Today’s post comes from Barry Ward’s tape collection. I am assuming this is 1st gen (they were down RKL’s way in Santa Barbara), but not 100% sure. I tried to check it against the demos that are out there of the band and none sounded the same. I also tried Shazam’ing the songs and no match. Let me know if this is already out there under a different name.

Another KALX tape for Monday. A few months ago, I mentioned that these KALX broadcasts can be risky- especially the ones from Gilman since people tend to forget the are on the radio and let a few f-bombs drop. That’s what happened here, in the first minute of the set! Haha, I hope the FCC didn’t come down on KALX too hard back then. Also, I have no idea if this photo is from this show. I just saw a pic of Tilt from Gilman and ran with it.

Here is an obscure gem, courtesy of Robert McKeown. This is the only known recording of Madonnahue, which was a short-lived incarnation of a Sacramento band called Barbara’s Bush. Now, a name like Barbara’s Bush doesn’t sound so offensive in 2023, but in the early 90’s, our first lady was Barbara Bush… so there’s that. Madonnahue consisted of Leon Davis (RIP), Ed Hunter and Mike Kellogg. Huge thanks to Robert for sending the tape over. I love getting these lesser-known bands up on the archive.

Since a lot of people will be watching the pregame at the time that I usually post, here’s an early one today. This may be the very last one from Craig Babb’s collection. It took a couple years for me to digitize and post. Thanks Craig for your patience- it was a fun project! This one is short so you can substitute it for whatever the SB halftime show is this year.

We are getting to the end of Craig Babb-filmed shows. I think I have 2 or 3 more. Thanks again, Craig! This one sounds pretty good- I am surprised that a garage punk band like The Mono Men did not play at a pure distortion volume. Good. If anyone has any info on the venue/city, please let me know.

There is not a lot of info about this band online. They are described as “Bizarre and comedic punk rock band based in the Pacific Northwest of the USA.” on discogs. They had one CDR release- We Dined for Your Sins in 1995. I think I see Dean Miles on drums. That’s all I’ve got. Input welcome.

Here is another one from Craig Babb’s seemingly endless supply of master videos. There are still more to post, including a Cheezy Trolls one that people were asking about! Anyway, this is from Max’s. I asked Craig about a date and he did not recall, so “mid-90s” it is.

Happy Friday everyone! I have had this one in the youtube upload queue for 2 months, and finally reached out to Craig Babb to get a little more detail. This is a different Sow Belly show than one that was posted a while back. Sow Belly were Chris Baxley, Joe Baxley, Mike Brilowski, and Seantos McDonald. They released a couple of cassettes on their own in the early 90s, and a self-released 7″ in 1991.

A couple weeks back, Tim Foster messaged me and let me know that he found an OLD Knockoffs video tape in a box, and he wasn’t sure what was on it. I bring it back home and try to play it, and it immediately goops up my heads. After multiple attempts to play and clean heads, I get it to play… but it only plays static on the audio. I pop in a store bought VHS tape, and it plays audio on the VCR fine. This is happening for this tape and the desecration tape I posted yesterday. I try a different VCR, and I get audio. Never had THAT happen before. Like I have said before, this hobby is 20% transferring stuff, 5% actually enjoying the content, and 75% fighting with gear to get this stuff to work! Haha, it was totally worth it. Look at Tom’s beautiful head of hair. So many songs that are either unreleased or pre- 12 Suckerpunches that were never played after this era. So cool. And it doesn’t sound awful for stock camera audio. Thanks Tom (& Tim) for asking me to digitize this one. So awesome!

Here’s another time capsule from Craig Babb’s collection. I don’t have date info on this one, so if you have any ideas please let me know. Sow Belly is first, then Galaxy Trio comes in at about the 20:00 mark.
