/1/94 xfer from master Videotape Live Surf Guitar Legend

I love it when youtube commenters come through. Someone confirmed that this show (with Galaxy Trio opening) was from the 1994 Dick Dale show at La Luna. Now we have an exact date. Thank you.
Here is another Craig Babb master recording- this one is shot from the crowd so you see some heads in the way and it loses focus on occasion, but it is still awesome. Features Dick’s post-show hang & endorsement of Galaxy Trio.
