Shack- Independent release CD Sacramento Local Spotlight Alternative Nu Metal 1994

Were you all wondering where I went? The answer is taxes. I am deep down the tax receipt rabbit hole right now and it sucks… and this is for my personal stuff. I have not even started the nonprofit tax stuff except for the “I didn’t make much money” postcard filing. Lol.

It’s time for the local spotlight! I don’t know much about this band. Sam Coe went on to play in Low Flying Owls and I assume that Pete Coe is a relative. Not much out there on the other 2 members.

Joyride- Demo 1994 xfer f/Master Demo cassette Adolescents Orange County Punk Steve Soto

Here’s a really cool one from Anonymous 2’s collection. Joyride formed in the late 80’s by members of Adolescents and disbanded in 1996. This demo had no date but it seems to predate their 2nd release “Another Month Of Mondays”, which was released in April 1995.
Joyride were a straight ahead alternative rock band- not a whole lot of punk happening here. They were really good- my favorite track is “Running Away from You”, which is the one that didn’t make the album.

R.K.L.- Take Me Home raw 8mm to SVHS footage Reel 2 xfer f/ band SVHS tape Rich Kids on LSD

today’s video collections post comes from Barry Ward. This one is kinda for hardcore fans only. This is a reel of silent raw 8mm footage — portions of which were used for the Take Me Home promo video from the Riches to Rags album. I love watching stuff like this- this would be great to use for that documentary that is being worked. Is that still happening?

Rich Kids on LSD- Complete Live Show DAT from Barry Ward’s Archive 1994? RKL R.K.L.

It’s audience participation time- this one comes from Barry Ward’s collection, and what you see is all I know about it. It doesn’t sound like the live in Berlin or Live in a Dive releases, and the between song banter gives no clues except the introduction of a new song that (I think) Riches to Rags. Anyone know where this is from?

It sounds great. I am not sure if it is a DAT source, as it cuts at about the 31 minute mark. It might be a master tape or reel to DAT.

Jason sounds a little ragged, but otherwise perfect.

Ben Folds Five- Self Titled, Self Released Cassette EP 1994 xfer from master tape

A little while back, Kaiden Skinner reached out to me to digitize some of his rare tapes. This was one of them. After seeing the price of these on discogs, I want to thank him for trusting me with these. Wow!
Here’s what Discogs has to say about this tape (lenghty)

Self-released cassette sold at early Ben Folds Five shows before their Caroline Records debut. No catalog number or barcode. Hand-folded printed card stock with logo used on many official releases.

“Jackson Cannery” is the version later released on the compilation Ben Folds Five – Naked Baby Photos.

“Jackson Cannery” and “Eddie Walker, This Is Your Life” were released alongside this tape in 1994 on the 7” single Ben Folds Five – Jackson Cannery.

“Boxing’s Been Good To Me” was previously released as an alternate mix on Ben Folds’ Nashville demo tape in 1991, Ben Folds – Ben Folds.

“The Last Polka,” “Where’s Summer B?,” and “I Don’t Miss Julianne,” are earlier recordings, not the ones on the Caroline debut CD. These versions were apparently unreleased other than this cassette.

Pocket Change- Demo 1994 xfer from master audio cassette Sacramento Punk band The Generals

I went to Dave Downey (and Robert McKeown’s) yard sale yesterday, looking to score some $1 CD’s and I find that Dal Basi is already there. He already hoover’d up most of the good ones. I got a few, but it was nice catching up with the man- it had been a while. Gotta wake up early to beat Dal to the deals I suppose. Why am I rambling like this? This tape is from Dal’s tape collection. It just happened to be his turn for the daily post.
Pocket change consisted of Kirk Janowiak on Drums, Matt Sertich on Bass and Vocals, and Marty Sertich on Guitar and Vocals.

Demo tracks: Facing a New Day/Sunshine Girl/I Want to Live/Luggage/Take it Easy/Remember

Bisybackson- Helps Build Strong Wonder Demo, Sacramento Ca 1994 xfer from master audio cassette

This one is from Anonymous 2′ collection and it’s another one of those “Wow! where the hell was I when this band was around? The answer was Whitter. I was in Whittier. Kinda bummed to miss them- they remind me of early Replacements. Killer songs.

The discogs description for this band is extremely detailed. Here is a short snippet. Go to discogs if you want the entire 3,000 word dissertation: “Originally from Sacramento, Ca or ‘Sacto’ Bisybackson was founded in 1994 by Dan DeVriend, Curtis Frietag, and Jason Racine (Razen) while partially living in infamous punk show house “the P st house” that also housed many other sac punk bands such as the Secretions, Squirrel, and members of Amber Inn among many others. The golden Age of 90’s Sacto Punk was born right in this neighborhood with legendary DIY Non-Profit Show space ‘The Loft’ a block away and Time tested books around the corner as well. Many local hardcore labels such as Sunny Sindicut (Amber Inn / Yah Mos) and Moo-La-la (Los Huevos, Yah-mos, Karate Party) were spawned during this period and played a key role in the growth spurt of killer DIY sac punk during this period. Bisybackson was tried and true DIY fully supporting the scene and putting in long non-profit co-op hours at the Loft selling books and records during the Day and playing and hosting shows at the Loft and local basements by night.”

I am willing to bet that Anonymous 2 would be open to offers to buy this tape. Contact me if you are interested and I can help out.

The Real McCoys- Demo 1994 xfer f/ Master Demo tape Hard Rock Glam hair Metal Andy Johns Lost Media

Here’s one from Anonymous 3’s collection that seems to be a mystery band. There is nothing at all on discogs that could be this band, Shazam doesn’t know what it is, so I assume this is more lost media. Cool.
It’s well done hard rock/glam/hair metal. Produced by Andy Johns, brother of Glyn Johns.
And that’s all I know about that. Hopefully someone can chime in and help us out with some background.

Thanks to tim brogdon for more info on the recording: “I was one of the guitar players in that band. Yes – super incredible to record with Andy at Oceanway. Vicki James Wright is singing. JJ Bolt other guitar. Sid Riggs on drums. Danny (?) on bass. Those were the days!! Right on! Thanks for sharing…and Thanks anon for pointing it out to me! I can’t remember if that is Diz or Vicki’s brother playing keys. I do recall that Andy wanted to be paid in beer.”

Rich Kids on LSD- 4 song demo xfer f/ Band Master Cassette 1994 RKL R.K.L. Oxnard Hardcore Nardcore

I am late on today’s “On This Day in History” post, so you get the collections post first. On the bright side, I had a meeting run long so I had to change my OTD plans and it is way better. So there’s that.
Anyway, in anticipation of the RKL shows this week, I figured it would be a good time to post this from Barry’s tape collection. This seems to be an early demo for Riches to Rags. One of the tracks (in My Mind) was renamed. I love hearing new (to me) versions of songs with Jason on vocals. So great.

Ultrahead- Demo 1994 xfer from master cassette Doug Carrion Dag Nasty Descendents Industrial Metal

Back to the collections. Here is one from Anonymous 3’s box of tapes. His tapes are kind of a nice break from the punk collections- he has a lot of unique metal stuff. And boy is this one unique!

Apparently, Doug Carrion (Descendents, Dag Nasrty, Field Day, many others) was in an industrial metal band in the 90s. It looks like he was the main contact as well, from the looks of the info on the tape.

The tape is not dated, but these 2 tracks ended up on a released called “Definition:Aggro” released on Shiro Records in 1994. It was definitely a surprise to see Doug’s name on the tape when I pulled this one!
